FOSDEM meetup

2010-02-04 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Hi list,

Since we got a devroom Sunday from 9-12, we could as well do a meet-up.
We could meet up when our devroom closes (in front of it) to have
something to eat/drink.

What do you say? Reply here when attending, I'll be there :-)

Since this is a mailinglist about openmoko's «free»runner, I think it's
normal to assume everyone on this mailinglist understands the idea
behind the free philosophy.

Freerunner gone...

2009-12-11 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Hi,

My moko got lost. Whether it got stolen or whether it just fell out of
my pocket, I have no idea. Today I felt pretty sad and I had some time
to think about things every distribution should have just to make sure
someone will not slam his head against the wall, repetitively, again and
again, like I did, for not installing some basic stuff that might
prevent these things from happening.

1. Sms sentry. Put that application, or a similar one, in every light
image we got: It will reply the GPS coordinates when texting
sentry:location to moko.
2. When another sms is send we should be able to put the volume to max
and play a voice saying: PLEASE RETURN THIS PORTABLE, IT IS LOST AND THE
OWNER TRIES TO FIND IT. I'd be happy to record that voice. And display
contact information on the screen delivered by sms.

What do you guys think? Saving €230 with 5 lines of code seems a big
deal to me (€230 + sim card + personal configurations + a lot more
personal stuff actually).

FOSDEM 2010: Devroom for openmoko declined

2009-12-01 Thread Pieter Colpaert

--- Begin Message ---
Dear Pieter,

We're sorry to bring you bad news, but your developer room request
for FOSDEM 2010 on behalf of the openmoko project has not
been accepted.

We realize that this must be disappointing news, but unfortunately we
don't have a sufficient number of rooms to our disposal to cover all
requests.

Just to clarify: your request is perfectly valid, but we had to pick.

Although your project will not have a devroom, there are other
possibilities to talk about it at FOSDEM:
* on http://fosdem.org/2010/list-devrooms-their-call-talks we host
a list of the accepted devrooms, with (soon) a link to their call
for talks -- perhaps one of the devrooms shares your interests ?
* projects that do not fit in a devroom can apply for a lightning talk,
  see http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_lightningtalks

You might want to contact Philippe De Swert (in CC:) as he is managing
the embedded developer room to have a session there, if Philippe sees
fit.

With kind regards,
on behalf of the FOSDEM devroom organizers,

Oh you were lucky! v0.01

2009-11-02 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Hi,

I made a small (demo) script which asks for a string on a commandline,
matches that string with a youtube video, and will play that video using
mplayer. Framerate is not that high, but both video and sound are
comprehensible.

Please take a look here: http://code.google.com/p/oywl/

Please email me when you want to be added to the list of commiters and
help out. I want to write a GUI for it that should become as usable as
eldentica (maybe we should steal some code).

When I got a little spare time this week I'll add this project to opkg.
If someone else is into packaging, feel free to do so.

Alright! Good one Sean & co! Even people I've never talked about
openmoko to about, have heard the news.

Any reactions from openmoko (Sean or anyone else?) on the success?

I hope openmoko does not see this as a victory, but as a new start for a
healthy company and a door for new (open/free) opportunities.

Congrats,

Dear list,

Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2010 there is another FOSDEM. We
(openmoko-community) haven't been to FOSDEM lately (correct me if I'm
wrong) and that got to change. What about having our own devroom and
give a sign to the world this community has not died since all what
happened lately. So my question is:
Who would like to come and represent openmoko?
Any thoughts on FOSDEM?

mplayer - rtsp - youtube

2009-10-24 Thread Pieter Colpaert
hi list,

is there a mplayer build for moko available that can handle the rtsp
protocol? My ubuntu mplayer (MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.3.3) does the trick, but
not the latest shr unstable mplayer (MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.1.2).

Example vid:
rtsp://v4.cache4.c.youtube.com/CkELENy73wIaOAnGbz7NeJeeixMYDSANFEIJbXYtZ29vZ2xlSARSBXdhdGNoWglDbGlja0xpbmtgqZW17Zb0qbRKDA==/0/0/0/video.3gp

The mobile version of youtube (http://m.youtube.com) uses this to play
their videos on mobile devices. I think it might be interesting to
create a youtube browser this way.

Re: Where do I discuss these Ideas??

2009-10-09 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Hi!

I like your ideas too and I'd like to share my possible future project
too ;):

BASH-LIKE PHONE

An openmoko distribution which uses FSO. The interface is just a shell
with on top of it a transparent keyboard (something like the
fatfingershell).
You can dail like this:
piet...@myphone$ dail +3248..
or a contact:
piet...@myphone$ dail hom # = pieterc phone home

dail should be a python/bash/... script using the FSO api.
other easy to use commands I can think of:
* addcontact contact #number# -group "friends"
* whereami (returns gsm locations and searches for cityname close to
that)
* sendtext "come home for dinner" son1 # sends sms to son1 (again with
autocompletion)
* wakemeup 7:30
* tail /var/mail #to read last text-messages

bash-commands or commands you're used to:
ls,cd,grep,awk,tail, ps, date, ...

and some ported apps:
* nethack (yes, the game)
* links/lynx,
* emacs (with erc)
* fortune (I like fortune a lot.)
* ...

I think it's extremely easy and fun to develop this idea. It would make
a perfect unix-lover-phone. We could hack on gnu bash to accomplish the
auto completion for contacts and other stuff.

Good app though! Very promising, I'm shocked I like qt that much ;)

Re: MP3 patents (was: Freerunner's Future)

2009-06-05 Thread Pieter Colpaert
I think it's a bad idea in general to discuss the topic. MP3's are non
free and should not be used by any openmoko-user. As myself I don't got
any mp3 on my computer, I only use ogg. The only disadvantage of ogg is:
you won't be able to share it with lots of friends, due they probably
use mp3. But as a matter of fact, sharing mp3's with friends is not
concidered very legal. So... There is no problem not using any mp3's on
the openmoko. The solution for people wanting to use openmoko as there
music device:

let's create a "music uploader" for OM2009 & SHR (on your pc: so should
have a version for linux as well as for mac and wyndaws):
The main screen should give us a selector list of all songs on your pc,
no matter if they're mp3/ogg/wav/etc when uploaded (through scp, that's
easy I guess) they get automatically converted to ogg, which is a quite
good standard to use on the openmoko. So no problems selling openmoko
anymore huh?

[android] new cupcake image

2009-05-20 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Michael Trimarchi, aka Panicking, released a new image for the cupcake
version of android (1.5). Anyone into testing?

images:

Good to hear Michael! Looking forward to see more.

[android] koolu beta 6?

2009-04-19 Thread Pieter Colpaert
http://koolu.org/releases/beta6/

I never heard of this before. Anyone tried it yet? Is this a cupcake
release (I just got used to the great soft keyboard in android 1.5!)?

Is there somewhere a "working/not working" list available?

[ReMoko] hexadecimal keys

2008-11-16 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Hi,
I've been looking into the Remoko project (and I like it very much,
thanks Valerio) But it doesn't seem to support buttons like 'play' or
'previous'. Gnome uses 0xa2 to play/pause, 0xa4 to stop, etc... I tried
putting those codes manually into the config file, but didn't work. Any
idea how to use these keys in Remoko?

[2007.2] - Where?

2008-11-10 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Hi,
I installed FDOM but I'm not quite satisfied:

~#ifup eth0
udhcpc (v1.9.1) started
Sending discover...
Sending discover...
Sending discover...
run-parts: /etc/udhcpc.d/99avahi-autoipd exited with return code 1
No lease, failing
(I haven't been able to get an IP-address from my AP)

and it's quite unstable overall...

So I wanted to get back to 2007.2 which was installed when I bought it.
BUT, I don't find any image anymore to flash it.

Does anyone know where to download it?
(I'm not such a big fan of the Qtopia stack)

Thanks,
Pieter

GNUboy-port: input method

2008-11-02 Thread Pieter Colpaert
Hi,
I did this on the gta01, so I don't know if this is going to work on the
freerunner: I've made a small script so you can play any gameboy (color)
game you'd like.

The problem is that the keyboard won't pop up when loading gnuboy, so I
forced it to be there all the time. I've also modded the keyboard
especially for a gameboy environment.

I assume you got the matchbox keyboard installed:

script:

#! /bin/bash
#script to load a gb(c)
#Made by Pieter Colpaert
killall matchbox-keyboard
matchbox-keyboard > /dev/null 2>&1 &
#cd to the gnuboy path:
cd /media/card/gnuboy*.*/
#pg.gbc is the game (notice: the game must be in the same dir as gnuboy)
./sdlgnuboy --fullscreen=0 --scale=2 pg.gbc
#after closing, it will reload the keyboard
killall matchbox-keyboard
matchbox-keyboard > /dev/null 2>&1 &

And i've added a keyboard-layout to matchbox ( if not exist, create:
~/.matchbox/keyboard.xml):

I also added a screenshot.

I hope this is helpfull to someone.
