Since Houyu Li doesn't seem to be available, and nobody else has write

Anyone interested in having his key added for write access just drop me a

 * working SMS/calls
 * GPRS
 * suspend/resume

Attached are patches that i used and work-in progress
howto. I will upload whole rootfs during this week.

As for the patches - 0001 is taken from here [2] and
adjusted to apply to current git.

0002 fixes problem when alsa scenarios are being
loaded from /etc/alsa which make troubles for debian
rootfs where this dir is used for something else. It
uses just /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/ which is now
 standard location for all distros.

0003 handles renaming of PMU input events

0005 gets rid of apm in favour of sysfs for suspending

All those patches should not break 2.6.24 compatibility
so maybe it makes sense to apply them to QTE improved?

2009-03-30 Thread David Reyes Samblas Martinez
unable to untar the file
r...@om-gta02:~# tar -xzvf serenity-0.2.tar.gz

2009/3/29 Joel Newkirk freerun...@newkirk.us:
I know it's been a few weeks since I said I was going to try to get
 this out, I apologize.

I've released what is essentially an alpha test for the Serenity
theme, therefore named serenity-0.2.  It's incomplete, and may be broken
in some ways I've not seen yet.  Comments/criticisms/advice on
structural and functional aspects are welcome, those on visual style
should be limited to points of inconsistency with the rest of the theme
or problems like scaling. (specifically, if you don't like the look of
the theme that's fine, but don't bother with comments like I don't like
dark themes or what-not - the point is to present the theme to those
interested, and hopefully discuss improvements/fixes, not take a poll
 of the appeal)

Note that this is just an Illume/Enlightenment theme, NOT Elementary or
any specific apps.  (like Paroli, Zhone, SHR phonegui-efl)  I'm working
 on those as well, however.

I use it currently with SHR-unstable and FSO-MS5.1.  You can download
it from http://newkirk.us/om/serenity-0.2.tar.gz and extract - it opens
to a folder named serenity, which
 contains usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes/serenity.edj
and usr/share/enlightenment/data/config/serenity folder holding a few
files. Copy themes/serenity.edj and the config/serenity folder
to /usr/share/enlightement, then you can select it in Illume Settings
under Look-Theme, select 'System' at the top-left to see themes
installed globally. (/usr/share/...)  NOTE: Wallpaper and Theme, at
least, may segfault if you are using Software_16 rendering.

Once I'm satisfied that it doesn't break anything, and all the
main elements are rethemed, I'll release it as an ipk.  (of course, at
any time if someone wants to they can extract the serenity.edj file and
have their way with it - anyone who wants to enhance or alter it
in any way is free to do so, so long as 'simple' alterations like
changing some images files retain a credit that the new theme is based
on Serenity by Joel Newkirk - 'major alterations' or extraction of some
portion of Serenity to use in another theme is fine without attribution)

 What I'm doing:

Start with Illume and default themes (anything not defined in illume.edj
will 'fall through' to default.edj, like battery and clock) basically
renaming illume as serenity, and merge more groups up from default
(battery, clock, desktop icon, etc) then work to simplify the
structure (graphically and visually - most significantly, making icons
two images instead of about eight images each) and shift toward the
 desired visual appearance.

Ordinary buttons are translucent white, though on the black default
background they appear grey. Selected/pressed buttons are an
'openmoko-orange' tinted rendition of the same translucent button
image. Icons are just icon image at rest, are translucent white when
highlighted by keyboard or mouseover (IE dragging on FR) and
 translucent orange when clicked/tapped.

Battery applet is the green one from Illume, but narrower.  Tapping it
displays the battery percentage and time overlay.  GSM applet is the
same as Illume but colorized red/yellow/green based on signal quality,
with carrier name above signal. Clock applet is more heavily
altered, displaying digital time with date below it.  Keyboard has been
visually/structurally simplified - removing two transparent overlays
from each key - resulting in (for me at least) significantly faster
keyboard response.  (and About:Theme is reworked, though you can only
see it if you enable the 'Start' Top Shelf Gadget, then select
Enlightenment-Theme from the menu - the animation there is one I've
used for splash and busy screens as well, but the FR doesn't seem to
have sufficient horsepower to do that without noticeably slowing load
times, so I axed them - eventually I may end up with a 'pretty' and a
 'functional' version of the theme)

Still to do: Several components (like keyboard suggestion popup,
tasklist) are still black-text-on-grey-gradient, will be changing to
light-on-black.  Some visual elements (like left-right arrows on top
bar) are still IMHO pretty ugly with software_16, which I hope to fix.

I'm hoping within a couple weeks or so to have finished at least the
structural/composition changes, resulting in a leaner and faster theme
that can easily have any/all images altered to result in a completely
 different yet still leaner/faster theme.

I've also worked on theming Elementary, Zhone, and SHR's telephony
GUIs, (just looked at Paroli so far) but haven't yet seen any way to do
so without overwriting the original files - which of course is a no-no,
being subject to reversion whenever the package owning them is
updated.  (Can anyone tell me a 'right' way to override them?  Does it
require rewritten apps that explicitly support theme selection or

software_16 caused a segfault, so I turned this off. I can always go

Unfortunately, I couldn't get a change.
I now have /usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes/serenity.edj,

I can select serenity in Look-Theme. I then press OK, and
the display goes black for a long time while enlightenment uses 100%
cpu. After a while, the standard theme comes back - nothing new to see.
Nothing like those screenshots.

Is there anything more that should be done? Some package I ought to

Booting from MicroSD

Hello,

I created a vfat partition size 8M, and an ext2 partition with all of the
rest size.
I took 2008.12 and untar the rootfs to the ext2 partition. I placed the
uImage.bin into the vfat partition.

The Kernel (I tried both the original 2008.12 kernel and the testing kernel)
is loaded until It arrive to the following messages:

Configure network interfaces ... /usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1327: No
soundcard found ...
usb0: no IPv6 routers present.

And that's it, it does not continue loading. If I keep it up, it turn the
screen off, and only by pressing shortly on the power button it turn on
again, with messages on the screen about this two actions.
If I attach/detache the usb cable, I also see messages by the kernel, but
nothing more.

What am I missing or doing wrong ?

Thanks,

you have to add desktop files to /usr/share/applications... and illume will
automatically pick them up. Depending on the menu config (the one you had
 to
reinstall - e-wm-menu... in /etc/xdg/menus) the desktop file must contain a

Normally illume reloads the desktop when files in /usr/share/applications

Wow, I love this idea ! Alas, it looks a little slow. (Haven't tried to

Here's an idea how you could perhaps make it much faster:

A long time ago, I discussed with Carsten about what the Glamo could
do for us. Predictably, this quickly turned into some rather extensive
bashing of this ill-fated chip. On item that came up is the lack of
proper support for a feature X11 calls compositing:

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compositing_window_manager

The Glamo hardware has the ability to blend images, but, if I recall
our discussion correctly, X11 expects the blending operation to support
certain formats which the Glamo doesn't. So the conclusion was that it
wouldn't be possible to accelerate full X11 compositing with the Glamo.

Hm. But the glamo supports _some_ format. Will X11 be able to take
advantage of that, if the app is smart and request exactly the subsets
of blending operations/dataformats that the glamo can do?

[...]
Oh, and where are the applications ? :-) When Openmoko first announced
the Linux-based GTA01, I read a lot of jokes about the kind of user
interface a Linux phone would have. Usually they were of the kind
making a phone call is easy and intuitive:

 # phone dial -d /dev/ttySAC0 --number=+123456789 --voice

But I wonder if something that would make a call with simply

 # call foobar

wouldn't be about as convenient to use as a GUI. Hang up with ^C,
background and do something else with ^Z, etc. :-)

I have such a script for sms, but not for calls. I can send a message
like this:

  # sms 123456789 Short message text

The script works with SHR, and probably FSO:
#!/bin/sh
mdbus -s org.freesmartphone.ogsmd /org/freesmartphone/GSM/Device
org.freesmartphone.GSM.SMS.SendMessage u\$1\ $2 {}

That is supposed to be 2 lines, but thunderbird tends to wrap.

[QtExtended] Do we need to set QTOPIA_PHONE_VENDOR

2009-03-30 Thread Franky Van Liedekerke
In the file devices/neo/custom.h, there's a parameter called
QTOPIA_PHONE_VENDOR, but this is not set for the neo. It *is* set for the
greenphone, so I'm wondering: do we need this variable or not?
According to http://doc.trolltech.com/qtopia4.3/syscust-gsm.html, this is
not really needed, but I changed something in the file
devices/neo/src/plugins/phonevendors/neo/vendor_neo.cpp (to get the
voicemail number from a conf file, like for the greenphone), and it doesn't
seem as if qtopia uses the changes (the generated libneovendor.so file)
since for voicemail, it still tries the AT commands ...

High CPU usage of Frameworkd

2009-03-30 Thread Michael Tansella
Hi,

I have written a tool in C++/Qt and if it connects to DBUS and enables the
GYPSY, frameworkd is using permanently 50% of CPU which seems very high to me.
Is this normal? Due to python? Or am I doing something wrong. I'm using SHR
testing but with FSO it's the same.

Code Snippets:

/// create proxy objects for method calls
QString ServiceBusName = org.freedesktop.Gypsy;
QString ObjectPath = /org/freedesktop/Gypsy ;
QString MethodPath = ;
GPSInterface = new QDBusInterface(  ServiceBusName,

GPSRescourceInterface = new QDBusInterface( ServiceBusName,

ObjectPath,

GPSOusagedInterface = new QDBusInterface( ServiceBusName,

For me, GPS always causes very high load, too. I think it is due to

hopefully we will see the vala reimplementation some day :-)

[QtExtended] Bad kernel used as base image and other issues

2009-03-30 Thread Franky Van Liedekerke
Hi,

it seems the base image used for the qt-extended-improved
(testing-om-gta02-20090120.uImage.bin) has at least one flaw: it
doesn't unsuspend when a message (sms) arrives.
I've tried with the basic released version of Om2008.12, and this one
works as expected for that: when a sms arrives, the device unsuspends
and shows an alert. So the testing kernel should be replaced by another
one that works ok.

Now, it seems that there are still some issues at hand:

- when somebody calls for the first time, the call is registered twice,
so it results in one missed call. But on subsequent calls from the
same number, this doesn't happen anymore.

- when a second sms arrives, it results in 3 sms's in the inbox,
instead of 2. It seems the previous sms is counted twice.
I believe the reason for this to be the following: qtextended sees an
alert for a new sms, checks the simcard and copies all the sms's from
there, but it fails to remove them from the sim afterwards.
Therefore, the scenario is the following:

| sms count on sim | sms count in qt

  sms 1: 1 1
  sms 2: 2 1+2
  sms 3: 3 1+2+3
  etc ...

This is consistent when I switch the sim-card to another phone: I
then see 3 sms's on the sim. And in qt-extended (without sim) I see 6
  sms's in the inbox.
I don't know if this issue is fixed in later kernels or so? I am
using the latest gsm firmware (moko11), so maybe the kernel is the
problem here ... might a2.6.28 or newer kernel help?

- the voicemail number is not retained across reboots

- voicenotes app not recording

Maybe I should really wait for a combined 2.6.28 patch for qtextended
and try that one then? Radek (see bottom
http://lists.openmoko.org/nabble.html#nabble-td2474272) doesn't seem to
have the sms-duplicating issue at least ...

[openBmap] Version 0.2.0 released of the GSM cell, GPS logger

2009-03-30 Thread Onen
Hello,

the new version of the logger is out. This is a major step: you can now
do the complete process (log, upload, delete processed logs)
graphically! No need to edit any file.

WHAT'S NEW SINCE 0.1?
* Now displays GSM data at startup. No need to wait for network
   update.
* Before upload, login/password graphical interface added.
* After upload, asks about deleting all processed log files.
* Requests CPU ressource to prevent phone from going to suspend (this
depends on the configuration of the phone...).
* Do not log if a call is ongoing. The reasons are:
  - when in a call org.freesmartphone.GSM.Network.GetStatus()
returns a lower signal strength.
  - org.freesmartphone.GSM.Monitor.GetNeighbourCellInformation()
returns garbage when in a call.
* Software id and version added in generated logs

Another major point is the beta support of neighbour cells logging.
Following comments made on this list (thanks Yorick, Olivier and Helge
and sorry if I forget others), I have changed my mind and the code is
ready in this release. But deactivated. The reasons are:
  - we need to clarify the meaning of some fields
  - we need to clarify if there is no risk of mixing cells and
MCC/MNC at the borders.
The idea will be to keep track if a logged cell was serving, or
neighbour. This will let us experiment with ways of building coverage
areas, and specify algorithms.

Thanks Stefan, the application is already in the feeds:
http://downloads.openmoko.org/repository/unstable/armv4t/openbmap-logger_0.2.0-r1_armv4t.ipk
= opkg install/upgrade openbmap-logger

Ipk, tar, git can be found at:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=218065package_id=310952
http://myposition.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=myposition

Following is a part of the README. You will find a summary of the
project, and the manual with some details about the configuration file
if you want total control of your application.

Onen

SUMMARY:
OpenBmap is a free and open map of wireless communicating objects
(e.g. cellular antenna, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). It provides tools to
mutualize data, create and access this map.
The purpose of this software is to log GSM data, together with
GPS coordinate. This data are sent to the website (www.openbmap.org),
in order to build a free database. In order to keep a high quality
of data, we store GPS quality, speed, GSM signal strength, etc...
Possible use of this database:
* get your location based on the current GSM cell you are connected to.
(GPS needs extra power to function, GSM is always on. Less precise
than GPS, but enough for a lot of usages. Instant location, GPS
needs time to get a fix.)
* speed up GPS first time to fix by providing the location based
on GSM data
* geolocate your photos when taken
* get a map of GSM coverage
* get a map of 2, 2.5, 3G coverage (not yet implemented)
* ...

What you should expect:
* The complete process is done through graphical interface.
* Requests CPU ressource to prevent phone from going to suspend (this
depends on the configuration of the phone...).
* generation of logs (no log during a call)
* Graphical window to enter login/password before upload (possibility
to cancel upload).
* upload of logs
* Graphical window proposing to delete all logs already processed.

MANUAL:
Interface is straightforward.

Note: The GPS is started as soon as the application is launched.
And it keeps running if the application is logging or not. This
is to prevent losing the GPS position if you pause your logging.
You have to exit the application in order to stop the GPS.

* A button to start generating logs. Values will be displayed when
valid. Logs are stored under HOME/.openBmap/Logs by default.

* A button to stop generating logs.

* A button to upload.
This pops a window up, which displays the current login/password.
Please modify it before pressing 'ok' button if needed. You can
cancel upload by pressing 'cancel'.

If you press 'ok', this will block the interface until every log
has been uploaded. This means that if you do not have Internet
connection up and running, the GUI will be frozen until timeout of
the upload part.

After successful upload, the logs are moved to
HOME/.openBmap/Processed_logs by default.

When upload is finished, the result is first displayed (how many logs
have been uploaded out of how many available).
Then a popup window will propose you to delete all (this includes
possible logs from previous upload) the processed logs (located in
HOME/.openBmap/Processed_logs by default).

Warning: you should create an account on realtimeblog.free.fr
website, and fill a correct login/password in the popup window
displayed before upload works.

* A button to exit (if logger is active, it will first stop it
cleanly, and then exit).

Config file and application log are located under HOME/.openBmap
directory by default.

You can modify values in the config files (by editing it). This
way you can have a fine grained control of your logger:

I have tested andy-tracking b8b36e5ec3db71d for a long time and it

The really big improvment from 2.6.24-2.6.28/29 is that the standby
time has improved really much. With this i can firstly carry the phone

What's the contents of the current_now file in /sys in both cases

I added a script in /etc/apm/scripts which logs the current before and
after resume. With kernel andy-tracking 1e257a0e99817a33 it shows 126mA
right after resume. But this seems really high because my fr only uses
49mA when idle with backlight turned off and ~113mA idle with backlight
on (60%). So i don't think that this current is helpful at all.
And which other case do you mean with both cases?

problem is that after suspend the backlight mechanism doesn't recognize
a touch on the screen anymore. Therefor after it dims and gets dark it

That sounds really really odd. Can you reproduce this without having
frameworkd running (it tries to control backlight too)?
Today i updated all packages in debian (quite a lot) and after reboot
the backlight not responding problem doesn't happen after
suspend/resume. So i can't reproduce this problem anymore at the moment.

Which X server are you running?
I use xserver-xglamo because only with this xrandr is working.

Another problem is that the memory consumption on debian is much higher
and the system responsiveness is much slower than before. But this could
also be a problem of other system components which are updated on a
 regular basis.

 ps -eorss,cmd | sort -n?
Please see attachment.

Any idea why wlan isn't working anymore?

Because if the backlight problem doesn't appear anymore my main problem
is only the non working wlan. Not only dhcp is not working. When i add
an ip by hand it also doesn't work.

But iwlist eth0 scan shows my wlan access-point and after ifup eth0
(with no dhcp answer) the command iwconfig eth0 shows that i should be
connected to my AP. Interesting is that iwconfig shows link quality
0/94, signal level -95dBm and noise level 0dBm. But when i do a iwlist
eth0 scan it shows link quality 24/94, signal level -69dBm and noise
level -95dBm for my wlan. These differences in signal quality looks
quite strange to me.

Another mysterious thing is that the wlan connection seems to be
oscillating. When i look at the wlan status page of my AP (dd-wrt linux)
i can see that the wlan client (my fr) is connected for a few seconds
and than disappears in the client list. After a few seconds it appears
and then disappears again and this repeats after a few seconds all the
time i have wlan activated on my fr. I don't think that the problem is
my AP because i got another pc connected to it with a stable connection
and dhcp working.

 Rainer

AGPS Thoughts

2009-03-30 Thread Sebastian Hammerl
Hi,

I am on my way to make agps very useful, so I try to get information
about how to get my rough location.

The perfect way is the cellid you are in. You can get your location with
an aberration of about 3km so you can use it for agps without problems.
Another interesting fact is, that you have it everytime automatically.

So how to get your location out of the cellid? One possibility is to get
it from projects like cellhunter or opencellid or something. But whats
about areas no has ever been?

So I looked out for an alternative way. I live in germany so all about I
am trying to do is working in germany and may be transferred to other
countries, too. We have only 4 mobile phone carriers here in germany.

O2 customers can get the location of the connected cell by using
cellbroadcasting. So O2 customers have no problems. The data is
broadcasted in the Gauß-Krüger-Format so you have to decode it and can
use it.

Last weekend I discovered that t-mobile uses the telephone area code as
the mobile phone local area code (lac). So if you are in an area which
uses 0571 / the lac will be 57XX (in hex). When you get the rough
location for an area code then you can use it for agps, too.

Eplus seems not to have any system in their lac's. I guess its numbered
from north to south but this is not confirmed.

I do not have a vodafone card so I have no information about it yet.

After all O2 customers yould profit from the data for agps and when
there is a way to get coordinates from area codes, tmobile customers as
well. So we just have to code a rough location finder to get the most of
agps.

Why do I tell this all to you? I have some questions and perhaps you
have some ideas and suggestions.

1.) anyone knows a was to get the coordinates of area codes?
2.) anyone wants to try to code something in this direction?
3.) is anyone interested in a program that would give agps the needed
data (so perhaps when I get the time I will start coding :) )

That's all for now, I am very interested in your ideas.

Greetings, Sebastian

Hi Franky,
for me it's not that easy. I just sent another 3 sms and there are no
duplicates for these. But i have 1 duplicate sms from this morning.
I will try to reproduce this problem and take a look. Btw it is
possible to see some trace logs. You will have to enable logging in
Settings-Logging-Categories. Then connect to NEO with ssh, kill qpe
and run:

echo 0 /sys/bus/platform/devices/neo1973-pm-gsm.0/power_on
echo 1 /sys/bus/platform/devices/neo1973-pm-gsm.0/power_on
source /opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/qpe.env

Qtopia will write debugging messages on ssh console. So this could
help.
