Interesting new 'Open' Hardware how do I build shr for it?

2010-11-29 Thread c_c

Hi,
I was looking at arowboat.org - which is a project at getting Android
working on all TI OMAP series boards and I saw a link to opensourcemid.org.
Apparently, Embest (who also make the DevKit 8000 - a beagle board like
board) have made a 7 MID with GPS, camera, mini PCIe (they have a WCDMA
module), WiFi and bluetooth running on OMAP 3530.
  I ordered a device and I find that :-

1. It's built quite well
2. It's responsive and fast (running android 2.1 as of now)
3. The hardware schematics are available online
4. The source code for kernel 2.6.29, x-loader and u-boot are also
available online
5. It has a lot of space between the board and the casing - I'm thinking
mods like the Freerunner Navigation board
6. The company seems responsive enough

I'm now looking at getting a custom kernel (something newer) running on
it. Also, I was aondering how do I get SHR ported onto such a device? I have
the entire openembedded based SHR build system (something I've been using to
build stuff for the FreeRunner) with me - but I'm not sure how to go about
changing the target system.

So here are my questions :-
1. How do I port SHR to this device (or any other for that matter)
2. Would any other distribution in the community be interested?
3. How do I get freesmartphone.org guys etc interested?
4. Is this sort of interest taboo here ;-)

I've read enough threads about the next device - but I haven't seen
anything remotely open and available at a decent price till now. Maybe I
need enlightening - but this device seems interesting enough. And it does
give me a new system to build on.

I would love to see an SHR / Qt based system for something like this.
Andriod is getting better, but frankly, I'd prefer linux based distro any
day over it.

  So, what do you think?

Re: Interesting new 'Open' Hardware how do I build shr for it?

2010-11-29 Thread c_c

Oh! I forgot, it also has 1 mini usb, 2 normal USB ports (keyboard
anyone!), a mic, front-facing camera with the connections for a rear facing
one on the board, a UART output, SIM slot, TF card slot, audio out and video
out.
Seems to have pretty much covered everything out there.

Disclaimer : I have nothing to do with embest. Just thought I'd let the
community now. They claim to be 'open' - maybe the community can see if they
truly are.

Re: Interesting new 'Open' Hardware how do I build shr for it?

2010-11-29 Thread c_c

Hi Martin,
Can you elaborate? Say I add another conf file to conf/machine/ called
K7.conf. How do I now make a root image for this arch? Of course, I intend
keeping my build system intact for the FR too. So how do I get bitbake to
build images for both in different places on my file system.
As you can see, I'm quite a noobie when it comes to using bitbake for
building images and that sort of thing.

Thanks

Re: Ventura Debian package? [Re: ventura upgrades]

2010-04-29 Thread c_c

Hi,
@ Kai : How do you compile packages for debian on FR? Using a toolchain
or a bitbake recipe?

I don't have debian on my FR - or a build system for debian on my PC. What
needs to be done is to build ewebkit and ventura using the debian build
system.

My understanding is that if you can get ewebkit to compile (using whatever
packages debian has - new or old or just differently named) then compiling
ventura should not be an issue.

You can check out the code from the repo at elm-browser.googlecode.com,
change the Makefile.am to use the names of packages as existing in debian
and run autogen.sh. ventura mainly depends on elementary and ewebkit.

   1. Clicking on the date/time (black box) will open the current month's
calendar.
   2. The settings are available from the gears icon at the top right
   3. The app browser is a second window that open on clicking the app

   4. The layout is edj based. so perhaps someone can help me make it
better.

launcher pre-release version and help needed with edj

2010-03-04 Thread c_c

success. So, I'm posting the latest ipk with the corresponding gui.c file in

supposed to be used.

 Here are the files

shr-launcher_local-r0.4_armv4t.ipk and
http://n2.nabble.com/file/n4668819/gui.c gui.c

The following problems are being faced :-
 1. I'm using a swallow object for the wallpaper. Somehow, this leads to the
wallpaper using up only the space used by other widgets
 2. Some objects don't appear on the FR while the desktop version shows them
- like the app button

Launcher now uses indices for contacts and has a number of improvements
all available with this ipk - but this edj change has slowed me down
drastically.
  Any help is welcome.

2010-01-18 Thread c_c

Hi,
As does eve - with the error that it couldn't create a webview. Definitely
a problem with webkit.

Does anyone know where the development is takingplace on webkit-efl? The
gitorious site hardly has any commits after Seop 09.

Re: Freerunner can now play Ogg video

2010-01-18 Thread c_c

Hi,
I'm using timo's .29 faster kernel. I had the gsm not registering with
this kernel using fso-abyss. Somehow, in my case (though I've has #1024 and
buzz fix applied) using gsm0710muxd always works.
fso-abyss is very temperamental - but sometimes starts working all of a
sudden.

Re: elm_browser initial release

2010-01-16 Thread c_c

Hi,

Flash works fine when I compile browser on my laptop. It automatically
uses ~/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so.
I tried using swfdec compiled for arm4t in a similar directory on the FR -
but no joy.
If we could get a npapi flash plugin for the arm4t, flash should start
working. Any ideas? Does the android browser use a flash plugin that we can
use?

Al Johnson wrote:

Dropdown lists dont work. Maybe someone with edje experience can help by
modifying the default.edj file in /usr/share/browser. Thats the one being
shipped with webkit-efl. Seems like there hasn't been much work on it for
the past four months or so.

I'll post a slightly cleaned up version tomorrow - with a new name and
hopefully a decent icon. :)

Re: elm_browser NEW release 15 Jan

2010-01-15 Thread c_c

Hi,

Here's the new version. Changes :-
 * Rotation issue still exists - but behaves better
 * Start Page works
 * Command line url is accepted (needs full http://yourpage.com)

Caveats

 * After the browser becomes full screen, there's no way to revert back
since the settings page is not shown. I'll change the menu to cater for
this.
 * Haven't yet figured out how to access the webkit settings.

  Enjoy! http://n2.nabble.com/file/n4397665/browser_1.0-r0.4_armv4t.ipk

:-

 * Is there a bookmarking api in webkit ?
 * How do I make a webview transparent in webkit-efl ?
 * Evas triple click doesn't work. Any Ideas ?
 * Can and edje file alse provide signal callbacks if I use it through
elementary layout ?

Thanks and enjoy!

elementary webkit browser

2010-01-10 Thread c_c

Hi,
Well, I was experimenting with webview in order to embed widgets in
launcher - and so ended up making a browser (like eve) but using elementary
and with finger scrolling.
I'm hoping someone can help me use an edje file for layout - my edje
knowledge isn't all that great. I'm looking at getting the lower button /
url bar (cum progressbar) as an edje widget. I'm open to ideas - if people
aren't tired of giving some :)
I was looking at a semi-transparent button in the lower left corner of the
browser that indicates % progress as the page gets loaded. On clicking the
button - a menu comes up that provides all the other functions - bookmarks,
zooming etc. Maybe the back and fwd button can be here - or use some
gestures on the main screen.
I'll add the patch to eve to get finger scrolling soon.

Here is the code (not yet on a repository) and the .bb file for those
interested. Works on latest shr-u.

launch 6 sec too. So no speed improvements either.

There are a number of advantages to C that I can think of, the main ones
being speed and smaller memory requirements.

The launching speed is not the best benchmark since intone :-

1. checks for mplayer's presence
2. restores its state from a db
3. modprobes snd-pcm-oss
4. creates the fifo files to control mplayer
5. checks for zombie mplayer processes
6. kills them
7. starts up mplayer
8. renices it
9. starts a thread for the dbus calls

before the window is created. I guess I could reduce the window showing
time - it's just not been that much of an issue.

Try playing an ogg file in the background (~50% cpu) with a reasonably
long playlist that needs scrolling and see what happens when you scroll if
the frontend is in python.

I do agree about the easier part and the dev cycle being shorter in
python.

Anyhow, if you can help me with the edc files - I can write the code. And
if you can help with the code - even better :-)

Hi,

Petr Vanek wrote:

it feels very responding, after all data is loaded. (most delays seem
to be caused by waiting for the opimd data).

Actually, the contacts are synced the first time only. The SMS's are
typically not that many, but for opimd to go through all the calls, parse
them and send them through the dbus really takes long. Since launcher
doesn't know if you received calls when it wasn't running, it uses the time
of the last call it has in its local db to query for newer calls from opim.
Hence the delay. Typically, about 10 - 12 secs. Keeping a smaller log will
speed up launcher.
I've been thinking of deleting all the calls older than those launcher
displays - or some x days automatically. What do you think?

Petr Vanek wrote:

 1) in contacts, all the categories are listed twice (all empty), this
was also the same in .39.

That must be something I'm doing wrong in the db creation. While I solve
that issue, you could remove those duplicates (and change them to something
more appropriate to yourself) manually by changing the category names in the
contacts_cat table.

- sqlite .launcher/launcher.db
- delete from contacts_cat; (or delete from contacts_cat where
category='Family';)
- delete from contacts_cat where key = 1;
- insert into contacts cat (category) values ('your_new_cat');

I will finish work on the customisation of categories in some time.

If you have deleted the old launcher db - you've lost the categorisation of
the apps and the contacts. Maybe I need to shift this to another db - so
that the working db can be deleted but this data remains.

To set categories for the contacts click on set cat. You'll see a list of
your contacts. Select a category, select the contacts you want in that
category and click 'Set Category' button. The selected contacts will be
removed from this list and appear under their category.

Petr Vanek wrote:

contacted them last?

Re: Gift for c_c

2009-10-29 Thread c_c

Hi,
I've thought of doing something similar. The only problem I face is
creating the edje files. But :-

1. If we're looking at going the edje way - which does give far better
layout options (something I had thought about for intone anyway) it would be
better if intone's look could be overhauled.

What I mean is, for eg - we could have rounded buttons (play/pause),
simple animation for sliding out the vol control etc.

My thinking is that since the core seems fairly stable (need to add
reporting mplayer errors though) - the gui can go through a transformation.
We could get more feedback from other users too (even as the gui develops).
I could give you (or anybody else who's interested) write access to the svn
- that will help the dev process and make it faster.

The only reason I haven't moved to edc files is my limitation with the
layout. Your help (or anyone else's) will be welcome in improving the user
experience.

2. I'll look at implementing the mplayer error reporting part soon. That's
something that causes most of the remining hangs (if they do occur) - since
right now intone doesn't respond to mplayer crashing / hanging / getting
killed. And this is a drawback. The right behaviour should be to pause, tell
the user something, re-start mplayer and continue playing from where the
error occurred or move on to the next song.

3. Then - I will add the auto-scrolling feature for karaoke.

What do you think?

Re: Launcher Release 0.39

Hi,
Well, I've been thinking about making a few more changes like :-

1. a second screen to the right that shows up on a finger slide with the
category toolbar and program icons
2. a home screen with :-
   (a) some widgets (weather, facebook etc)
   (b) lists for tasks/calendars/events etc
   (c) a grid based (drag and drop) layout for some regularly used apps

In order to do this, I need pointers / ideas / help about :-

1. how to implement a C framework that can be used by other dev's / users to
create widgets using e17
2. help in creating the theme / edge files
3. maybe some pointers to code I can re-use

All ideas, code and pointers (and anything else however whacky) are
welcome. I do need some coding help too - launcher is getting rather large
for me to maintain - and has a lot of poor design decisions that need rework
too.

it registers fine.

1. Can someone tell me what this means?
2. I tried android's latest release and surprisingly, the modem registered
fine immediately!

Is this a new bug?
:( I'm on roaming - if that makes any diff - but I'm surprised how fast the
newer version of android boots up and registers (with a small r to indicate
the roaming status)!!

shr-u on the other hand takes 4 tries or so to register successfully.
Seems to be a software prob in my opinion now - but I can't confirm that
without more help.

Mickey - can you shed some light on the error messages?

Would it be fine if this is in the settings page? Something like you could

Glad you liked it though. Do send me feedback on what can be improved. I'm

The svn has been updated with a few fixes and changes in the configuration

Re: GSM errors after 1024 fix

2009-10-15 Thread c_c

Hi,
Well, mine is working for now. I managed to reboot it to show android to a
friend - and it registered both in android and in shr-u - after I 'thumped'
it a few times ;-)
It might be because of some loose connection - I intend getting it checked
soon - just need some time from pending stuff.
Definitely a hardware problem - unless 'organic' software starts
responding to thumping too ;-)

BTW - I did switch the modem to 'always' and there haven't been any updates
to shr-u for a long time now - so the software is the same as before the
buzz fix.

Somehow, I can't seem to notice any significant increase in the battery
standby time either. How do I check for the modem recamping?

Messages in the SIM do not get deleted from opim. Rescanning restores those

Re: Launcher - v 0.37 Release UPDATED (inbuilt contacts, sms and phonelog)

2009-09-25 Thread c_c

Hi,
Hmmm. There seems to be something odd here. The sms window _is_ closed
when the Del All button is pressed (since the last three binaries).
I've repacked the newer binary and icons as the latest package. Try this.
I'm getting no glibc errors though the largest conversation I had was about
12 sms's. And I haven't yet got a SQL:library out of sequence error
either. Can you tell me how many contacts/sms's you have in total? I must be
missing something obvious.
This newer version is faster because it doesn't delete and re-sync all the
contacts every time. The settings window lets you sync contacts if you've
changed something from another program and need to get launcher up to date.

  Changes
 * doesn't re-sync contacts every time
 * contacts can categorised
 * resync sms/contacts/calls from settings page
 * fixes bug where opim was not updated correctly for sms' sent/not sent

not quite doing right. Will recheck.

KaZeR wrote:

The icons aren't being shown because the opim db was not correctly updated
in the past. I'm not sure how to correct this now - but the opim sms data
needs to be updated to indicate whether the message was sent or not. As of
now, the older sms's will not show any icon.

KaZeR wrote:

Seems so. I wonder how slow it must be. The bubbles were not really meant
to be used for such a long thread.
Seriously, do you need to keep 60 sms's in a thread? :-D

Is there something else that can be used instead of the bubbles?
Maybe bare text with icons (in/out) ?

Have been too busy to get a release out - though I have squashed a few
bugs. Try the attached binary - that's the latest.

Re: Launcher - v 0.37 Release UPDATED (inbuilt contacts, sms and phonelog)

2009-09-23 Thread c_c

Hi,
It seems like this error occurs (generally) when the database is accessed
from more than 1 thread at the same time.
Are you waiting for the Please Wait... message to change to launcher
before opening a conversation / log / sms or contacts?
Anyhow, try the attached binary to see if this one helps.
Thanks

Re: Launcher - v 0.37 Release UPDATED (inbuilt contacts, sms and phonelog)

2009-09-23 Thread c_c

Hi,
To be clear - the Please Wait.. message appears in the window title.
Both 21 SQL Error and 44 SQL Error should happen soon after start but
before the Please Wait ...
changes to Launcher.
  Can you confirm that?
Thanks.

Re: mplayer-video ?

Hi,

I was using the xglamo optimised version of mplayer for playing video
(named differently to keep it separate from the standard mplayer).
Can you try this [1] version of mplayer? Copy it into the /usr/bin/
directory as mplayer-video. Intone-video should install and work as expected
after that.
I'm going to make some changes soon that make intone-video better at
playing video and zooming the video to fullscreen.

Re: mplayer?

2009-09-17 Thread c_c

Hi,
Well, it's great to hear your music is being played fine. I'm still trying to
find a solution to your song scanning issue on reiserfs. Just that I've been a
little short of time of late having spent a lot of time on upgrading launcher's
inbuilt sms, contacts and phonelog apps.
Have you tried the new launcher?
Thanks for the feedback.

The 1 sec or less were probably wma/mp4 etc for which tag support hasn't
been included. The one's taking long must be the mp3 tag v3 (maybe with
embedded images) which take long. I'm trying to make this faster.

Ah! Sorry for the mixup. I'll get that sorted out too. :-)

fixes applied currently) till I force upgraded libfsotransport (which wasn't
getting upgraded on its own for some reason).
But the sep releases have so far been fine for me. Maybe you should
re-install on another partition, upgrade and confirm that the problem still
persists. There have been issues in upgrading shr-U sometimes.
BTW - So it took you 3 days to get the phone back? I'm likely to be in
Delhi around the 15th or so for about a week. Hopefully I can get the phone
fixed in that time.
