Your logo (10) brings the message across very well. I agree on all points and
recognize them in your logo.

Most things I can read from logo 2 as well, except for the Neo-shaped rocket.

Those two actuall were my choices.

I can imagine something :-)

Yes, indeed. Some of the logos look very dynamic as long as all details are
clearly visible, but need more attention before they are recognized.

I like it :-) Two minor points of critisism: I think the gradients are taking
away from the KISS-principle. The brownish/golden logo got glowing letters;
have you tried one-directional glow, as if there's only light shining one side
(or, as if there's only neon on one side); probably under the same angle as
the phone cover is under the motherboard? I think it might connect the image
and the letters (no drop shadows; that would overdo it). Hm... That's a bit
more text than I expected for a minor point ;-)

Re: [Community] OpenPhoenux Logo contest - Phase 2 (voting)

2013-01-14 Thread francesco . devita

Hi
I sent my logo proposal and I would like to explain the work.
It is the #10 but please take a look at
- http://www.openphoenux.org/logo/openphoenux10b.png
- http://www.openphoenux.org/logo/openphoenux10c.png
because the SVG doesn't render correctly in the browser.

What it represents?
It is a stylized GTA04 board, there are four connectors over it and a
smartphone cover underneath it.

Why I chosen this subject?
In choosing the subject I thought about the message to transmit.

What are we talking about? Is it hardware, software, both? Strictly
speaking the GTA04 is a hardware, and I found some key words to work
with: open versatile hackable portable device.
The GTA04, as we know, is not only a board for a phone, it can be used
for a lot of things.
Also, I thought about the perception people have/should have of the
project. Should the logo communicate a link with the old openmoko
project? I thought no, because IMHO out there the mass knows little about
openmoko and maybe only the negative stuff: ugly design, too
expensive, nerd-friendly... So avoid the prejudice and use something
new!
To sum it up, instead to stylize the shape of a Neo Freerunner, I
preferred to be generic.

Finally I avoided the figure of the phoenix. Look out there, there are
an insane number of bird logos, it's not original. In a flock of birds
how can we recognize our own? Simple, do not use a bird.
I don't know in other languages, but in italian these last sentences
could be a hilarious joke, I hope you don't mind (:
A bird logo also doesn't get to the point IMHO. Is it a phone? An OS? A
game console?
The GTA04 is a hardware open to everyone and to everything. So I
tried to represent a hackable hardware.

How I did it?
I tried to follow the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle. My logo
proposal I think is indeed simple. And it has its advantages: it is
good in black and white, it is easy to add colors to it, it is easy
to use in different sizes without loosing the general appearance. It
can be used in almost every condition.

Hope you like it and as always criticisms are welcome.

Regards
Joif

I like number 3 but the legs should be removed.
Number 6 looks good too, but maybe a bit bulky.

I like proposal 8, but i think the chain should be "broken"
one open link, to free the project from the past.

Hello,

So I voted for proposal #5 and #6. I wanted to give a precision for the
proposal #5 : I'd prefer his variant b with "phone" colored letters.

Thanks,
Adrien

Re: [Community] OpenPhoenux Logo contest - Phase 2 (voting)

2013-01-14 Thread Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller
Hi all,
we are currently running a logo contest for the new OpenPhoenux
umbrella project that intends to cover all old and new openmoko
activities.

We have received 11 proposals (and sometimes variants).

You can now participate by judging the proposals. Please think about:

• does it connect to the remains of the original Openmoko project
("Phoenix from the ashes")?
• is it eye-catching, easily remembered, unique?
• does it show some orientation towards future?
• does it carry a positive, inpiring, flying, pushing attitude?
• does it tell about "freedom & openness"?
• do you feel that it represents "your" OpenPhoenux/OpenMoko community?
• can it be recognized that it has something to do with wireless,
portable devices (tablet, smartphone, gadgets etc.)?
• does it look equally good in different sizes?

Now please see yourself and submit your votes (up to 4 favourites):

http://www.openphoenux.org/logo/

Please vote until Tuesday evening (15th Jan 2013, GMT).

You may also discuss pros and cons as a followup to this mail.

Nikolaus
