Re: My solution
For fun you could adjust the accelerometer threshold to be super-sensitive, and then when you drive around corners the display would rotate 90 degrees, giving the virtual illusion* of driving really, really fast! :-) * virtual illusion? You heard it hear first. Yes, that could be a solution. In fact, in the Om2008 repos there is just such a tool, called accel-rotate. However, I find it mildly irritating, since it does not limit rotation to one portrait and one landscape display modes, it can rotate the screen in all 4 directions. In some applications this could actually be a very neat thing, depending on for instance the type of holder you have to clasp your FR. Thusly, if you can only put your FR into a holder upside down due to buttons/cables/whatever, then accell-rotate will allow you to do just that. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: [om2008.9/FDOM] Charging or Long Power On = Crashing?
Boris Wong wrote: I'm working on a theory of prolonged charging leading to the crashing of the Freerunner in FDOM/om2008.9. I'm not saying it's definite, but I have had some experiences of my phone ending up in kernel panic and where the screen would not turn on after overnight charging without suspension. Here is the scenario: I plug in my Freerunner to the wall adaptor, to let it charge overnight. I do not use suspension, but I do have the screen turn off automatically. I sometimes don't unplug/plug it in again to make the charging indicator (red light and the charging symbol on the screen) appear. In the morning (6+ hours later), the phone will be in kernel panic or the device will be on without the screen (calls and things get through, monitor does not come on). The questionable theory: Is there any chance that, since the kernel is not aware that the device is charging (even though the device still charges to full), will create crashes or reverse the loop of the battery indicators? I'm aware that this is a smart battery which can dish out statistics. If the FR does not know that it is charging, but the power is going up, I might think that that may cause problems with the logging and power handling from the kernel. Just a theory, but I really want to get rid of kernel panics and crashes after not shutting down for a long time. Any other theories floating out there that we might want to consider? All things wifi, including known issues and a link to Tom's article, are here: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_FreeRunner_Wifi As blogs tend be general, linking specifically within wifi might not be appropriate but a link to the troubleshooting page within wifi that then allows you to choose internal or external sources of information sounds better and keeps the non-official documentation contained and a little more consolidated for all areas of troubleshooting. For actual wiki content this isn't a problem but it would allow for an actual troubleshooting index of wiki approved content as well. I imagine linking directly, even if only to the selected blogs page, may require more maintenance down the track as online information is pretty fluid and relevance can change pretty quickly. If the site disappeared you'd have to modify more than one page to accommodate it. Having two primary links, faqs and troubleshooting, seems less confusing and easier to maintain to me. Charging a Neo battery in a Nokia charger or phone (was: Re: dead battery)
The battery usually lays in just like it does in the phone. The battery will fit into the Nokia, but I'd be surprised if the Nokia agreed to charge it, since it won't recognize it. Exactly right. My understanding is this: Nokia devices (phones and stand-alone chargers) will not charge non-Nokia batteries, most likely because they can't be sure they have the correct charging parameters. Most after-market or no-name brands of Nokia-compatible chargers don't test the make of the battery, most likely because adding the capability to perform this test would add to the cost of the charger. Thus: * You can use a Nokia or Nokia-compatible BL-4C, BL-5C, or BL-6C in the Neo * You can charge the Neo battery in a Nokia-compatible charger that is not Nokia branded * You can NOT charge the Neo battery in a Nokia branded phone or charger Michael ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Since you found it illuminating, I'll add it to the wiki Do you happen to know if a Nokia battery (such as the BL-5c) will charge in the FreeRunner? Excellent question. That's the one case I left out. I'm pretty sure it does, because I'm pretty sure that we do not check for battery brand. Any checking of battery brand would happen in software, where we can see it (and remove if desired). True, there is a chip that handles charging, but I'm pretty sure that battery brand is not one of the parameters we feed it. Perhaps one of the kernel people can confirm this. Michael Shiloh wrote: My old phone works as a daily phone. I bought the FR for what I did not have - misery. Sorry everyone, I found that comment amusing and was going to respond in some clever way, then changed my mind, and unfortunately sent the partially composed message. To paraphrase the original poster, we buy the FR for what we don't have - a generic Linux computer in a cellphone, on which we can develop all manner of applications in any language we chose, without the constraints of the carrier or the cellphone provider I appreciate that many of you purchased the FR to use as your daily phone. But I really believe that the magic of Openmoko comes from what we do with this platform that is different from, and way beyond, a mere phone. That is why the discussion about extending the FR with external sensors interested me so much. So what other ideas do you all have of ways to extend the utility of the FreeRunner? In what ways can you make it more than a cellphone? (and I don't limit this to physical extensions.) How can we all rise above the current issues with GSM, SMS, etc. and create the device of the future? My plan: I am going to take the ideas gathered in the discussion about reporting the tides (when they drifted (pun intended) into case modifications and external sensors) and build an extended FreeRunner. I plan to use a Pelican case and either an Arduino, EZ-USB, or MAKE Controller Kit to interface to external sensors and perhaps also actuators, like hobby servo motors. What is it going to be? I'm thinking we need to make a generic expandable water proof (or at least harsh conditions proof) case for the FR. For rapid prototyping, the very best interface would be USB. Future applications might tie in at a more intimate level. At least for the sensors mentioned so far the data rate is slow enough that our USB could easily handle it. Some Pelican cases have a clear cover. I've wondered if there exist waterproof button activators that transmit force via a magnet, like magnetic stirrers or pumps, so that there is no hole in the case, no gaskets, and no place to leak (assuming the original case is waterproof in the first place). Broadcast receiver based on FreeRunner (openmokast): Answers to some questions
I collected some questions from the community, which Jean-Michel Bouffard, a Research Engineer at the Communications Research Centre in Canada, graciously agreed to answer. I hope to see his work inspire similar projects: (Note: The attachment (*) Jean-Michel mentions below will be placed on downloads or some such place shortly) == It will be a pleasure answering some of your questions. In particular, people are interested in whether the plastic or the hardware will be available to the public, even in small, experimental quantities, and beyond, whether you know of any commercial modules that might be substituted for your custom modules. The plastic part was designed from the case CAD files that were released on the openmoko.com website. I attached (*) a model that can be seen using the free edrawings viewer (http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/). We will most probably release the source ProE model of the backplate extension as soon as the author agrees. From the source ProE model, we have ordered a small quantity of 3D printouts in ABS from a local company (http://cimetrixsolutions.com/). Other provider of such custom ABS parts could also be http://www.protomold.com or https://www.redeyerpm.com For the hardware module, it was provided by a manufacturer but we are in a discussion process with them so nothing will be released for now. To sum it all up we are not planning to release any hardware ourselves but after we release the extension ProE files, people will be able to order plastic parts themselves. And hopefully our discussion with receiver manufacturer(s) should result in a receiver commercially available with the driver included in openmokast. So I suggest that you register to our RSS feed (http://openmokast.org/index.php?option=com_rd_rssid=2) to stay current with the news. We are also interested in details such as how the hardware was connected. We note with pleasure that the software is open-sourced, and wonder how independent the hardware layer is, so that it might be replaced with drivers for e.g. an off-the-shelf receiver of some sort. The hardware uses a USB interface so it was connected to the USB port of the FreeRunner from inside the case. When setting USB in host mode and the host mode in type 1, the FreeRunner is able to power the broadcasting receiver from its battery. I personally am fascinated by your previous work with Gumstix and SDR, as I am an amateur radio operator (KA6RCQ). It has been an interest of mine to fashion some sort of ham SDR on external hardware, and then to use the FreeRunner as the GUI and the audio IO device. Is any of your work on this available to the public? This work on SDR was conducted by a completely different team from the CRC so I cannot say if they have ever released some of their work to the public. Were you speaking to yourself on the other computer, so not over the Internet? Yes, locally. I have tried and connected over the internet. Wireless going out over a 512/512Kb ADSL line and connecting to an actual Video Conferencing endpoint another ADSL line. I have 2 ADSL lines. Doing the above with Ekiga *some* muffled distorted sounds go back and forth. I receive the picture from the endpoint. But that stops updating straight away. Then sound stops. Limiting the call to audio only, I have had both SIP and H239 calls with Ekiga with the similar audio results. Received audio clearly on the FreeRunner for a while. Muffled distorted hardly going out. But after a while things don't well. I've used Ekiga a fair bit but know it can get dodgy over that ADSL line. I have been able to initiate and receive calls calls using Linphone over the Internet using the above gear. But I have not managed to get audio up and down. I have also been unable to get audio up and down with my laptop with Linphone so that problem is not only with the Openmoko. I have received the no webcam image from my laptop on the endpoint. All the routing from the firewall on the laptop/Freerunner end should be fine. I have tried linphone with and without the firewall setting. At some point I'm going to try setting the endpoint and phone up together on the same local switch. That will make it easier to work where the problems are. [Fwd: Re: Open Broadcasting Phone at BA2008]
I'd like to bring to your attention an amazing project. From their website: The Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting (MMB) team of the Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) will showcase its new broadcasting handset prototype called openmokast in Amsterdam at the IBC 2008 exhibition this week. The prototype, based on the Openmoko FreeRunner manufactured by FIC Inc., is the first open handset to integrate the reception of live digital radio, video and data services with typical smart phone functions such as mobile telephony, wireless internet and GPS Some details: * A functional USB DAB/DMB receiver inserted inside a case extension, the design of which was based on the Openmoko CAD files * Custom software that can now receive live DAB/DMB radio and decode different types of services such as: - Musicam audio - DAB+ audio - Slideshow - Journaline text news (The software is available as a package from the download section on their website but it can be used only with input files because the hardware receiver is not available to the public.) Moreover, this OpenMoko based DAB/DMB receiver will be shown at the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC2008) in Amsterdam later this week. I'm working on documenting various aspects of our USB port. We believe that the FreeRunner USB port should be capable of delivering the standard USB high current of 500mA. We also believe that we respond properly to USB negotiation of this current, up from the minimum of 100mA. I suddenly remembered that someone posted about using a USB keyboard that didn't work due to high current. However, the FreeRunner should be able to provide exactly as much current as a desktop PC, which I assume works with this keyboard. It worked quite well: I was able to keep the unit powered on for over 12 hours and still had some juice left over to make some phone calls at the end of the day. However, I noticed that the FR was only drawing 100mA. I was sort of hoping that the battery pack would emulate a USB host and negotiate current, but it looks like it just has available power. Anyway, I saw on http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/USB_charger that the included AC adapter has a 47.5 kOhm resistor betwen ID and GND. Like many other people on this list, I have dozens of USB A to Mini-B cables cluttering the house, and I figured it might be a neat idea to cut a cable, splice it short (about 20cm or so), and add a resistor. This cable would be used only for charging with the battery pack. I don't like the idea of having to switch the FR to force fast charge, possibly forgetting to switch it back before plugging it into a computer, and possibly destroying the USB port on the computer and/or the FR. A dedicated charging cable would make this simpler. Problem is, the ID pin apparently exists only on the Mini-B connector, and doesn't have a corresponding wire inside the USB cable. Has anybody on the list done USB connector hacking, and have any tips on how to get a resistor in there without interfering with plug in operation? Also, what part of the software exactly is responsible for charger detection? I guess another possibility is to hack the software to recognize shorted data pins as a charger. I have another device with a charger that identifies itself by shorted data pins, but more importantly, shorting the data pins is a much easier mod to perform on a USB cable. I suppose the easiest option would be to cut off the end of a FR charger (or other compatible charger with a resistor across GND and ID) and splice it with a USB cable... but I would like to hear other suggestions that people may have. 1. I'm working on an adapter using a 5 pin mini USB connector from Digikey (p/n H2958-ND CONN PLUG MINI USB2.0 5POS ) 2. Belkin makes a 5-conductor mini-USB to USB cable, useful as a start for another hacking project. http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=128038 3. It's possible that the ID resistor in the FR charger is in the wall-wart portion and not at the mini USB connector. 4. Re: Om2008.8: execute script on incoming call
Ole Kliemann wrote: Hi everyone! I'd like to have a file where I put in phonenumber /path/to/shellscript Everytime an incoming call matches one of the numbers in this file, the device just hangs up and executes the corresponding script. Cool application. This plus Arduino could be the bases of some nice remote control. Someone suggested awhile ago a rules based engine. This sounds like a perfect start to that engine, if it is appropriately generalized. Anyone know if that rules based engine was started? Re: USB host successes
Joel Newkirk wrote: I've been playing around with USB host mode for a couple weeks now, and wanted to itemize my results. (previously touched on some of this in one of the USB keyboard threads and on my blog) Any questions just ask, but I mostly envision this as a thread where we can post results of various USB hostmode tests. (to hopefully make their way onto the wiki after some consolidation, cross-checking, and editing) The needed cable arrived just before I flashed to 2008.08 - 2007 didn't acknowledge keyboard, and ethernet wasn't in my hands then, other results here apply to both 2008.08 (currently Raster's image upgraded via Zecke-dev feeds) and 2007.02 versions. 2gb thumbdrive - automounts, reads writes fine. ('Plain' Sony thumbdrive, no encryption or compression, VFAT) keyboards - most work flawlessly when plugged in (3 out of 4 tested), including automatically disabling software keyboard. (Thanks Raster!!) The one tested that did not work is a Dell multimedia keyboard with 2-port USB hub and volume knob as a second USB device - it also states that it draws 1.5A, so I was unsurprised when it didn't power up. Canon S410 Elph digital camera - (self-powered) lsusb shows the device, no drivers installed. (I'd like to be able to transfer pix from the camera to the Freerunner) Epson printer - (self powered) device is visible in lsusb, no driver support installed/configured on my Freerunner yet... Logitech webcams (Quickcam Communicate STX and Quickcam Chat [IIRC]) - device visible in lsusb, but gspca and usb-video kernel modules are unavailable ATM. Netgear wifi adapter - powers device, lsusb shows it, no support enabled in kernel AFAIK. Not really necessary on GTA02, though there are some scenarios to utilize dual wifi, especially if at least one supports Wifi Master mode. (iwconfig refuses on built-in wifi so presumably driver doesn't support, at least - I'd love to get madwifi going, but suspect the SDIO interface leaves us unsupported there since they won't even support USB wifi devices with the same chipset as a supported PCI wifi card) Ethernet 10/100 adapter - arrived today, works perfectly. Plugged into ethernet then USB, and Freerunner powers device, establishes ethernet link on eth1, and picks up IPs and routing. Perfect, beautiful, and painfree. Pinging Google less than 7 seconds after plugging in. That last one, ethernet, just made my Freerunner an indispensable network diagnostic tool. :) (now I just need tshark/wireshark, ettercap, handy things like that) I'm likely going to order a second, see if there's any way I can position the Freerunner mid-cable with the two ethernets bridged, and sniff traffic. ;) (obviously would be limited by USB 1.1 bandwidth but probably still useful - the question is really whether the Freerunner can power a hub and two adapters) I will add this to the wiki right away, and correct as the discussion continues. This info is too good to lose in the mailing list (although I guess you could say it's not much worse than getting lost in the wiki, and perhaps better, since the mailing list archives are more easily searched than the wiki). Re: Third request: what *is* the warranty on the Freerunner?
Steve Mosher wrote: you may have the same problem I discovered some while back. When I wore my tester hat. Micheal may be able to help you. Micheal, can you assist here? or tony? There was a response (before Steve's) that suggested a battery issue. I agree with that, and would want first to confirm that the battery is not dead. Can you measure the battery voltage, or test with another battery? tokenwizard wrote: I have one for you... I have been using my freerunner for about three weeks now. I ordered it through Koolu.com as soon as it was possible and I got it about three weeks later. The OM2007 on it was next to useless so I updated and found a bit more functionality. Later I installed Qtopia and I really liked that most of the functionality was there, but I still wanted to run an OM distro, so I tried the ASU 2008.8. I really dislike where that one is going as far as the illume UI. So I went back to 2008.4 and kept it that way for a bit. TOday I plugged my phone into the USB on my PC to charge as I always have (while the phone was running) and the screen immediately went black. No, with this being a development phone, this didn't really phase me at first. This thing has seen its fair share of mysterious power issues. But this time was different. No matter what I do, I cannot get the damn thing to come back to life. I know it's not the battery because it was almost half full when I plugged it in. But I have tried holding the Power button for 10 seconds, and the Power/Aux and Aux/Power combos. I've tried these thing both with and without the AC adapter attached and after pulling the battery for about a minute. It seems as I have a dead phone now. I don't even hear that distinctive little hiss that you normally hear when you first press the Power button! Anybody seen this before?? James steve-2 wrote: I have a tiny tiny head so all the hats fit. we are putting together a policy for people who bought from the openmoko store. there are several issues. We offer a 14 day DOA Warrenty and a 28 day warrenty for 10 packs. The issue is what does DOA mean? Dead on Arrival. If your GSM doesnt work, but getting a download fixes it? is that DOA? If your GSM doesnt work but getting a new card fixes it? is that DOA? same with GPS, did the software download fix it? If you send the phone back and it works fine, what to do? if you send back a phone and it works fine, who pays for shipping? Now in the US at retail you can return something if the sky is blue. We can't work that way and build a open source phone. well, we can but the cost of blue sky returns would have to be added to the phone. In the end, as micheal will tell you, I work every case. So, If you have a problem, email me or micheal. tell us that you tried the fixes we suggested. And we will work from there. I'm hoping that at some point the squeaky wheel cliche will work itself out and we'll get an answer. The boxes the Freerunners came in gave no information about warranty, we need to hear from Openmoko about what exactly the warranty does cover? My understanding of the warranty time limit is that single purchases got a 14-day warranty, and group purchases were given a 28-day warranty, but we've never been told what the warranty includes. I'd really like to outline some of this on the wiki since we're cleaning it all up, etc., and since few users will ever search the mailing list archives anyway. Will it include any recall/repairs needed to fix the GPS/SD problems at a hardware level? Thanks, Ian Ian, I agree with you, and I'm sure Steve and Sean (and everyone at Openmoko) do as well. I'm sure that the only reason that Steve has not responded (for he is the one to respond to this) is that he is completely overwhelmed by email, manufacturing and shipping, and releasing stuff this week. He is wearing the hats of Marketing, Operations, Manufacturing, Shipping, Testing, Hardware and Software final test, Field Engineer Manager, Customer Service Manager, Product Oversight (a new category I just created), Trade Show Coordinator, Vertical Market Manager, and many others I can't even remember. I will be talking to him today and I'll see if we can address this issue. Re: Krells!
Dale Maggee wrote: If you're like me, you're a big fan of gkrellm, and you always have it running so you can keep an eye on what your system is doing. I wanted to have a remote display of my FR CPU usage on my host, for the same reason - to be able to see at a glance what's going on. Looking at gkrellm's man page, I discovered that it can monitor a remote host which is running gkrellmd - the gkrellm daemon. So I downloaded the source and tried to compile the daemon for the freerunner using the toolchain (I haven't got the mokomakefile set up yet). I wasn't able to build an ipkg, but I was able to run the resulting binary on the freerunner, then connect to it from my host, achieving just what I wanted. screenshot: http://users.on.net/~antisol/krells.jpg (the krell on the left is the freerunner, the other one is my host) the gkrellmd binary: http://users.on.net/~antisol/gkrellmd.tar.gz to use it, just untar the binary, scp it to your freerunner, run gkrellmd -d on your freerunner, then run gkrellm -s freerunner ip on your host. it takes a while (~10 seconds) to connect, so be patient. Hopefully somebody else will find this usefull! :) adds this to list of things you can't do with any other phone Cheers, -Dale This is awesome. Thanks! And thanks too for showing how you did this. I want to order mine but I'm afraid they'd charge a premium at the border to let it through. Did you check the distributor section of our website? I think Koolu has a USA address as well now.
