Re: moko running everything as root

2008-06-15 Thread Mikael Lammentausta
User John running sudo rm -rf /* is better than root running rm -rf
 /* because...?

Because sudo can be configured to accept users in certain groups to
run certain commands with or without a password. rm can be
restricted, whereas opkg can be permitted without password.

IMO, running everything as root introduces a whole world of possible
exploitations without any real benefits.

Re: Wireless Cracking / Hacking on the FreeRunner

2008-05-17 Thread Mikael Lammentausta
I think this was discussed on the list a while back, that the Atheros
firmware prevents the promiscuous mode being used. Can anyone confirm
this? Any changes to the policy by the chip manufacturer?

Re: digital compass modules

2008-01-23 Thread Mikael Lammentausta
The Nokia 5140 has a compass that works in the conventional method, by
reading the Earth's magnetic field vectors.

http://europe.nokia.com/A4144100

See the user guides, which are made with Flash... :o

Here is a page in Finnish with more information about the compass .. sorry,
couldn't find this in English.
http://www.nokia.fi/A4312238

A quick translation:

*Nokia 5140i -electronic compass technologies:
*

   - 2D sensor with a GUI
   - detects the horizontal x and y vectors of the Earth's magnetic field
   - tilt indicator (air bubble)

*Compass function:*

   - Electronics:
  - Driver control interface detector (?) = magnetometer
  - Test circuit = continuous magnetic field generator
  - Software:
  - Compass with a needle + angle in degrees
  - Direction on-screen arrow
  - Direction may be set on a landmark and followed, and the
offset from North may be entered
  - 1 degree precision
  - Mechanics
  - tilt detection

2008/1/23, Schmidt András [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Hi!

I was thinking about the same problem. But once I have seen a working
compass in a phone already (we have crossed thick woods following the
compass :-) - it was a friend's phone, I think a Nokia). So it is not
impossible to integrate into a phone.

Re: NO VOICE WHEN USING VOIP IN QTOPIA

2008-01-17 Thread Mikael Lammentausta
You can also try this:

mount the qtopia image, insert this into /etc/init.d/qpe on line 64:

alsactl -f /etc/gsmhandset.state restore

Save the image to a jffs2 file and re-flash the device.

I've no idea how this differs from the instructions you had earlier, but I
don't think it hurts either. Worked for me.

2008/1/16, 左 国坤 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Hi, Lorn,

 I have tried
 alsactl -f /etc/alsa/capturehandset.state restore
 but no any improvement.

can you please tell me when you release your improved snapshot?

 Regards.

Nope. something is missing from Qtopia :)
We are currently working on this, I think I will post a new snapshot

You man manually run alsactl -f /etc/alsa/capturehandset.state restore
  and try that.
