Re: Exact release date of GTA01Bv4?

2007-10-23 Thread Eric Johnson
It seems some community responsibility is in order. Being an open source
project, it's important that positive and respectful lines of communication
remain open. Those members who are "close to the metal", so to speak, have
an obligation to send proper communications out via the lists (or
otherwise). Those members who are highly interested in project events and
status have an obligation to remain as educated as possible and have a
responsibility to fix any inconsistencies on the Wiki they find. By its
very nature, a Wiki is only as good as the community supporting it. As
well, the Wiki is, in fact, versioned, so rolling erroneous entries back is
trivial.

I thought the idea of having the antenna at the bottom was so that the
signal isn't attenuated by your head so much during a call.
[At least someone told me that was a good thing on the RAZRs and it
sounded convincing]

AFAIK, when you buy a SIM card, you are given a 4-digit PIN number,
which is the only means of authentication between the end-user and the
GSM part of the phone. So, we have to live with that.

This is not the case. I personally have a SIM card with *no* PIN on it.
I could set a PIN on it if I chose to, but for that card I choose not to.

Setting the PIN is a choice of the user. It does not have to be set.

So any login scheme cannot assume that the SIM card has a PIN on first boot.

Actually, there is always a PIN on the SIM it's just that in your case
it has been disabled -- this is standard for some operators. To
re-enable it you need to know the PIN or the PUK.
Nonetheless, your point is correct that one cannot assume the PIN is
activated on first boot.

Can you tell me the numbers on the chip side of the SIM?
Not the 20 digit ICCID but the 5 digit SKU followed by a letter and then
the 4 digit Vendor and Version number underneath it.

For example G&D cards say
   71234 D
   2202

I can make calls using the cingular 3G sim card. I dont know much
about SIM cards/networks but it says 3G on it and its by cingular. Is
there a way to confirm that its 3G ?

Re: US: T-Mobile plans

2007-07-31 Thread Eric Johnson
Are you sure this wasn't a certificate issue on your jar file. I had no
trouble downloading J2ME apps last year using T-Mobile US and my own web
site. For some of the handsets you needed to hack the root certificate
in the phone or in the Sprint case download a developer certificate to
the phone.

I can't see how the SIM would have any effect on this. In principle, it
can store the root certificate but in my experience the handset
developers chose not to implement that part of the standards.

I guess I'll find out when I get my own Neo.

While I’ve not done so in the last few months, I have done a lot of

on some aspects of web access. For the last couple of years (unless
they’ve changed very recently) while they have allowed browsing of
most internet sites, they have not allowed JAR files to be downloaded
from non-approved sites. This could be gotten around with special SIMs
if you have a developer relationship with T-Mobile. There might be
fewer restrictions on the “Mobile Internet” vs. “Mobile Web”.

Sorry, I was doing it from memory and the first digit of the four seems
to be the SIM vendor so I shouldn't have said beginning with a 2.

The 71324 is the SKU for the AT&T latest UICC.
The 4021 is the Vendor and Version number.
Based at looking at some cards the vendor numbers are
   2 - G&D
   3 - Gemalto
   4 - Oberthur

I have access to a tool monitoring the communication between the SIM and
the handset so I will be able to investigate this later.
Unfortunately, they haven't charged my credit card yet so at best I will
not have a device for a couple of weeks and I only have access to G&D
and Gemalto UICCs.

Hopefully someone else can help you in the meantime.

It'll be a bit of a blow if the phone won't work with the largest US GSM
operators SIM cards!

Well the AT&T 3G cards are definitely have both a SIM and USIM
application on them and AT&T do a lot of device testing before approving
the cards so it really should work.

Can you say what the Vendor and Version Number of the UICC is?
This is the 4 digit number beginning with a 2 under the "3g fireball" on

Since the Calypso chipset is 2G a "3G SIM" will only work if it contains
both the USIM and SIM applications.
I would expect that this is the case for most operators that have both
2G and 3G networks.
It is less likely that operators such as 3 would put a SIM application
on their cards - at least I can't think why they would - since this
would only be used by a 2G handset which couldn't use their network.
