So I've shut the device down again by pressing the power button for several seconds. If that doesn't work, but it just boots right up instead, then try to confirm that the AUX button is functional, as I'm starting to suspect a bum button. If that's the case I've no idea what solution is feasible. j Any idea how to test the AUX button? During one of my tests keeping the AUX button pressed longer than usual the screen was displayed rotated 90 degrees. So at least it had some effect. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find much documentation of the applications installed so I can't tell if any of them should react to the AUX button being pressed. Robin Paulson wrote: 2009/3/3 Helge Hafting helge.haft...@hist.no: too. It looks like openstreetmap can have up to 50 files in a directory. So far this program has checked 5100 files in 12 minutes, and downloaded 260. It looks like it will get through all my 50.000 tiles in under 2 hours. I use wifi, the usb connection may be slower. If anyone want to try, here is the download link. http://www.aitel.hist.no/~helgehaf/openmoko/yaouh_new.py awesome, that's lots faster by the way, i don't know if it's important or not, but iirc osm folder structure has up to 128000 files per folder, for zoom 17 The tiles have 5-digit names, so the max would be 10 ? Anyway, that could be a problem. With hundred thousand tiles and about 60 byte per URL, pythm would send a 7.5MB parameter list to a invocation of curl. That can easily be trimmed down to 950kB by only sending file names. Still, it'd be interesting to know if the freerunner can handle that at all. A pc usually can. A loop can be used to limit this to something sane, like 1000 files or so. But do anyone actually have that many files? I just checked my 50.000 tiles, and found no more than 250 tiles in any directory. Perhaps a large square area at zoom 17? Further speedups are possible. File check data for 50.000 tiles is 12MB, the limit for such a dataset is how fast 12MB can be downloaded, and how fast all those files can be checksummed. And then there is the transfer of changed tiles. My code is inefficient when there are many small directories, because it starts a new transfer for each directory. To get the best possible speed, pycurl should be used. Everything can then be done from inside python, avoiding process creation overhead. Persistent connections can be utilized for the entire transfer, eliminating the small-directory problem entirely. I am not sure if there is a pycurl package yet though. Installing python-modules dodn't bring it in. Helge Hafting ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Freerunner freely runs Gentoo
Hello everybody, We the gen...@openmoko team are pleased to announce that we reached our first milestone for running Gentoo on the Freerunner. This mean you can cross- and natively compile a basic system including X, enlightenment, the FSO framework, WLAN tools and many more packages. Also some phone GUIs went already into the overlay located at http://overlays.gentoo.org/embedded To get started, please take a look at http://gentoo.mindzoo.de or visit us on the Freenode IRC channel #gentoo-openmoko. The goal of our project is to provide a way to cross- and natively compile all packages of the protage tree and feed back our fixes to the official tree. Furthermore, we are going to provide Freerunner specific ebuilds like for the FSO framework and different phone GUIs. What you can expect: - the Gentoo feeling ;-) - forget about version conflicts - frequent enlightenment updates - easy integration of new packages (start writing ebuilds yourself, it's trivial!) - multiple phone stacks - CHOICE So to all Gentoo lovers: Stop-by and get the experience the Gentoo feeling on your phone! Disclaimer: Even though we did a great step in the right direction, there are still enough pitfalls, packages that don't compile and difficulties in setting up the cross-compile environement. So at this point in time Gentoo is _NOT_ ready for the average user. If you try nevertheless, be prepared for a bumpy journey! You have been warned! Best regards and happy compiling! ;-) Sven, in the name of the gen...@openmoko team ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

But if the GTA03 would have a hardware keyboard and some joystick or trackball or something like this to use as a mouse, then the capacitive screen would not be a problem. Again that depends on usage scenario. For example can you sign your name with a trackball? Or use one with gloved hands? [FSO] DBus Remote - missing package socat - for writing remote sms-tool
Hi all, I'm playing a little with DBus and JAVA. THe first communication just works fine. I heart, that it is possible to let the local DBus, in my case a PC, communicate with a remote DBus, in my case the Freerunner (what else?). In [1] is described how to achieve the remote connection. The author writes, that the remote system has to have installed socat, but I can't find it in the repository (FSO MS5). Is it possible that someone can compile it for me? That would be great. Perhaps I should say, for which application I want to use this. Maybe that there is a better way. I want to write a sms-application for the desktop, which sends the messages via the freerunner. Another way, which came in my mind was writing a server (java.rmi) which makes the dbus-connection and a client, which just connects to rmi. But in my mind the first solution looks better because you don't need an extra server. Any comments and hints are welcome. Re: GTA03 Touchscreen Capacitive (was Re: OT: iPhone howto)
Well, there is no (massmarket) implementation of multi-touch using resistive touch technology. There has been one link in this thread to one that is being developed, but that technology was not yet finished if I remember correctly, and it was not licensed to any manufacturer of touch panels. A link to the resistive, work-in-progress, multi-touch: http://hackaday.com/2009/02/19/stantums-high-precision-multitouch/ But except for the multi-touch; the more durable argument is really important to me, at least.. I want to carry my phone with me everywhere, and I want it to be easily accessible everywhere which means I don't want to put it into a protective thingy, and I don't want to reach for my precision enhancing pointing device to use it. I will give SHR Testing a try First off sorry about reposting, but after looking at the SHR wiki page there is one concern and a question On the wiki page this is listed under the Known Issues Address Book SHR is not implementing a PIM (Personal Information Manager) yet. Work is in progress, but to included in SHR testing this has some consequences on daily use: * Only contacts on the SIM card are available. * It is not possible to import a Vcard file. o It seems to be possible with this gopher://gopher.fnordpol.de/9/data/DbusAccessScripts_0.0.0.tar.gz script written by Zem http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/User:Zem#DBus_Access_Scripts. None of my contacts are on my SIM card and it would take forever to move all of them onto it, the link the the script quoted is a dead link does anyone have a correct link they can point me to or a suggested app that can read Vcards so I can import my contacts from FDOM, copied onto my MicroSD card, into SHR? this is unlikely to work for the time being I suspect. [debian] kernel upgrade and touchscreen input problems
All, I did an apt-get dist-upgrade today, and got the 2.6.28 kernel installed in the process. The FR still boots with the 2.6.24 kernel it had before. So I wrote the 2.6.28 kernel to /dev/mtdblock3. Unfortunately, I get RCU detected CPU 0 stall (t=4294908494/600 jiffies) and a traceback, and then it fails to setup usb0 so I can't log in that way. But it does boot. I also had to apt-get install fso-config-gta02; otherwise I don't have a /etc/frameworkd.conf. Under either the 2.6.24 kernel or the 2.6.28 kernel, I still have problems: The AUX brings up the keyboard, so that's good.
