Maybe it's a matter of different expectations? Are you saying you've

regular basis because the phone would hang and I'd get nothing until I

v19, because v18’s 2.6.32 kernel lacks support for both RNDIS and USB

I was using SHR the most before I gave up. I never tried QtMoko - I
had used QtEI for a while, but found it frustrating because most of
the interesting software for the FR didn't work on it, although I
understand they've fixed that in QtMoko. It was probably about as
stable a phone as SHR was.

The N900 lacks USB Host support at the hardware level.  I guess this
does not matter to you, but I might miss it because I have used USB Host
 multiple times on my FR.

Yeah, I'd never used host support on my FR, so that didn't matter to me much.

Hey Woody,

Just a word of warning - the FR is a very fun device to play with -
but if you expect it to be a fully functioning phone, you will
probably be disappointed. I tried to use it as my cell phone for a
long time, and found it *very* frustating - regularly missed calls and

I've been using an N900 for a couple of months now, and am very happy

Good luck.

Re: [Shr-User] Quick e-mail poll: Still using your Freerunner?

2010-02-11 Thread Warren Baird
I haven't turned my FR on since I got a nokia n900 a few weeks back. It has
all of the things that appeal to me about the FR - I can 'apt-get install'
the software I want, I can ssh into it, etc. *BUT* it's better in so many
ways. The UI is so much more responsive, the phone is so much more
reliable. I can confidently make and receive calls! It has fantastic
built-in email and IM apps, and I can run pidgin for IRC. Evince works
great, and the wide screen display is gorgeous for reading e-books. It very
reliably connects to wifi... It does a great job of playing SD TV episode
video. I could go on for a while longer...

About the only real negative I've noticed is that the battery life isn't
great - I get maybe 12-14 hours on a charge --- it doesn't seem to be
suspending at all in the sense that the FR does - I think it just blanks the
screen and maybe slows the processor down...

Oh, and the equivilent app to 'openmoocow' isn't quite as nice - which is
almost a deal-breaker for my 2.5 year old daughter - she definitely prefers
the FR.

anyone's fault, and in fact I'm very impressed at the improvements that have
been made. In my more optimistic moments, I think the FR might at least
become a usable phone with limited smartphone capabilities in the near
future...

Sounds like a plan.
We all want a 100% free phone, but we gain nothing from building on sand.
So with the FreeRunner in the state it is, I think development will
 fragment
for a while, until it comes together again in a new attempt at a 100% free
phone one day. Until then, if the hardware is not stable you cannot do
 kernel
development, if the kernel is not stable you cannot do middleware, if
middleware is not stable you cannot do apps.
Doing it all at the same time like with the FreeRunner lead to what you
 described above.

Yeah, I think that's a lot of the problem... when you combine unstable HW
with unstable kernel, it's very hard to build a solid phone stack... but I
don't think that the work going on now is wasted - it's (slowly) converging
towards a pretty good phone stack, and I think once there's a good candidate
for decent hardware with a reasonable kernel, it'll be quite impressive.

It's the only one that seems to have realistic possibility of some day
having a free distribution running with all features enabled. But it's
not today, and it remains to be seen how active the community around
 it is.

Depends a bit on how you define 'free'... I interact with a phone mostly
as a user, and possibly as a app developer - so for me if I can run free
software on it, and I can develop free software for it using free tools,
it's 'free enough'...I really want a device that I can use as a phone,
and a hand-held linux box. The FR does the hand-held linux box part very
well, but not so much the phone part.

I've been using my FR for 1.5 years, as my primary phone for a lot of that
time(on QtEI and the more recently shr-u), and I must admit I'm getting more
and more frustrated with it - between the regular crashes and hangs, the
incredibly slow performance (so slow that I still occasionally miss a call
because I can't unlock the phone in time to answer it), the horrible GPRS
performance, and the various idiosyncracies (like the recent 'feature' to
progressively dim the screen while I'm trying to use it, inability to
connect to wifi much of the time, etc.)...

There have been improvements, but it's been very slow, and IMO we're still a
*long* way from having a phone with even a half-decent user experience...
and there is nothing we can do can fix issues like the poor glamo bandwidth,
and the crappy GPRS performance. When I'm out of the house and need to look
something up on the web, I borrow my wife's Iphone - I can look up what I
need before the FR's browser finishes launching, let alone loading the
google homepage...

Unfortunately, I've been actively looking for a device lately to replace my
FR - I'm just too fed up with it. The N900 is currently my leading
contender. I had originally written it off, because it doesn't support the
3G data frequencies currently available here in Montreal - but I realized
the other day that it's 'fallback' data support is EDGE, not GPRS. The
*fallback* on this phone is still 20x to 50x faster than the best data
tranfer rate I can get on the FR...

And to be blunt, I don't give a damn if the battery loading software isn't
open... As long as it's a linux stack, and it's easy to cross-compile the
app software I want for it, using the standard open source libs I'm familiar
with --- that's free enough...

So long, and thanks for all the fish...

Obviously, if the WM was deciding orientation based on the device

Re: Ideal screen rotation

I meant that it should *constrain* the behaviour of rotation - more or less
like omnewrotate behaves now, but skipping over the two 'incorrect'
orientations.

so if the app says 'landscape', it's still flip between xrandr -o 1 and
xrandr -o 3 as you rotate the phone, but won't flip to xrandr -o 0 or xrandr
-o 2.

I don't think it will normally makes sense for an application to
specficially request 'xrandr -o 3' - they will usually just want to be sure
that they are displayed in portrait or landscape mode.

I've been using epdfview a lot lately, and I'd love to be able to constrain
it to only show up in landscape mode...

Given that these properties are for the orientation an application
requests (to the WM) should ideally be used, I'm not sure how the actual
rotation would help? Working from rotation would also complicate the
behaviour on devices that are normally landscape - such as the Nokia N900.

What I'm suggesting is that the application just says landscape or
portrait, and then the WM would decide the most appropriate way to
orient the screen for that device.

If an application doesn't request either landscape or portrait, then the
WM would rotate the screen according to the device orientation, through
each of the positions the device could be held (including inverted). So
the WM definitely needs to know the actual orientation of the device
(such as from the FSO api), but I think the application itself only
needs to request Landscape, Portrait or neither.

A map might be one situation where incremental scrolling is better than
paging - I certainly use it a lot on my desktop when using google maps, for

I'm running a build from August but last upgraded on Sept 5th and it's
pretty stable. Had a few reports of bad audio quality, and a couple of

believe was basically a copy of the Sept 15th build of shr-u, and it was a
lot less stable.

I definitely think there are many valid reasons for multi-booting.

I have a slightly more interesting issue - my aux button doesn't work any

Re: new Android Cupcake release for Freerunner

Hi Neils,
It's unfortunate that Koolu has gone unresponsive. I know maddog was at
one point reading this list - if he still is, perhaps he can comment on the
status of things.

The google code wiki is kinda sparse (understandable since it's so new), and
the android sections on the openmoko wiki seem to be quite out of date.

Is there a summary somewhere around what works and what doesn't, and how
close it is to being usable as an 'every day' phone?

 Hi there,

As some of you might know, it appears that Koolu is no longer working on
migrating Android to Freerunner. The community has tried to contact the
Koolu people to get some sense of direction (including Jon Mad Dog Hall),
 but no response.

Because of the lack of direction, it was difficult to assess the risk of
Koolu pulling the plug and thereby loosing the code (including community
patches), mailinglist etc. The community therefore decided to start hosting
the code and mailinglist. This was announced yesterday, September 20th.

On top of this, the community immediately released their first release of
Android Cupcake! Version 0.1 of Android Cupcake for the Freerunner is now
available for download. For those of you who've already tried Android, it is
a well functioning (and pollished!) distro for your Freerunner.

Let's hope the project can keep and gain some momentum. If you wan to try
and be part if it, everything is at your disposal.

I'll also try to put this in the community updates.

All details are in Jim Ancona's mail.

I'm glad to announce a new Android Cupcake release for Freerunner!

It's basically a merge of the Koolu code with Michael Trimarchi's
enhancements and a few bug fixes and cosmetic things I've added. You can
download it at our new Google Code site:
 http://android-on-freerunner.googlecode.com/files/android-on-freerunner-cupcake-0.1.zip

Installation instructions are the same as for the recent Koolu betas:
 - Unpack the files on to a FAT formatted SD card.
 - Insert card into the Freerunner, and boot from NOR menu (hold AUX key,
 then power)
 - Choose Boot from SD Card (FAT and ext2)
The automated install process should begin.

It installs the Qi bootloader, reboots, the kernel, reboots, then installs
 the system image.

 *NOTE:*
This install process overwrites *everything* on the NAND inthe phone,
including the bootloader. If this is not what you would like to do, please
 don't install this release!

We'd love to have an SDcard installer, if someone would like to contribute
it. The Google Code site includes a bug tracker. We've got a couple bugs
added already. Please add any others you find. The code for the release is
hosted at Gitorious, because Google Code doesn't support Git. The consensus
of the discussions here seemed to be that we should have our own mailing
list, so I've also created one at Google Groups. The URL to join it is below

I'd really like this to become a real community project, so please help by
contributing what you can. Not money, but bug reports (or even better, bug
reports with patches), other code, or documentation. We have a wiki at the
Google Code site. Anyone who would like to create content for it, please
contact me and I'll add you to the project. I hope we can create a vibrant
community around Android on Freerunner, and that you can help!

Re: SHR-U: Mokonnect...

2009-09-16 Thread Warren Baird
I must admit that even though I generally prefer gui tools for this kind of
thing - life got a lot easier once I bit the bullet and just created a
wpa_supplicant config file with all the networks I usually connect to in it.

I created a 'connect_wifi' script that basically does fsoraw -r WiFi --
wpa_supplicant - etho0 -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

when I want to use wifi I just start terminal - do connect_wifi , and
then once it connects I do a udhcpc, and I'm done.

After suspending I wait for wpa_supplicant to reconnect, and then have to
manually do a udhcpc again.

It's far from ideal - but it's given me much more reliable wifi connectivity
than when I was trying to mofi or mokonnect.

Good luck.

Re: For all ya BFS (brain fuck scheduler) lovers out there

2009-09-16 Thread Warren Baird
I decided to try a semi-formal experiment... I haven't had time to do
multiple repetitions but I figured I'd share anyways. I'm running shr-u
updated about a week ago. My process was that I rebooted my FR, ran
through a set of steps, at each point timing how long it took from starting
the action (clicking on the icon, eg) to when the screen was finished
redrawing.

I ran through two processes I do regularly - start GPS, start up claws mail,
and open my inbox, and then the second was to open the messages program. I
then rebooted and did the entire process again, with the only difference
being that I started up the terminal, added 'NO_NEW_FAIR_SLEEPERS' to the
scheduler, closed the terminal, and repeated the process. At the end of
each process I used the illume 'next window' arrow to flip through all the
open windows twice - 5 separate windows - waiting for a full redraw before
proceeding,

starting claws-mail was noticable faster - 18s vs. 23s (about 20% faster),
and opening the inbox was also faster 14s vs 18s. Unfortunately the SHR
settings panel and SHR messages were about the same.Swapping windows was
also a lot quicker - 15s vs. 10s.

It'd be good if we had more info - but based on this, it definitely looks
like a win to leave enabled.

8) time between pressing 'call' and call actually being made (faster)

I was swapping through all visible screens twice - waiting for the redraw

If I call myself from a land line using SHR-U, I see the screen turn on at

I *think* that this is related to the kernel logging - there are

I must admit that I switched from OM2009 to SHR-U about a month ago now,
since it looked like nothing was happening.

I must admit that aside from Paroli (which apparently is coming soon to
SHR-U - or already there), it wasn't obvious to me what the difference in
goals were - the two environments seemed pretty similar, and seemed to be
trying to do basically the same thing.

If the effort being put into OM2009 was to instead be put into making an SHR
Testing build that is a bit more up-to-date, and is kept stable, that would
make me pretty happy.

I don't see at this point why it makes sense to continue to put effort into
OM2009 as a distro...

Putting the *S*table back in *S*HR!

2009-08-27 Thread Warren Baird
hey all,

As I (and others) mentioned in the recent OM2009 thread - One of the great
advantages of SHR is that it is being developed so quickly. However, I'd
also say that one of the great *DIS*advantages of SHR is that it's being
developed so quickly that it's often not very stable, and the 'testing'
build is woefully out of date.

I don't have very much spare time in my life right now, so I unfortunately
can't take it on myself, but I think it'd be very beneficial if someone was
willing to step up and take charge of getting shr-testing updated
periodically, and maybe even releasing an shr-stable that has at least some
of the snazzy stuff from shr-u in it.

I can help with stability testing, and maybe a bit of documentation, but I
can't go much beyond that...

Anyone else willing and able to take this on?

Re: [ALL] New showroom for Openmoko apps

2009-08-25 Thread Warren Baird
My opinion is that building a tool like this ourselves is definitely the
last resort - we have limited resources for the FR - let's not spend them
re-inventing the wheel.

I'm not so sure about seperating out comments and information based on the
distribution / app version / etc... would it be possible to put everything
in one app-centric place, but tag the comments etc. with
version/distro/etc?

One use case that I think is very valuable it be able to see what everyone
else is saying about an app - for instance does MyMailApp work well with
IMAP - that's not generally going to be tied to a specific distro, and not
necessarily to a specific version. If I have to go through a bunch of
different pages to see all the comments people have added about MyMailApp,
it'd be quite annoying.

Of course, another question is does MyMailApp 0.93 work on SHR-Unstable
built on Aug 15th - for that you'd like to be able to filter comments by
distro and app-version...

distro, one of the goals is that the info can be reused, so if in this

Also, I would love to see self-built packages abbandoned at all and

Distro mantainers have to work towards including this apps on their
distros to not let scape any of those cool apps (duke3d, doom, are an
example of cool apps lost in the distro evolutions)

Can't agree more. Application developers just have to provide distro
friendly sources (preferrably git or svn repo, but tarball hosted on
trusted server is also ok), packaging and integrating into distro has
to be done by distro developers. This way packages won't be out of
date and data in showroom will be really easier to maintain.

I suggest that the working hardware box of V3 be moved to the first

Now i get it :). Excuse me but my English speaking skills fails

Re: Any distro with working calls?

2009-07-20 Thread Warren Baird
I've had pretty good luck with both QtEI (now called qtmoko) and OM2009TR5 -
On OM2009 I had to tweak the default alsa config a bit. A thread about it,
with what I did and various comments is at
http://n2.nabble.com/-om2009-r4--Warren%27s-Settings-Worked-for-Me-%28was-Re%3A-Om2009-testing--release-4%29-tp3022756p3022756.html
- note that there is some debate over whether this is a good idea.

If you are having problems with the audio quality, I'd suggest you get a
buzz fix as soon as possible. Until then, I'd suggest you tweak the alsa
config file to see if you can get something usable - my process was to set
my laptop next to a landline - run alsamixer via ssh, and then dial the
landline from my FR. I then basically experiemented with the controls
described in http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_Freerunner_audio_subsystemuntil
I got something relatively buzz-free that still let me hear the other
end.

Re: New Open Hardware company

2009-07-20 Thread Warren Baird
Hi Steve,

Congratulations! Sounds like a very interesting project.

The geek in me is say - W00t - when can I get one!

Unfortunately, the product manager in me is sounding a bit more like
Laszlo: raising questions like: What's the business model - are you
targeting end-users, or are you trying to convince someone to OEM the
design, customize it and market it to end-users?

Personally I kinda hope you are targeting OEMs, although I don't see much of
a mention of that on the website so far.If you are targeting end-users,
it seems to me that you are falling into the same trap that OpenMoko did -
building some cool hardware, and assuming that the software side will
eventually happen.

If however you have one or more visionary OEMs who will take your tech and
build a compelling solution around it, that could be very interesting. I
really believe that a device like this needs to have a seamless, well
integrated hardware and software stack to be successful.

For example, a device that a project manager inspecting a construction site
could take with them and use to record the results of a site inspection
could be very intersting.I'm not sure that the nano-note is the right
form-factor for that, but something similar might work.

My day job involves creating software for visual collaboration used across a
wide range of industries - if you want to chat more about that, send me an
email off list...

To try and get some of this off the mailing list and into the wiki, I've
created a 'Successful Use Cases' wiki page:

The idea is to gather together all the cool things people are doing with the
FR, and to give hints to others about how best to do things like read a pdf,
send an IM, or how to disable an alien mothership.

I hope anyone who is doing interesting things with their FR can add a quick
note there describing what they are doing.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for all this - like most people here, I think this is fantastic news
that gives me some meagre hope for the future of the freerunner.

On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 8:11 PM, Jon 'maddog' Hall mad...@li.org wrote:

One of the issues here is that the project has not exactly been focused
on one stack of softwareergo the number of cycles that it is taking
to get any one stack ready has taken a long time. IMHO this is both a
blessing and a curse. A blessing because the hardware and kernel are
tickled in many ways, making the kernel more robust in the long run
and a person has choice in the software stack. A curse because instead
of one intense effort we have several somewhat coordinated efforts.

My feeling is that the GTA02 device itself is in pretty good shape
compared to the software it runs. So how will the community benefit
 from a GTA03?

Yes, I agree the GTA02 is in pretty good shape compared to the
software it runs. However, it is in good shape for the middle of
2008.not necessarily for the year 2009 or even the end of 2008.

Eventually the tide will turn and the software will be in good shape
while the hardware is perceived as being long in the tooth.

I hope you are are right that eventually the software will be in better
shape than the hardware. I must admit that in my less optimistic moments,
I wonder about that. The progress towards a stable, easily usable distro
for the FR has been slow.

I agree that finding people who can work on the phone software is a lot
easier than hardware, and I think that this current opportunity is great.
However, I also think that at the moment the software environment requires a
*lot* of work to be ready for more mainstream users.

I'm very happy to hear that there is an organization that can help move the
hardware forward... However, until there's a software environment that is
feature-complete, user-friendly, and stable enough that a mainstream user
can use it, I don't think we're going to find that the 10,000 unit
production limit is a big issue.

Your goals about 100M units sound fantastic - but I think to get to even 1M
units we're going to need a rock-solid, but most importantly, a very
user-friendly software environment. something at least as pretty and easy
to use as a Pre or an iPhone. I'm not convinced that can happen without
more backing than any of the current projects seem to have - you need people
trained in usability, tonnes of usability testing across a wide range of
audiences, etc.

I know it's a lot to ask, but I don't suppose you've got another ace up your
sleeve? A university with a usability lab and an interest in the usability
of hand-held devices?

I must disagree. SHR is progressing really fast, almost every day
there is work on it or FSO, which SHR uses. There are also many
initiatives unvisible from normal user's point of view, but
 development moves forward very quickly.

There will be soon opimd integration, SHR Installer, and few other
things. And after that - UI dbusification will allow everyone to make
use of phone apps in his own scripts, which can bring UI consistense
 really easly.

I feel that *now* FR software is much better than every time before.
And it seems it still will be enhanced, just give it some time ;)

Hmm - maybe I need to try SHR when I get my phone back from it's buzz-fixing
journey. I must admit that only end-user experiences I've had with the FR
have been with OM 2008, QtE and QtEI, and the OM2009 TRs.

I would certainly agree that the software stack is making progress.
However, in the course of the year I've had an FR, I've seen it go from
completely unusable and unstable software (OM 2008) to relatively usable (as
a phone) software (QtE) to relatively stable and slightly usable (OM2009
TRs). To me, that seems like slow progress... In my opinion, it seems
like we're only now starting to approach the point we should have been at
when the FR was released.

If SHR is substantially improved compared to the OM2009 TRs, then perhaps I
need to withdraw my statement. That would in fact make me very happy!

 real
phone for end-users back then and being a happy Linux-User for 14 years, I
thought that I could live with some minor flaws...

My experience has been quite different - I've found the OM to be quite a
reliable phone with both the QtE distro, and with the recent OM2009 testing
releases. I did have to update the alsa config to get decent audio quality
(my FR is off for a buzz-fix now, so hopefully I'll have even better audio
when I get it back). Both QtE and the most recent OM2009 TR5 are quite
stable, and I get about 36-48 hours on standby, which is consistent with my
wife's iPhone.

QtE was perhaps a smoother, prettier user experience, but was lacking quite
a few applications - although I see that some people are working to allow X
based apps to run with QtE, which might have a very nice result.

The only real gap I find with OM2009 is that I haven't found a calendar app
that supports syncml, I haven't managed to get bluetooth working, and I've
had some problems with wifi. From that I've got quite a bit of useful
software - a browser that works reasonably well (woosh) albeit a little slow
on a gprs link, pretty good gps support, some fun games, a decent pdf

Re: Paroli SMS mockup image

2009-06-17 Thread Warren Baird
yeah, I think that trying to build a formal discussion thread is probably
too much. My thought was that basically any msgs from the same sender in a
certain period of time of the last message from that sender (configurable -
at least an hour, I'd think) would be grouped into the same conversation.
I forgot, but there should be a 'new message' button somewhere in the bubble
for each conversation, that sends a reply to the person the conversation is
with.

Don't know how it's best to handle messages sent to multiple recipients - I
guess they each spawn separate conversation threads?

illume doesn't start up. So for the moment I can't get at any of the other

A few comments:

I like the fact that you can see where the buttons are now... However, I'm
afraid that I don't particularly like showing the buttons with the four dots
at the corners - I think it's kind of an odd way to display them.

I'd still like to see a visual indication of 'slidyness' - when things can
be slide to the side.

As I think someone else mentioned, the scolling on the settings dialog is
broken - it always selects the thing you click on, even if you scroll the
list.

I'll have to do more testing before I can comment on the reliability.

Paroli SMS mockup image

2009-06-16 Thread Warren Baird
Hey all,

I've finally spent some time (when I should have been sleeping) and put
together a rather rough mockup showing a bit of how I'd like to see the
Paroli UI looking. I'm not sure how great a reception this'll get, since I
there seems to be a minimalist trend in the current Paroli design. But
frankly, I didn't buy a device with a nice 640x480 display to have a
monochrome UI!! ;-)

You can see my mockup at:
http://www.synergisticimages.ca/media/Paroli_mockup.png

Few comments on what I did:

  - fired up the gimp -- I definitely don't have time to figure out how to
do all this stuff in edje, I'm afraid...

  - stole liberally from the Tango icon set.

  - Added actual button-like images behind the buttons

  - adjusted the SMS display into a 'conversational' mode where all recent
messages to and from a specific person are grouped together.

  Comments and counter-suggestions definitely welcome!!!

Re: Launcher/Home Page (alpha) Release 0.22

2009-06-07 Thread Warren Baird
The new scroll bar is better - although I still think I prefer the drop-down
approach.

BTW - I've created my packages with some wallpaper images - they are on
opkg.com as http://www.opkg.org/package_230.html and
http://www.opkg.org/package_231.html (one with 'G' rated images, the other a
bit more PG). I install all of the images into /usr/share/wallpapers -
maybe you want to make that the default dir for wallpapers?

Also, you don't seem to save the directory that the user browses to when
picking wallpapers - if you want to try out several different images, it's
kinda annoying.

Do I need the buzz-fix?

2009-06-05 Thread Warren Baird
Hey all,

I'm getting a bit confused about whether I need to get the buzz-fix
operation done. Since I switched to
http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/attachment/ticket/2121/gsmhandset-a7.state a
few days ago I've generally been satisfiied with my audio quality - a couple
of people I've called have mentioned a small amount of buzz on occasion, but
that the audio quality was tolerable. With most other state files I've had
so much static on the line people on the other end could barely understand
me.

In http://n2.nabble.com/Debuzzing-tp2736682p3005844.html - Dr. N stated The
Buzz rework is only required if you have the Buzz problem. If your device
does not, there is no need to rework. My personal estimate is that 5% of
users have experienced it.

However, I've seen other statements like arne anka in
http://n2.nabble.com/Debuzzing-tp2736682p3007627.html state conclusion:
everyone having access to the buzz fix should take hold of it.

Is there some consensus on this? Should everyone get the buzz-fix? If
not - how do I tell if I should get the buzz fix.

Thanks,

Warren

2009-06-04 Thread Warren Baird
I've had better luck starting with
http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/attachment/ticket/2121/gsmhandset-a7.state -
it's one of several that I've seen identified as 'the one true statefile'...

If you still get buzz, then try dropping 'control.5' (Mono Playback Volume)
- to around 85 or 90. That might help - although you might find that
people have trouble hearing you.

I'm currently using the gsmhandset-a7.state unmodified and seem to get ok
results. I've had one report of intermittent buzz during a call, but it
wasn't super bad.

Makes sense - I'll try to come up with a few in the next couple of days. I
guess drop 'em in a directory like /usr/share/wallpapers? then you can
make that the default folder to browse in your prefs UI?

For the category picker - how much work would it be to maintain both modes
and let the user pick in the prefs?

And for editing the categories - I found the 'configure' button at the far
right - but I don't see how to add or remove categories from there - I was
able to assign apps to certain categories, but not edit the list of
categories.

25th. First of all let me second the comments made here congratulating
the Openmoko team on all that was accomplished. And let me add that
everything accomplished was only possible because of the amazing
 efforts of the community.

Bringing the Neo products to market, first the 1973 and then the
Freerunner, has been the most exceptional experience of our lives. I
can undeniably say that the most important thing we have learned over
these years is that the power of people bound by ideals, rather than
contracts, cannot be underestimated. These phones are your success.
From simple things like group sales to complex undertakings like
developing and maintaining entire distributions, you made this happen.
You always came through for us. As CEO, I have to determine the best
path forward for our phone business. And after long discussions with
my key people and Board, we've decided that the best path foreword is
to turn the future of the Freerunner over to the community.

We've always said that the talent and creativity of those outside the
company is superior to that inside the company. We have stuck to these
principles. We've have opened up more than any other phone, from any
other company, in the history of this industry. Every time we chose
openness over internal control, we have been rewarded.

Former Openmoko employees have already started redesigning the
Freerunner hardware (gta02-core) using only Free Software tools.
Werner Almesberger, working with many others, has made great progress.
Recently, we have released more information to accelerate their
efforts. In the coming weeks, all the design information will be
handed over to the community along with all of openmoko.org (Wiki,
GIT, Trac, Planet, ...). Openmoko Inc. then will act as the sponsor of
this effort. We will continue to fund all necessary server
infrastructure and support, in areas where corporate help is needed,
future open phone development. (Parts of this process will require
legal work - so I request your patience.)

I am extremely excited about the idea of an entirely community-built
open phone. Especially since, when the next design is complete, it
will have the benefits of everything uncovered since the Freerunner
shipped last July. It will be buzz free, glamo free, and free of the
recamping bug (#1024) - which I am happy to announce has been solved
this past week. We promise to support these efforts with additional
resources such as components to build prototypes of the new design. We
will help to empower you to build the open phone of our future.

After all this, there is one last thing that Openmoko the company can
do: we can enable the community to use the Openmoko brand and
trademark for these efforts. For us, the Openmoko brand is synonymous
with the people who built the products: Harald, Mickey, Werner,
Raster, all of my coworkers in our Taiwan office, Sureda, Tuxbrain,
Bearstech, and countless others. I personally want to give an extra
special thanks to Steve Mosher who has taught me so much about
marketing, writing, and well...life. Without his guidance, this all
would have only been an idea in my notebook.

I have asked Steve to lead an effort, over the next few weeks, to
gather input from the community on how best to implement this
transition. (He will follow up shortly on the community mailing list.)
As always we can expect some negative comments, that comes with the
territory. But we believe a community that owns everything of
importance, with regard to the Freerunner, will focus efforts and
energies on the future - not the past.

Sales of the current FreeRunner (A7), will continue as before. We have
plenty more in stock. Now that the phone is freed, and its future
entrusted to the hands of the community, Openmoko Inc. will start
another effort on an altogether different type of device. We've sized
our company to go do that task. Please wish us the very best of luck!
More details will follow in the coming months...

 Sincerely,

 Sean Moss-Pultz

Re: Om2009 testing release 4

2009-06-01 Thread Warren Baird
Hi Rask,

I'm afraid I have no idea which X server and touch screen driver were in
use. I was using OM2009 TR3 and hadn't modified the X server at all, if
that helps. The behaviour was that sometime when I rotated the device with
omrotatenew the touch pad response would be about 1.5cm to the left of where
I pressed. Usually when that happened I could just rotate it to another
position and back again, and it was usually fine.

As for your problem with landscape vs portrait positions and GUIs...
 well, that's

No problem as long as the X server and touch screen driver is working.
Which X server did it happen with (kdriver Xglamo, Xorg fbdev or Xorg

Re: Debuzzing

2009-06-01 Thread Warren Baird
Hmm.. You say that the buzz rework is only required by people who have the
buzz problem. How do we tell the difference between the buzz problem and
a badly tuned gsmhandset.state?

My situation is that when I talk to people on the FR I generally hear them
very clearly, but they get a lot of static on their side - is that the buzz
problem? Or is that something I can fix by tweaking the gsmhandset.state
file?

I'm using OM2009 TR4 btw - switching from the default alsa state file to
http://www.kurppa.fi/freerunner/config_files/gsmhandset.state seemed to help
the static, but it's still pretty bad...

If you find a way to DIY to gain these 25%, please share with us.

In fact overall time required for hand rework is roughly equal for
both buzz and #1024 fixes. If one has already dismounted the can

The key difference is the word if already dismounted the can.

(quite easy if one is careful) then changing that particular capacitor
is not a problem at all for a skilled person, it's SMT0805 size, big
enough comparing to 0402 R and it's very conveniently located.

This is for purely informational purposes for DIY-ers, i'm not
recommending any distributors to offer this rework, quite the
  opposite.

Thanks for this description which will help DIY-ers!

Our reworker just opens the two torx screws, unclips the front cover
and then does the Buzz-Rework under a microscope. Then, the front
cover is clipped back and torx screws are replaced. This keeps rework
cost low even in a high-wage country like Germany (which is still more
than the 3 EUR we formally charge - Openmoko is sponsoring the rework).

For opening the GSM shield you have to dismantle the whole PCB from
the Freerunner plastics and then open the can. Doing the reverse
direction means to put the power and aux buttons in place, make sure
that the vibramotor and speaker give contact etc. and everything
snaps back. This all sums to approx. 4 times as many minutes. That is
the time that adds up in our calculation. So if we find a way to apply
it without opening the can and dismantling the PCB, it will be the
 same speed.

So it is the simplicity of the buzz-rework that made us start this
adventure but more complex reworks are beyond our limits...

Aother note to all who read this: the Buzz rework is only required if
you have the Buzz problem. If your device does not, there is no need
to rework. My personal estimate is that 5% of users have experienced
 it.

And if you don't own a Freerunner yet, you don't necessarily have to
wait for A7 devices. So purchasing an A6 is still a good bet.

I tried it on OM2009 TR4, and it worked ok - Although I found that all of my
apps ended up in the 'uncategorized' category... Is there a special process
I have to go through to add them to a category?

I also didn't see the links for the contacts, dialer, etc. that are shown on
the screen shot? Is that just a matter of configuring a 'home' category?

I definitely like the look. is it possible to do transparent icons
though? On the Illume launcher, the icons are drawn transparently, but it
looks like in launch they are drawn on a white box...

Regarding epdfview you should find a package on www.opkg.org with the
finger-scroll feature added. With that feature you can even hide the toolbar

Hi Miguel,

it's not super intuitive, but it is documented in the 'how do I get to
settings' and 'how do I get Illlume' sections of
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Paroli#FAQ - basically on the main page hold
the option button down for a few seconds to bring up the settings dialog,
and then under display hit 'profile' once to bring up the illume top-bar.

Then you can launch any applications you'd like from the illume panel.

Personally, I think it's a bit odd to have one launcher for all of your
other apps, and then the paroli main page as a 'launcher' for the
phone/sms/contacts page, but it sounds like people are working on fixing
that.

  only phone.

Here are my issues, in order of importance:

  1) Horrible audio distortion during calls. People tell me that I
sound like I'm being played back over a blown-out speaker. I tried
calling +1800GOOG411 (google's speech recognition phone directory) and
it was unable to understand me. I bet this is something tweakable
with the ALSA settings, but I'm surprised that Om2009t4 gets the
default wrong when SHR-testing works fine. I don't know if it's
relevant but I have an A6 model of the Freerunner.

  1) I'm experiencing the same (according to the people I call). I however
did not experience this with the previous images (I'll try to flash
testing 3 back to see if the problem remains or is gone).

I went back to the gsmhandset.state which worked for me (so reverted to
what was changed in http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/changeset/4968). The
contacts I called so far said they could understand me way better, I was
 no longer breaking up.

Hmm. I just tried doing the setup on my FR's internal memory (rather than
the SD card), using the suggested fso-image-nox-om-gta02.jffs2 image as a
starting point.

The install worked, but after I successfully installed QT and rebooted, the
usb networking refused to come up. I had to do a 'ifconfig usb0 up' and
'ifconfig usb0 192.168.0.202' from the terminal before I could log into
it. Any ideas what might cause that and what I could do to fix it? I've
tried rebooting again, and it didn't seem to make any difference...

Re: Community-driven redesign / new theme for Paroli

2009-05-20 Thread Warren Baird
I'm interested - however, I think you might want to set a bit more direction
in terms of where you want to go with it. The problem is that UI's are
very subjective. I saw at least one person say that the current paroli UI
in OM2009 is good, whereas I think it's at best kinda boring...

and I'd suggest you might want to go a bit further than just a 'theme'.
I'd like to see some serious thought put into the whole user experience -
how does the user make a call, send an SMS, start an app, etc.

Risto - can you say a little bit about how *you* would like things to look
and work? Is there an existing phone or PDA UI that you think we could
borrow good ideas from?

I saw some sliding things in Paroli I got the idea of menu that'd be

I guess this is a bit beyond current Paroli. Just an idea.

you think makes Android not a 'free' option on the OM, and what part of the

I certainly agree that Android running on a locked phone with all the

But I must say that I don't see why the Koolu implementation of Android

That smells like 'free' to me.

I don't see how the fact that people can create 'non-free' android distros

Re: [Om2009] testing Release 3

2009-05-13 Thread Warren Baird
Hi all,

I thought I'd share my experiences so far with the testing release. I've
been using QT Extended 4.4.3 as my primary phone for more than 6 months now,
but I decided to try putting the OM2009 TR3 build on my SD card to give it a
shot.

I've only done minimal testing so far - I've been able to successfully make
and receive a phone call, and the first sms I sent work, however the second
one seemed to hang while saying 'sending' for quite a while. I was very
happy to see that receiving a phone call while suspended woke up about as
quickly as QtE 4.4.3, so I was able to easily answer the call - unlike my
experience with OM 2008.

However, I'd have to say that coming from QT Extended, the paroli user
experience requires a *lot* of work - enough that my first thought was that
my install didn't work.

I saw a black screen with white text showing the time and date at the top,
and 4 lines with I/O (or 1/0 - I can't tell for sure), People, Tele
and Msgs on it. On each of the following pages there's no real
indication what to do. The first thing I did was click on the I/O page,
and saw a blank page with an edit button at the top that seemed to do
nothing. Then I tried to figure out how to get back to the main page...
Took me a lot of random clicking to figure out that clicking on the date at
the top takes you back to the home page.

The Tele page is a little more intuitive, but again, it wasn't obvious to me
that the text 'Call' near the top was an actual button.

I found the msgs page very confusing. I did figure out fairly quickly that
'+' tries to send a new message - and I was able to send a message and get a
reply.I do actually like the IM like display showing the messages back
and forth. However, I couldn't really figure out what to do to send a new
message to the existing conversation. I got into a mode where it seemed to
be letting me edit the sms message I had just recieved, but couldn't figure
out how to just reply.

It seems like OM2009 has addressed the technical problems that encouraged me
to switch to QtE originally - but I must admit that unless the user
experience is *substantially* improved, I doubt I'll be switching off QtE.

Is there work ongoing in terms of producing a better user experience for
OM2009? I'd love to contribute. I don't have piles of spare time, but
I've done a bunch of python coding, am pretty good with the gimp, and worked
with a Ph.D in user experience for long enough to have half a clue about
user interface design.

  starting with + like +790934534...
  - read and create contacts both in English and Russian from both sim
  card and internal db
  - send and receive sms both in English and Russian

This should be fixed in the unstable feed. To get it you will need to
 install
Om2009 and the bring that package in from unstable or wait for TR4

  - lock and unlock screen by pressing aux button

 AUX button has other uses

I guess it's pretty common expectations and it sometimes work somehow

So my question is - are above mentioned features available on om2009 TR3

 Not yet

Is there are some packages I need to install to achieve it or some
  configuration tweaks needed?

If so - how to migrate contacts db and sms message archive from
  om2008.12 to om2009?

As far as I understood it's recommended to flash om2009.
Is it possible to use sd instead? If so - where can I find instructions
on how to do it with om2009 TR3?

Yes running on an SD card is no problem, and is the method I would
 recommend
if you just want to test it, and is the same as any other distro in that
regard. The instructions vary depend on what bootloader so check the wiki.

Going a bit further, is there plan to start supporting normal upgrade

Upgrades should start working before we get to release but there are a
 couple
of minor bugs that need working out first. If those aren't resloved before
release I will try to provide an upgrade script that will do the right
 thing
 were opkg can't

There are also certain features lacking in om2008.12 which I'm really
looking forward to see in om2009 in addition to basics mentioned above:
  - correctly receive call\sms in suspend mode e. g. wake up and work

Part of that with any distro is to make sure you have the modem flashed to
 moko11

  - alarm clock working in suspend mode
  - wi-fi with wpa2 working out-of-the-box
  - some media player supporting ogg and mp3

 It is unlikely that

true, even more because there's no visual feedback for selection (I

Now just some buttons to quickly go from letters to ciphers and to the
sentence-characters (.,?, etc...). Instead of always needing to
slide up and down ... There's place for at least 3 extra signs on the

I understand the concern, but when you type in a sentence (or multiple
sentences) and you need punctuation characters, you're gonna need a
lot of sliding ... so I would bring the most used keyboards under 3
buttons as well. I'll try it, and if it clutters too much, I'll remove
it again. I can always leave the code in, and just disable it in the
 layout.conf file ...
For the buttons, any suggestions? I can take any html code ... see
 http://cityofstrife.net/hexcodes.html. For uppercase/lowercase, I'll
use an fat arrow up/down (x21E7 and x21E9), but what to use for
letter symbol, special char symbol and cipher symbol?
In the letters keyboards, I'll add: up/down, special char, ciphers
In the special char keyboard, I'll add: letters (lowercase), ciphers
In the ciphers keyboard, I'll add: letters (lowercase), special chars

Tip: make a fingertip stylus from a business card

2009-02-26 Thread Warren Baird
I figured out this trick quite a few years back to use on a palm 3 - but I
just tested it out and it works quite well on an FR, so I thought I'd share
it.

Take a standard sized business card (ideally of relatively thin card stock)
- hold it in 'portrait' position. Fold the bottom right corner up to the
left side of the card, and then fold and tear-off the top portion of the
card. The idea is to make the largest square possible with the card.

Once you have the square, follow the standard origami instructions for a
paper cup - I followed :
http://www.tinyshiny.com/HowToProjects/OrigamiCup.php - but the same basic
design is all over the place. Card stock isn't as forgiving to fold as
paper, so you'll have to be careful making your folds. With a thick card
stock it might not be doable.

place the cup over your finger tip and use one of the two base corners of
the cup as the tip of a stylus.

Or make two of them and put them on each thumb to make thumb typing much
easier.

Hope this is useful to someone.

Would this impact resume from suspend on an incoming phone call? The

The image is not yet 100% working, but I?m able to use my FR as a reliable
mobile phone with a decent running time and a fun hacking device at the
 same time.
I'll post my patches (mostly changes to Qt to adapt for the new kernel)
somewhere during the next days , and once I have an image that I'm happy
with I'll make it available for download.

Safe to move off QtE yet?

2009-02-18 Thread Warren Baird
Hey all,

I've been using my FR as my daily phone since installing QtE 4.4.2 on it
some months back.QtE addressed the biggest problem I had with OM2008.9
at the time - I could reliably answer calls after suspend.

When I was using OM2008.9 I regularly missed calls because the phone would
take so long to unsuspend that I'd miss the call - and if that didn't
happen, I'd accidentally hang up because I didn't think it'd registered my
click on the 'answer' button.

I'm reasonably satisfied with my FR/QtE 4.4.2 solution as a phone - but I'd
love to be able to play with some of the more interesting software being
developed for the FR.

So the question is - are there any other distro's out there that will give
me the reliable call answering that QtE gives me? Are the unsuspend
problems addressed in 2008.12 with Kustomizer (or with other tweaks?) - or
is SHR a safe bet?

Thanks,

Warren

I'm definitely feeling like a broken record now - but I have to disagree
with you - QtExtended 4.4.2 is a stable OS with basic phone functionality.
The only major annoyance I have with the basic phone functionality is that
you get some duplicate messages in the SMS inbox - I use google calendar
with SMS notifications for my calendar solution, and I have to empty my
inbox maybe once every week or two.

I do tend to prophlactically reboot the phone every few days, but I've been
using QtExtended 4.4.2 as my day to day phone basically since it came out,
and I haven't missed calls, or not been able to make calls because of it. I
finally gave up on carrying around my emergency backup phone - which I had
to resort to regularly when I was using FDOM or OM.

I must admit that I'm looking forward to being able to use the smart-phone
features of the FR, so I agree it'd be great if Android or SHR or someone
else was able to provide the phone stablity of QtE, plus everything else...

Sorry if I'm repeating myself here - but try QTExtended 4.4.2 - it's not
perfect, and I do miss having all of the funky X based software from the
OM2008 based stacks, but as a basic phone, it works quite well, and I get
36-48 hour battery life...

I agree Android looks like it has a lot of promise - but if you want a
functioning phone today - I'd suggest trying out QtExtended 4.4.2 - it
doesn't give you much more than basic phone functionality, but I've been
using it as my day-to-day phone for a month now, and am generally pretty
happy with it...
