Re: Fourth Request: What is the warranty for the FreeRunner?

2008-08-27 Thread Francesco Cat
Warranty depends only from the distributor.

Phone buyed from the openmoko store only have the DOA warranty (14 days).

Please if you want to know more things search the mailing list (EG:
what DOA means).

It was never meant to be an IPhone killer. It was designed for beeing
the first open phone.
What I wanted to say: since this is an HW revision, not a brand new
phone, the components regarding 3G and USB 2.0 will not be present in
the GTA03. The glamo chip will be removed since it was a bad design
(personally I would like to keep it, but people at OM think it is
better to remove it, so it will be removed).
We should get a camera and EDGE, but no more details are given.

If you want 3G, 3D accelleration, more power, 4Mio pixel camera and so
on, just wait for the GTA04, and hope that samsung will open their
6410 SoC

Re: will GTA03 be ready for holiday season?

2008-08-27 Thread Francesco Cat
It seems that the first 25 GTA03 Evaluation Boards have already
arrived to wolfgang on August the 11th [1], so the phone *might*
arrive in shops in december, I think no one knows.

BTW: It is unsure what will be in (what kind of camera, what GSM chip,
and so on), but what won't be there is quite sure:

-No Glamo
-No 3G
-No USB 2.0

It is something A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and I say I would love to see it on a GTA04 ;)

Re: band issue

2008-07-08 Thread Francesco Cat
in Pakistan the 900/1800 freq are used so they should be fine, if you
get the 900/1800/1900 vers. It is the same vers shipped in Europe.
It is important because if you do get the 850/1800/1900 version some
operators will not work at all.

Now what we do need is just a USB 2.0 port :/ Otherwise the entire

Re: Battery life & case design

2008-07-01 Thread Francesco Cat
FR only accepts 100 or 500 mA current I think. So yes, it will be
"powered" by it in the sense that the FR battery will have a longer
life; but it should not be enought i think because the FR seems to
need more than 100 mA and I don't think it will accept something like
250mA. It's 500 or 100.

BTW: 6.58 Volts??? Strange... It should provide 5Volts to simulate a USB...

Actually they should be able to create Ad-Hoc networks. this means 2
FR will be able to connect each other. The Access Point functionality
would have been usefull only when connecting 3 or more FR toghether.
If you need to connect more than 2 FRs one way *might* be bridging
wifi, bluetooth and USB connections, creating some kind of "chain".
Not very clear if you need to connect 10 or more FRs :)

it is exactly what we need :) we need to make people understand the
FreeRunner is unique, and can do things never imagined before!
If I was planning an advertisement campaign, one of the facts I would
focus is that the FreeRunner can be a USB host: this means using USB
drives (including cameras, mp3 readers, also external hard disks!).
No phone nor smartphone can do such a thing...
FreeRunner is special, it will not just "send" SMS, he will manipulate
SMS so you spend less money. Tell me what device is build for the user
spending less money on something :)

There is also a nice feature that could be used with SMS: imagine that
the SMS is automatically shortened (eg by abbreviating words and stuff

there should be libraries that could fit the "dictionary" needed for

Very fast and simple questions:

-the issue with slow bus for Glamo is gonna be resolved by changing
the bus or eliminating the Glamo?
-will usb still be 1.1?
-will the price be different? If it is gonna change, some kind of
estimation would be nice.

Re: Slashdot post but no web store?

2008-06-26 Thread Francesco Cat
Waiting for a review from a user ;) I'm a bit undecided about
buying... I was wandering if buying as soon as I'm sure it works well
or get it as soon as possible :P
Some discussion on ML has scared me a bit :(

Re: FR with embedded projector and LASER keyboard

2008-06-26 Thread Francesco Cat
?? Is this the first "fork" of an open hardware project???

if it is a fork, what about implementing laser keyboard and projector
in the next GTA? :P

Re: Slashdot post but no web store?

2008-06-26 Thread Francesco Cat
me too... I would like to try it out :P

BTW: can I be sure that I will be able to make a phone call without
problems or is it still under development? It was not so clear to me
due to high confusion made about this topic in the mailing list...

Will an AM/FM radio will be implemented in future versions of the GTA?
A radio should not be so much hardware/software expensive.

FR using OpenStreetMaps

2008-06-24 Thread Francesco Cat
What will be the best way to take advantage of Open Street Maps?
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Main_Page

A Free phone can't be depending of closed-source data for maps (google
or others) ;) So we must be able to use OSM! (as well as contributing
the project!)

Re: GPS

2008-06-23 Thread Francesco Cat
Ok I really missed what I wanted to say: One of my friends told me
some phones have positioning sistems that are quite unaccurate: they
should be based on cells but have no GPS. He also told me it was "AGPS
that uses only GSM to get information about position". Next time I
will document better instead of just listen to friends :P
Sorry for the big mistake

GPS

2008-06-23 Thread Francesco Cat
the FreeRunner will have a true GPS integrated, not only an AGPS
system, wouldn't it?

Because I was given the address of this flyer:
http://www.pulster.de/info/pdas/openmoko/freerunner-flyer.pdf
and I hope it is just out-dated

Input Methods

2008-06-21 Thread Francesco Cat
what about implementing Dasher as an alternative input method? I am
using it in this moment to write this email and it's really powerful.
According to their site, experienced people do rach the speed of
twenty words in a minute using an eyetracker! The other important
thing is that it's utf compatible and supports lots of languages.
Plus, it is open source software and has a nice learning curve. Give
it a chance!ù
