Using Debian on the FreeRunner gives access to the huge army of software packaged in the Debian repositories, already compiled for the Neo's arm(v4) processor. Moreover, one can build one's own source files for programs without having to learn the OpenEmbedded way. For an existing Debian/Ubuntu user, choosing Debian for Neo FreeRunner makes phone a very familiar, trustworthy and flexible place to hack in. General news: * The ARM servers sponsored by ARM Ltd. got activated, thus experimental packages are built for arm now. That means also fso-gsmd got built for the Freerunner. * SHR packages have been removed from pkg-fso repository, they all arrived in Debian unstable, and just in time for Debian 6.0 freeze. The biggest hurdle for official FreeRunner support in Debian is the kernel, since basically everything else starts to be in, in one form or another. There are currently two places with FreeRunner related kernels in Debian: * Official kernel support for Neo FreeRunner devices is being developed by worked in a s3c24xx branch at http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-fso/kernel.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/s3c24xx - thanks to Thibaut Girka and Google Summer of Code. * The legacy 2.6.29rc3 kernel at http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-fso/linux-2.6-openmoko.git also saw a slight update in August - this is still included in Debian installations by default Codename: 'sid' Homepage: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnFreeRunner Image: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Debian QtMoko [v26] Qtmoko is distribution for Openmoko Freerunner phone based on debian and qtopia. Re: [Shr-User] New SHR-unstable images with 2.6.32 kernel
On 6/27/10, Martin Jansa martin.ja...@gmail.com wrote: After hopefully lucky incident we have finally switched to new kernel. It's based on 2.6.32.13 and has DRM/KMS enabled. * New images are built with kernel and all needed changes are already included. * Images doesn't have udevd installed by default (using devtmpfs), which makes it boot about twice as fast as before (less then 1 min to PIN dialog). But it also won't mount your uSD automatically (it was blacklisted before, but removing it from blacklist won't help now). * Included packages contains latest stuff like xserver-1.9 (RC3), foxtrotgps and tangogps 0.99.4, QT 4.7.0-beta1 and QML enabled navit. * Distribution revision was changed in OE, this means that every package installed from shr-unstable feeds will be upgraded during next opkg upgrade (so be sure that you have enough time and space in /var partition). Consider flashing new image, it can be faster and safer in the end. * Used GCC was upgraded from version 4.4.4 to 4.5 (svn revision 160764 from gcc-4.5-branch, because released 4.5.0 has few issues on ARM targets). * New GCC brings LTO optimizations, which can give us 30% speedup in some cases, see benchmark results [1]. LTO is not enabled by default yet. * New kernel has some issues, so please try first (on another uSD partition), before upgrading your daily-phone-partition. * The kernel is bigger than 2MB so if you're using u-boot, update your environment according to wiki entry [2]. * With slower uSD you can see unknown-block-device while booting. Flash newer Qi from SHR [3] it is using rootwait instead of rootdelay=1. For u-boot increase rootdelay or use rootwait. * Sometimes (and only on some devices) it can show all white (looks like old WSoD, but it's without death). Suspend/Resume should fix this. * Vibrations are too weak. * See OE changelog [4] and SHR changelog [5]. Well, theoretically, the freq detection is only limited by the mic characteristics and the sample rate. Since I'm sampling at 44100 (after the shift to alsa) - the program should detect upto 20KHz without any prob. I have, however, restricted the freq detection between 20 to 350 Hz (to save on calculations and ease off the lag). As the dsp code gets better (as I experiment with it - hopefully:-) I'll increase the freq range. Does anyone have any inputs about what the range should be? I'm not really looking at covering all the keys in a Piano - but that can be done too - with greater lags. Also - it would be nice to hear about what other instruments are being tuned! Hmmm, time to change the name of the app perhaps?! I'm also in the process of pimping up the GUI. Just thought it would be nice to look at a sexier GTK program! I was kind of going for a guitar fretboard look (I know it's been overdone on the iPhone) but maybe I need to relook that. Any Ideas? Maybe it's possible to create profiles for different instruments. Then the range of the freq detection could be limited and thus we still have fast detection. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Rosetta is at least promising when tweaked and used together with a good word list. What makes it unusable is that the automatic keyboard adds to the screen space needed by rosetta and then there's simply not enough screen left for the main application (e.g. SMS editor) A workaround for this is to re-enable the keyboard toggle applet in /etc/matchbox/session as described in the wiki.
