I agree, and something like this was what I had in mind to create when I started looking at this part of the code with the intent to improve it. (I wasn't too clear on the specifics yet though, and figured I'd better move incrementally since I didn't know much.)

Unfortunately, RL intervened before I really got properly started with it, so I don't have anything to show for my intent yet. By now it has kind of joined my backlog of things I'd like to get around to doing - a list that unfortunately seems to only grow, never shrink. :(

At least this is something that has practical consequences for me, even if not large ones, so I'm still holding out a small hope that the itch will grow large enough again, at a time when I have the time for it...
