Thanks for your feedback - I've (finally) installed SHR testing now.
Looks quite nice, and was easy to reflash :).
I've only tested it for half a day (and managed to crash/hardlock the
thing several times already :/, but hey, maybe the best Freerunner
software I've seen wrt look and feel).

I managed to get Mofi working to connect to my wlan (WPA-PSK+AES).
But, after suspend/resume, I'm not sure however how to get online
again (over wlan). Maybe a know issue? (It seems I'm not able to
enable wlan again in the settings)

As for mplayer - are there any known to work mplayer frontends (or any
other *player frontends) for SHR? I managed to get pythm work, but am
not sure how to make it load files over the LAN.

As a sidenote; I am not able to boot the device when USB is connected.
Is this a know "bug"? Are there any known workarounds?

Freerunner as a wireless streamplayer?

2009-04-19 Thread MartinG
My Freerunner has just been collecting dust for the last few months,
and after reading a bit regarding the buzz/echo hardware/software
problems, I sort of gave up the device.

BUT, there has been enough complaining and moaning already, so I
thought I'd try to find out what use I can make of the device *today*.

In my house I've got a server that holds all my music (mainly ogg, and
some mp3), I've got a MythTV backend (providing an upnp service I
believe), I've got a wireless network (WPA2), and some radios/stereo
players in various rooms. Technically, the Freerunner is capable of
connecting to an upnp server of the wlan, right? And to decode ogg,
and send (stereo) output throught the jack, right? (if not ogg, I
guess I could do on-the-fly recoding of ogg on the server)

I've briefly search the list and the wiki and found this:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Applications
but I didn't find out if such an app really exists.

Thing is, I have not yet managed to get a system up an running and
connected to my wifi (I did have an early version of Qt sporadically
connected, but got too frustrated by the interface). To be honest, I'm
a bit lost regarding what distros currently exist and what distros are
working.

I tried the QT Extended Improved, but I guess I failed at following
the somewhat long list of manual tweaking, so my FR doesn't currently
boot (don't get me wrong, I highly appreciate the work done by the
QtEI team).

So what I ask is:
Is it possible to download an image, simply reflash the phone, connect
to my wlan, and opkg/ipkg install a player that is able play streams
from my local server?
(Is it possible to do *now*, or do I have to wait for teamA to finish
featureX and make them talk to teamB, etc. Please be honest, I've been
too optimistic for too long, and simply would like to know what are
the possibilities as of today)

best regards,
MartinG

I haven't touched any files in /etc/ at all -- for me the APN input
field was just "working". But I haven't managed to get online yet, as
it seems the pppd stuff isn't fully configured.

I'll let you know if I make any progress.

Oh, okay, so it is a bit more complicated then.

Yes: Setup, Internet, Options, New, GPRS, Account name, APN.
I need to investigate more myself.

Another thing:
I need to be sure that my phone is totally silent: In fact, I hate
gadgets that make any sounds. So I have muted sound in the General
profile. But when I get a reminder, I would appreciate to have the
phone vibrating. In the Calendar, I can choose if the alarm should be
none/silent/audible, but "audible" is for me not a good choice, since
I want whatever profile I am using to decide if an alarm results in
something audible and/or vibration.

What I am suggesting, is to change the word "audible" to "active" (or
something similar), and make sure the settings in the profile is
obeyed when an alarm kicks in.

Also, really make sure that the phone is silent when told to. For
example, make sure the low battery warning does not make any sound,
it's so freakin' embarrassing at the library...

[QtExtended] Snapshots? Yes, please!

2008-10-08 Thread MartinG
Hi all, just wanted to share my experience with QT Extended:

1) First off - I put [QtExtended] in the subject - hope this is okay.
I have found it extremely convenient when others have done it, as it
makes it easy to (quick)filter on subject. I would encourage other qt
users to do the same.

2) I have tested uImage-gta02-g291a9d50_mwester-stable.bin (from
http://moko.mwester.net/dl.html#kernels)
 and qtextended-4.4.1-gta02-rootfs-release-10022309.jffs2 (from
http://qtextended.org/modules/mydownloads/)

I am quite impressed!

3) I can confirm most of the bugs already mentioned here earlier. Are
we supposed to file bugreports here?:
http://trolltech.com/developer/task-tracker
I couldn't find any section for QT Extended, nor for Neo/Freerunner.

4) Networking: The menu in Settings/Internet is confusing:
Are we supposed to tap to select *and* tap to activate/deactivate?
There is no feedback on activation/deactivation - it takes several
seconds for "pending" to appear. If it fails, sometimes nothing is
shown. Is it possible to select without activating/deactivating?

Would it be possible to make the icons bigger, and thus making it
easier to hit the right entry?
And also making an activate/deactivate button next to the entry to
make it more intuitive?

The first time I tried to add my local wlan network, I really didn't
understand the logic in the settings: First add wlan, then add
networks.
To add new networks, I need to a) select wlan, b) Options->wlan
detection, c) wait for autoscan to end, d) options-> add new
networks..., e) select new network.
Okay, it works, but is it the best way? Am I doing anything wrong here?

5) I know I can read the log by "logread". Is there an option to make
it behave like "tail -f /var/log/messages"? (btw, where is the log
stored?)
("logread -h" isn't very helpful)
Gees - "logread -f" does the trick! Useful when debugging ppp :)

6) As mentioned in the subject: If there were binary snapshots
available, I would surely use them. I think Lorn Potter mentioned here
on the list that they were waiting for an "OK" from above, hope it
happens soon...

Main issues:
7) volume/mic not properly adjusted when making a call: other part
can't hear me, and I get too much noise to call it okay.
I tried the gsmhandset.state provided by Franky (attachment to "Re:
one day usage of qtextended"), but it didn't really solve the problem
for me. Manually tweaking mic1/2 (and others) in 'alsamixer' during a
call (usb, ssh) convinced me that it really can be done, but it is
really hard to find the correct ratios.

8) Wireless connection seems unstable. I have had package loss
reported by 'ping'.

9) Email: I was not able to retrieve the folder structure of my IMAP
account. I get socket error, and sometimes that the other end
disconnected. I guess this is related to 8). Once I managed to get
parts of the structure before it failed.

10) Keyboard: As mentioned before by others, switching keyboards in
PredictiveKeyboard is not always working - I have to struggle for
quite some time to make it work. Thus, I have never managed to write a
single sms using my fingers.

11) How do I create a dictionary for my language (Norwegian)? I have
seen that Trolltech provides other languages, but I guess the open
source nature of Qt Extended should make it possible for me to compile
this myself? Can we convert stuff from eg. hunspell in some way?
Really - for non-english users, especially here in Europe, we cannot
use this as a regular phone without being able to write sms in our
national language. Not meant as a rant, just an observation. I'd be
happy to help out making other dictionaries!

12) Great to see ppp support in the lates mwester kernel
(uImage-gta02-g291a9d50_mwester-stable.bin)! Too bad I didn't manage
to get it working. Anyone had any luck? Do I really have to tweak all
those /etc/* files?

Minor:

13) Web browser: Not much feedback provided when entering a URL. Also
- PredictiveKeyboard doesn't make much sense when writing urls, as it
forces the use of a dictionary. Also, it would be great to have a "Go"
button next to the location bar, to make it easier to "press enter".
It is possible to add active pages to the "speed dial", but there is
no way to quickly select a "bookmark" from within the browser. Guess
this will come later?

14) When using widescreen mode, it seems that scrolling is severely
slowed down, and one can see some tearing when eg. scrolling the
Applications screen. Are there some buffer sizes that should be
changed?

15) Terminal: The "Back" button doesn't seem to work. Choosing
Options/Exit does the trick, but gives an error: "Application
terminated: Terminal was terminated due to application error."

16) Any timeframe on a working AGPS mapping software with
autodownloadable maps?

I think this is a important point that should be given some thought
before everyone starts hacking. Would it make sense to use opensync
[1] as a middle layer between the frontend app and the backend store
-- with one plugin on each side?
Or are the akonadi libraries light weight enough? Other solutions?

As a "poweruser" I tend to want to try all and every software
available to find out what fits my needs, but to set up everything
from scratch each time I change my mind would be, well, boring.
Programming a flexible data store on the other hand, would be rather
fun (what do I know - I have never really tried (yet))

Just some free thinkin' from my side...

MartinG

Same goes for the Opera browser [1] - the menu comes after the rest of
the text, down to the right. I think it has been like this for a long
time, and for many versions of opera (9.x). I now use 9.50 Beta 2, and

I still get this error (see below). I did try to wipe my whole build
directory and started over, but got the same error again (three
times). Basically what I did was:

$ rm -rf ~/moko/*
$ cd ~/moko/
$ wget http://www.rwhitby.net/files/openmoko/Makefile
$ nice make setup
$ unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH; nice make update-makefile && nice make setup
update openmoko-devel-image

I also tried a "make clean" and started over, but got the same error.

Is there any file that I can fix manually. Hm, just notice that the
Makefile I got was from March 27. So, should
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/MokoMakefile maybe be updated? ( wget
http://svn.projects.openmoko.org/svnroot/mokomakefile/trunk/Makefile
also gives a file from March 27.)

Where is the correct MokoMakefile?

For contacts, calendar, todos, etc. there is a project called opensync
which is very promising. I used it while it was named multisync, but
they decided to rewrite the whole thing from scratch to make it easier
to develop. It is pluginbased now. I think KDE 4 will support opensync
through kitchensync/akonadi. It is still in beta, but I think a new
release will be out soon.

"OpenSync is a synchronization framework that is platform and
distribution independent."

www.opensync.org

For the geodata I think the opensync developers are thinking of some
sort of generel file synchronization as well, maybe using rsync as a
plugin to opensync, but I'm not sure about that.

Clearly, a device running openmoko must be the simplest device
thinkable to develop a synchronization tool for, as one can tune bits
on both sides. (I'm not saying it will be trivial though...)

Microsoft Shift technology (precision pointing without stylus)

2007-05-18 Thread MartinG

Hi list, just want to mention the "Shift" technology that I noticed
today - here's the conclusion in the report [1]:

Shift enables the operation of a pen-based device, such as a
PDA or UMPC, with fingers. Our experimental results
show that Shift's conditional escalation overcomes occlu-
sion problems and allows users to select small targets relia-

Not sure if this stuff is patented, but I guess it could be
implemented on the OpenMoko (I guess develepment specific discussions
should be posted to the -devel list ;))

Idea: Use headphone output as a remote control (infrared: control TV, stereo, etc)

2007-01-19 Thread MartinG

This might have been suggested before, if so - ignore it ;)

The idea is simply to use the (stereo) mini jack sound output of the
Neo to control two infrared leds, in order to control whatever device
that can be controlled by a remote control. Why two leds and stereo? I
guess this is required in order to reach the high frequency
conventional remote controls use.
Read more here:

Does anyone know if this would be possible with the sound module in the Neo1973?

Maybe an idea for the "Neo extras" store?

Idea:

In order to get the Neo 1973 to stay in sync with different devices
and PIMs, someone could make a Opensync plugin that supports whatever
Openmoko is using (is openmoko syncml compatible? IRMC?) I don't know,
anyhow - someone should make sure everything works out the way it
should with the plugins that already exist.

Opensync is still at the beta stage, but several people are using it
with great success already, including me (IrMC over bluetooth to KDE
PIM (Kontact))

Idea: Automatically turn on bluetooth on incoming call -> BT headset

2007-01-15 Thread MartinG

Hi list, just want to share this simple idea:

In order to save some battery and still be able to reveive a call to a
BT headset, the Neo 1973 should be able to automatically turn on
bluetooth when the phone rings, and then connect to the headset (of
course this should be optional).

It might very well be that this is standard on some phones and even
patented (sigh), but on my Sony Ericsson this is not possible and I
have to waste alot of battery in order to make use of my headset, as
the bluetooth circuit have to stay on at all times. This is also a
security risk.

Hurray for the bluetooth support in version 1 :)
