Qemu builds - can anyone post one for download?
I have read a bit about building the current software for the Qemu environment, but I am wondering if anyone regularly builds these anyways and can just provide us with a download link or a torrent so that we can download and run it a bit easier than building it anew for each user? I am thrilled with the announcement of the phone's release, and I would love to help a bit with UI investigations. -- start using Free software http://www.linux.org/ http://www.linux.com/ http://makethemove.net/ It's a matter of Liberty not Price: Free Software exists to prevent corporate-control of Your computer. Re: Clarification Rant
If FIC/OpenMoko could run some sort of deal where I could buy the GTA01 for $300 and send it back in for a $150 or $200 upgrade when the GTA02 comes out, I would buy into that. agreed, but really, what would they do with it? I could see /maybe/ a slight discount... but 150+ is a lot as I am not a developer, I think I am best off waiting until the October release. Re: OpenMoko - We Need HYPE, and we need it yesterday!
ok, ok, i get it. No one else thinks its a good idea to promote the Neo1973 yet (well, no one has chimed in to agree with me) i guess we can save the hype until we have a real product, but i think that we're missing a big opportunity to let people know that something great is coming and they should consider saving their six hundred dollars to buy our better, less-expensive phone. but if now is not the time, i too can wait. but really, i can *barely* wait for this thing! -- start using Free software http://www.linux.org http://www.fsf.org It's a matter of Liberty not Price: Free Software exists to free you from the artificial constraints set by Apple and Microsoft. Re: Neo1973 Update!
How does Phase1 and Phase2 differ for the user (non-dev) who will be buying in September (or whenever the release date is)? Will the first public release of these phones be Phase2 or Phase2+? Should we be hyping the wifi on the Neo1973 when discussing the phone with others, or should we be telling them that yeah the Neo1973 phone will be awesome, but *you* should wait until 2008...? I am hoping for the former, e.g. that wifi will be available on all publicly-released phones. But, I really don't know... OpenMoko - We Need HYPE, and we need it yesterday!
Regardless of where the hardware and software are right now, I would imagine that they both will be further along come release date. But, outside of this community and the few people that remember us telling them about the FIC Neo1973 and the OpenMoko platform, who knows about this phone or platform? Slashdot and NYTimes and many other sites have articles about the Apple iPhone, but very rarely is the Neo1973 mentioned. We, the OpenMoko community, are interested in these articles too (I would imagine), and yet no one ever posts a comment about the Neo1973 (except me, it seems). If we don't get the mainstream press to write about the Neo1973, we (or FIC) are going to have a difficult time selling devices and getting out there. If they (press) won't write about the Neo1973, the least we can do is mention the Neo1973 in the reader comments, with a link to the wiki. Here is one such article from just this weekend. The iPhone will be getting a lot of coverage, and as different as the two philosophies may be, the average person on the street will see the two phones as very similar. If we have a great feature comparison, why not let people know?? http://news.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/06/03/fever-builds-for-iphone-anxiety-too/ I hope that we can start to create some buzz about this product! Being open, being able to work with multiple service providers, being unlocked, being cheaper, being higher-resolution... all of these are benefits that we must PROMOTE. The quicker we can post on an article, the higher on the Comments list we will be and the more reads that comment will get. Re: OpenMoko - We Need HYPE, and we need it yesterday!
Just mentioning the Neo1973's merits and existence will open many eyes. People read Apple news (and the buzz which passes for news), and then read comments; not a lot of non-tech people read news about an unknown product (or less-visible company, FIC). I agree that we can be better heard in the future by people who are looking for us, but those that are looking for the iPhone today might find us interesting and may not come across us otherwise, now or in the future... -- start using Free software http://www.linux.org http://www.fsf.org It's a matter of Liberty not Price: Free Software exists to free you from the artificial constraints set by Apple and Microsoft. Re: information efficient text enty using dasher
I just watched the Google Video and I found it to be a very cool item. The one-handed aspect of typing with Dasher is useful but I think that using a finger or stylus would be more accommodating -- tilt control (if we had it) could possibly make the screen unviewable, and in/out with the single button might override (or be overridden by) whatever that button's default action is. Another option, with our high-res screen, could be a dasher-like implementation but be more touch-based, i.e. the most likely letter is next and colour-coded and layed out pretty identically, etc, but rather than navigating to the next letter with an always-in-contact stylus-to-screen or always pressed button, one would just tap the next letter with a finger or stylus, with navigation/zoom abilities Original poster, thank you for the link to the Google Video! ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Neo1973 vs Future OpenMoko Devices - whats a buyer to do?
I've not seen any of these devices except in the photos, and I've not seen any video/screen capture of the software in its current state. I understand that this is a first-generation device, and that when the Neo1973 is released that FIC will also be releasing a few additional 'secret' devices. :) If this first-generation phone isn't ready for general use, what is the expected timeline for the next round of devices? Will the second or third generation devices be far superior to the first generation? Or can I expect to survive with the first-generation device and be happy with semi-rapid development and release of improved software? Sorry, I don't code so I cannot help with this aspect, but if the first month of software/device use is difficult but improves rapidly, i could live with that! ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: First impressions of Neo1973
I too would love to hear more about the phone, even if its an early release. Take it outside for us, and tell us about the sunlight reading! Send us a photo of it being 'big', maybe in comparison to another phone or a soda can or mouse pad! Does anyone know if there are plans for the final design to be shrunk down a bit, if there really seems to be this much empty space? Durability of the Neo1973?
I was just looking at my current phone's size to compare it to the reports of the Neo1973, and I dropped my phone. I do this a lot, and the phone has held up. Each new phone I purchase is due to a battery issue only. I have never broke a phone due to it falling (but I have broke an iPod due to the internal drive failing after a fall!) Considering that the Neo1973 has no hard drive, how well should we expect the rest of the hardware to hold up due to falls, drops, etc? -- start using Free software http://www.linux.org http://www.fsf.org It's a matter of Liberty not Price: Free Software exists to free you from the artificial constraints set by Apple and Microsoft. Re: Gaming oportunities
Some of the easier ideas could be: 1. Tic-Tac-Toe: grid changes colour for the Red player's turn, or Blue player's turn 2. Connect Four: grid also changes colour 3. Checkers 4. Chess 5. Gem Drop (already GPL, some info here http://www.tucows.com/preview/9259) 6. that addictive Photo game where you have to spot the 5 differences in x seconds 7. KMines or something like MS's Minesweeper 8. Tron? :) On 1/16/07, Wil Chung [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, this is my first time posting, I'm just been lurking so far. Looks like everyone, including myself is excited about openmoko. Engin's recent post on controls had me thinking: Why do we have buttons in games? But I think we had buttons to control games because early game makers didn't have direct interactivity with the game elements, and the closest thing they had were the buttons as controls. But now that we're a step closer to direct manipulation of game objects, we want to put buttons on it. I'm not sure this is the right way to go, because it seems like we're trying to retrofit things. I have to admit, tactile feedback is pretty important in how we interact with our devices. However, when it comes to playing games, I see no reason to put direction buttons, shoot and jump button as artifacts on the screen. Why not use the touchscreen as a way to directly manipulate game elements? NintendoDS could be a guide here. Just as a suggestion for first-person shooters, couldn't the tracing of the finger on the screen correspond to where the player character is looking, and a tap to shoot? And the soccer game that you just mentioned, couldn't the dribbler of the ball move to where your finger is, and pass or shoot to where you tap? the main problem with touch screen controls is you cannot give the user my hands fits on this button feeling. this feeling makes the players comfortable about controlling the characters, etc. on th screen. as i said before, also virrtual keypads can be used, or just touching can be a great idea for games... we had some experiences with touchscreen gaming, and the users mainly don't like to playimg doom-like games with a touchscreen, they feel more comfortable with arcade style games... gamers mostly used to a controlling device like joypads, mouse, or keyboards nowadays. and as we experienced, gamers like the analog joysticks of gamepads most. because it gives the feeling of really controlling the character on the screen. but with ipod usage, people used to control simple and touch input device... and now they like mainly no button idea. so that this is an advantage for touch screen games. and also people nowadays like playing arcade games on every playform (even the next-gen gaming consoles). maybe another problem is the response time of the touch screens. this could effect the gameplay experience. the main problem can be the usage of the screen. this is what Nokia N-Gage bumps onto wall. they didn't used a psp like widescreenish screen for gaming. and this became a huge limitation for game developers. If there is a vertical usage oportunity in games, then the games can be more attractive for people. i want to tell you about one of my experiences. we've developed two soccer games for mobile phones (a j2me game, not a s60 game). in the first edition we used the screen as n-gage used, people liked the game but in the second edition we usd the screen in vertical position. then the number pad became like a joypad for right hand. and the area of usage became incredibly beatiful. it triple the first edition downloads and people returned incredibly beatiful comments to us. because there was no (maybe 1-2 more) games that uses the screen of mobile phones vertical. ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community -- be seeing you. ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org https://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
