Re: [2008.9] Wifi very unreliable
Im also inclined to think its a hardware/driver problem and have nothing to do with wpa_supplicant or any other highlevel stuff. I fully understand if higher stuff is left to the community but i did expect the kernel and low level stuff to work a bit better than now when i bought the phone. It could ofcourse be just some phones thats broken and most works well because of some faulty batch. Does anyone know if work is happening on the kernel side of wifi or is it an orphan right now needing more people? //danielh 2008/9/30 [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi all. Now that you mention this, I think the problem is Hardware based. I've bought an Asus Eee 901 :D, and now I have a means of comparison in terms of WiFi reception. My conclusion is that the Neo FR's wifi sucks. Example1: - my home AP has WPA; sitting 2 meters away from it, the FR show 50% signal strength. Okay, you can say that's too close and they are shouting at each other, causing signal corruption. Very well, I take it 10 meters away, behind a couple of normal walls. The signal strength drops all the way, right down to 5%, which is pretty unusable. The Eee901 has 100% signal strength in the vicinity of the AP, and behind those walls shows 30%. Example2: - at work, the Eee901 picks up 4 weak networks, the strongest one at 35% strength and joins (no security) without problems. The FR picks up only the stronger one at 8%, and it cannot join it. This has convinced me that either the wifi on the FR has serious hardware problems, or the software is misguiding it. Anyway, it needs serious attention. Has anyone filed bugs on this wifi problem? Vasco. Re: Concept arts. Interface - how I would like it to see.
I think this concept looks very good and it shows you have thought about it thoroughly. Starting from top to bottom, The topmost area with signal levels and should be there all the time but as small as possible because they steal screen estate. The running apps area is the best way i can imagine to show what apps are running and quickly and painlessly switch between them. Its pure genius and i cant really think of a better way to do it. Having the applications menu sliding in from the left should work pretty well and allows it to use almost all of the screen to show applications. I think the applications menu should split one or two times in a tree structure to allow for big icons on phones with many applications installed. That way you can easily start them without a stylus. Perhaps one should put an icon for closing currently running application here too. Speed dial is nice and the big icons makes using phone functions without a pen easy. Overall i would really love a phone that looked like this. The biggest gripe i have with mobiles right now is an easy way to see what applications are running, switching between them and closing a running application. //danielh 2008/9/24 wp [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Dear Community, As first, I want to say thank you for all your great job, by which I can do what I do now. Expanding capabilities with gestures is nice and can add usability to a device. Using them as the default way of accomplish things makes the device very hard to use for a beginner. Having the only way of opening a menu or something only possible if you already know exactly what to do is a killer for usability. I think the main goal should be that anyone can pick a device up and use it without prior knowledge. 2008/9/24 DJDAS [EMAIL PROTECTED]: wp wrote: What is your opinion? Re: (OM2008.8-update) (audio/GSM) alsamixer names
Hi, If someone could just write up their knowledge about the various mixer items in alsa i think that would help a lot. I have been fiddling with alsa for days on end but its a real maze. For example it would speed up development of better defaults if people would post their working state files. //danielh 2008/9/16 Vasco Névoa [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi. Some callers have been complaining my GSM microphone level is low, so I've been reading the threads about echo cancellation and alsa state files, but every time I walk into alsamixer I get lost. I'd like to suggest different names for the Alsa controls, because quite frankly I cannot relate to the ones I see in alsamixer. But first I'd like to ask you guys if you feel the same need as me. Do you feel comfortable with the present alsa channel names, or would you like them to be clearer? I think that these names are confusing and sometimes even misleading. They should be closer to the user... like for example, from (1) we know that the Voice interface is connected to the bluetooth interface; why not call it bluetooth?? The same goes for PCM; I know everybody knows that PCM means Pulse Code Modulated and that can only come from the CPU, but can't we make life easier on ourselves and call it CPU or SoC or System or something more obvious that says this is Linux's sound card? The Mic1 and Mic2 could be called HeadMic and BuiltInMic or something. This would make it clearer for everyone messing with these settings, and so would help accelerate the troubleshooting of this complex system. As to the more obscure controls, like the MUXers and the intermediate routing volume levels, I'd like them to be less distracting and more accurate; they are used for several things, so they should not be named for external objects; how about calling them their wolfson datasheet names, like LMSEL?... this way we wouldn't need to constantly try to decode the meaning of each of these things, we'd just open up the picture (1) and everybody would know precisely what is being talked about... Basically, I'm trying to propose a naming scheme that separates high-level stuff (like plain Headphones and Microphone volume) from low-level stuff (like routing in the mixers). This would allow us newbies to play in alsamixer without fear of breaking some obscure routing that may later come back to bite us in the ear. Does anyone know where the alsa channel names are defined (which file)? Oh, and I think I see a bug: the channel names Headphone and Speaker are exchanged, as far as I can see. Phone call volume is controlled via Speaker and SoC music play is controlled via Headphone; Isn't this supposed to be the other way around? Please confirm/deny.
