Re: microSD support

I just want to give a short note that this is not true. Fat32 supports partition
size of up to 2TiB. Microsoft artificially limited Windows 2000 and following to
be able to create Fat32 partitions of max 32GiB. Using other tools to create
them (such as mkfs.vfat) it's still possible to create those partitions. And
Windows reads and writes to them.

Of course now that there's a reasonable stable NTFS access from Linux it doesn't
matter that much anymore but a few years back this was quite a pain in the ass.

No doubt there's a lot of crappy SD cards out there that don't comply

well to standard interfaces though, but unless you're really really
skimping there's likely nothing to worry about with any common microsd
cards.

You could even support larger cards because we aren't limited to fat32

on a linux phone.

But has anybody found an SD card that doesn't work with existing

hardware?? I only wish I had hardware so I can't test the few cards I
have..

I think he's asking if the phone will support SDHC, which is required
for larger cards and many older devices do not support. Or perhaps if
8GB in particular has been tested. It would be nice to know exactly what
is supported, as those 8GB cards are getting cheap lately. We might have
to wait for the first phones to ship to know for sure what will or will
not work. Right now, only the OM dev team at FIC could test it for sure,
and they are kind of busy getting mass production going. I think I'd
rather have them do that and test the microSD size limits later.

So you're probally good.

Re: Is anyone else getting 2 or 3 copies of every mails?

2008-05-06 Thread Stefan Misch

I have the same problem and ironically I got this Nope, not me twice.

I'm pretty sure, I did not subscribe twice, because I do not get every mail
twice, only a rare few of them.

I checked the headers of both mails and they seem to be identical save for the
Message-Id. ([EMAIL PROTECTED] vs.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]).

It's pretty weird. I always thought it was just someguy accidently sending
messages twice.

Anyone else seeing this?

Re: Multi-Level Markting - Is OpenMoko interested in?

2008-05-05 Thread Stefan Misch

Hello Roland,

while I think that the OpenMoko should get more attention in the media I don't
think it's a good idea to use all methods you mentioned.

An affiliate program (e.g. via zanox) would be a great idea but forced clicks
and paid mails are dubious advertising methods at best. IMHO the Freerunner
should get a more *honest* (in lack of a better word) advertising than that.

Also I think that as long as the software is not end-user friendly it's better
to stick to word-of-mouth advertising plus technology geared media.

Take care,
Stefan

Hi together,

as the subject said I'm asking here if OpenMoko is interested in multi level
marketing? You can read about the basics on Wikipedia if you don't know
it. :)

My friend and I have a (German) Internet marketing platform with about 800+
registrations. We have a lot different ways of marketing there. Here are only
some examples:

- Mails directly delivered to our members
- Click mails where they have to login to get their reward
- Banners (forced-click banner and rotation banners)
- Textlinks
- An AdSense-like system (in planing phase)
- 1 Euro for a 88x31 or textlink for one year
- Bonus campaigns (a bit like button or textlink promotion)
- Sign up actions

If you like I can send you the link directly not here in mailing list.

And have you heard about Zanox?

Best regards,
Roland Haeder

PS: I have CC-ed Trisoft and my friend. :)

Will it be possible for us in Europe to make a bulk order directly

we need to shop from TRIsoft. I will order 20 Freerunners, and can

Hello Flemming,

you could also try pulster.de

I'm not sure about their shipping policy to other countries than Germany but
they're targetting a price of 300 Euro per unit.

Thoughts about calls not taken

2008-04-23 Thread Stefan Misch

Hi,

I have an idea going through my mind about rejecting phone calls.

Today when I reject a call the mobile provider redirects the call to the voice
box which I have to call later on to get the message. The way the voice boxes
work now is really cumbersome and additionally I have to pay for it.

I thought why couldn't the phone do that instead? This way we could also have a
better distinction between the two cases when the voice box is used:

1. The provider cannot reach the phone (ie. out of range, or phone is turned
off)

2. Called person cannot talk right now (Meeting, cinema, etc.)

The first must of course still be taken by the mobile provider's voice box. But
the second could be handled by an answering machine right on the phone. The
calling person will be charged anyway. The message would be something along the
lines: I'm sorry, but I can't take your call right now. Please leave a message
after the tone and I'll call you back!

This would tell the caller that he should not try again within the next 5
minutes more clearly ;)

Additionally the the answering machine could have a much better interface
similar to the visual voicemail on the iPhone. While I certainly don't want an
iPhone clone I have to admit that this is really a neat feature.

Has this service already been hacked in a way that it's possible to use this
without an iPhone? It's probably tied to the iPhone and their contracts but
which platform would be better suited to have this as well than the OpenMoko? :)

What are your thoughts about this?
Stefan

Re: Data over normal GSM call

2008-04-11 Thread Stefan Misch

Hi,

I just talked about this issue with a colleague who uses an HTC PDA with windows
mobile. For the data connection he uses a dial-up connection as a modem. He
doesn't have a data plan but a flat fee for voice calls into land lines.

He says he gets about up to 4K/s which is not much of course but it's still
possible to view light websites or emails with it. (I would not want to use it
with Google Maps for example which is one of the key features why I would want
mobile internet access.)

So I don't think it's impossible. Maybe the hardware and the codecs are
different on OpenMoko but I doubt that this is an obstacle that cannot be overcome.

All best,
Stefan

this is not possible, since regular voice calls for GSM are not
bit-transparent, i.e. the voice signal is coded and potentially re-coded
(transcoded) a number of time between the calling and receiving party.

Data calls over GSM are done using CSD. They also use quite a lot more
 error correction than voice calls.
