[2008.12] Make the sound setting permanent

2008-12-24 Thread julien cubizolles
Hi, I've switched to Om2008.12 yesterday and really enjoyed it. I'm
suggesting an improvement to the volume bar during calls. Could the last
setting be recalled on the next call. So far, I've always needed to set
it to max and it's not very convenient when you don't use a headset.

Also, what alsa setting does it change ?

Btw couldn't this volume bar be adjusted by the AUX button (you don't
really need to lock/unlock during a call). It would be more convenient
in my opinion : you don't need to put down the handset to ajust it.

Thanks for the good work,

Julien.

It can wait. Just out of curiosity, is there some work being done on
this front ?

  GPS :

You can just fire up Tango and frameworkd will activate the GPS for it.
The other two tabs in zhone (from memory - I'm running SHR right now) are:
an itemized list of satellites it's seeing, and a polar graph on which it
plots satellites. (so at the start they're blank and a dartboard,
 respectively)

I took the time to test it and I could indeed get a fix from tangoGPS.
Didn't get back to the Zhone gps display to check it. I will soon.

  Power Management settings:
I think frameworkd handles power management, not illume.

I finally figured it out.

Several applications from the Home menu (terminal, Htop for instance)
  won't start.

You can try changing /usr/share/applications/htop.desktop to exec
openmoko-terminal2 htop, or install xterm and exec xterm -e htop. (I've
done the latter) What else isn't starting?

openmoko-agpsui, Terminal, numptyphysics. I'll check through ssh what is
the reason.

[FSO] First steps

2008-11-19 Thread julien cubizolles
I just installed FSO and I'm quite happy with it : it seems the most
reponsive distribution I have yet used. I still have some questions :

Addressbook : Is there a way to import a former qtopia sqlite file ? I
read some discussions inconclusive about it, is there some advances ?

Calendar : openmoko-calendar2 isn't available in repositories. What can
I use ? I

GPS : do I need to click the map icon in zhone to powerup the antenna
and use it with tangogps ? What are the three upper buttons supposed to
do in the Zone gps application ? The first one displays
latitude/longitude... (right now it displays N/A but I'm inside...)
The second and third one open some window with obviously resolution and
colors issues.

Power Management settings: The settings from the wrench menu in illume
don't seem to have any effect : the phone dims + blanks + locks after a
minute or so even I set the blank time to off and doesn't suspend even
though the suspend time after blank is 1s.

Suspend : according to the wiki, you need to press the power button for
2 s to suspend the phone. It doesn't work for me, just powers it off
after 7-8 s.

Sound : What's the best way to adjust the sound level ? I guess there's
still no GUI for that. I've tried playing with several .state files
during my first tries with other distributions but things change fast on
this topic : what is the control to adjust ?

Several applications from the Home menu (terminal, Htop for instance)
won't start.

I'm running :

compiled. Compiled stuff usually is faster.

The dialer application is not written in python, is it ? It seems to me

Workaround for the suspend problem in ASU

2008-09-03 Thread julien cubizolles
To summarize : there is at the moment no way to suspend the Freerunner
from either the POW button or using the Suspend Time from Settings.

However, the blank time and suspend after blank from the Power
setting of the wrench (from the illume-config package or
illume-config-illume, I've lost track) are valid. So :

* if you want your Freerunner to suspend after 60s, set for example the
blank time to 60s ant the suspend after blank to 1s.

* if you don't want it to suspend at all (when plugged via usb), set the
blank time to off.

Note that when you wake the phone, with the POW button, you'll have to
tap the screen to get the screen back on since it wakes blank :
something else that should be corrected.

I also noticed that since upgrading to OM2008.9 testing, it takes much
longer than before to wake up, something around 15. I timed it by
putting the phone to sleep through apm -s (this way it doesn't wake up
blank) or, if it wakes up blank by waiting for the sound of the speaker
coming back on.

 Hi Julien, I am Julian.

As far as I know, Zecke did a commit and trying to fix it.
(the revision of qtopia-phone-x11 is 9971aa8a...)

As Yorick's report in Trac, it seems didn't be fixed yet.

I'm running raster's image upgrade to the Om2008.8-update repos and I
can make/receive calls as I could with zecke's repos. So for me it's
fine.

Qtopia and GPRS

2008-08-26 Thread julien cubizolles
I think I got GPRS working with my operator (bouyguestelecom) on Qtopia
through the gui

I get the online message on the gui, but I can't ping any address, not
even the default gateway (10.64.64.64) set by the pppd it seems.

ifconfig gives :

usb0
default 10.64.64.64 0.0.0.0 UG0 00

Using the gui I configured :

APN : mmsbouygtel.com
username :wap (I think you can put whatever you want but there has to be
something)
password : wapwap

Proxy : tried 62.201.129.225:8080 (according to
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GPRS#Some_APN_names_for_reference) and
blank

I can provide logreads if needed but they seem to only log pppd messages
which are fine I think.

ASU keyboards, again

2008-08-26 Thread julien cubizolles
I've installed raster's image, mainly to get its great keyboard, and I
love being able to switch modes/adding my own (french keyboard).

However I have some isssues.

1 : sometimes, an application calls a keyboard and I get stuck with the
old keyboard. Is there a way to prevent that from opening so that no
matter what I always get raster's one ?

2 : I don't understand how predicive those two keyboards are. For me
predictive would mean suggesting the n+1 (or n+p) character when I have
pressed n keys. At the moment the only thing it does is suggesting
several combination of n keys, to correct some typos I would have made.
It's very annoying since the word I correctly typed isn't necessarily
displayed among those suggestions. Is that how a predictive is
supposed to work or am I missing something here ?

Btw Is there a way to scroll through the suggestions of the predictive
keyboard ?

ASU is finally usable as a phone for me, and I'm ready to use it as my

1 : I can't imagine typing the 20+ random characters of my WPA key in
the Wifi GUI. In which file is it stored ? I found it in Qtopia
(/home/root/Applications/Network/config/wlan0.conf) but this file
doesn't exist in ASU

2 : How do I configure the gps application to store and use the maps on
a special directory (on the SD card for example)

3 : Is there a GUI available for Bluetooth pairing, ftp ?

4 : How do you configure which sound file to use for a ringtone ?

5 : Are there any calendar/tasks applications available ?

6 : Where do the many applications from this screenshot

I have one for you, how did you get it to be finally usable as a phone?

I mean what steps did you do, because I haven't found it usable yet!

1. Flash raster's image (found at
http://download.enlightenment.org/misc/) to NAND (couldn't get it to
work on the µSD) according to
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Flashing_the_Neo_FreeRunner. This image
has the wonderful keyboard.

2. Add zecke's testing repository : create a /etc/opkg/updates.conf
containing

src/gz daily-all-updates
http://people.openmoko.org/~zecke/om2008.8-testing/all
src/gz daily-armv4t-updates

src/gz daily-om-gta02-updates
http://people.openmoko.org/~zecke/om2008.8-testing/om-gta02

3. Get the network running, opkg update, opkg upgrade (for a while) and
you're good to go.

Either I did something wrong or we just have different usability demands :)
Can make/receive calls/sms. Suspends and wakes up fine, GPS working with
a SDCard inserted... I don't ask for much more at the moment.

Can't get the phone registered (ticket #1766)

2008-08-20 Thread julien cubizolles
There is at the moment a very nasty bug on the phone software of ASU and
FSO images.

Basically most of the time (more than 9 out of 10) you can't get the
phone registered after the PIN code is entered. This means you can't
make a call but strangely you can always receive calls.

Sometimes (quite often) you get registered after receiving a call and
receiving the call while in suspend mode seems to make you a little
luckier but maybe it's just wishful thinking. Some suggestions were made
(upgrade with http://people.openmoko.org/zecke/qtopia-testing feeds) but
didn't fix the problem.

I never add any problem regarding registration with 2007.2 and still
don't have any with the latest Qtopia image. I could stick with Qtopia
for the time being but would very much test ASU. Could it be possible to
somehow get from the Qtopia image the right files/packages/whatever to
just fix the telephony part ?

rather not type my very-long-passphrase on the keyboard. Is there a way
to do some copy-pasting to the right file (and which one is it) by ssh ?

I found it :

It's
/home/root/Applications/Network/config/wlan0.conf

You justneed to type you key as :1\PRIV_GENSTR=your_secret_key
and it works : I'm now connected.

I can give an wlan0.conf example if needed.

Too bad I don't have a minimo or something to try.

I've not properly measured how frequently it does it but for me it's
very often less than 5 seconds after it goes to suspend mode... Is there
a message in dmesg that indicates the waking is indeed due to
reregistration ? I have a log saved I could check.

Screen locking while in conversation

2008-07-19 Thread julien cubizolles
I think it would be a sane policy to prevent the screen from locking
during a conversation so that you don't need to unlock it just to hang
up. Don't you think ?

suspend and immediate wake-up

2008-07-18 Thread julien cubizolles
I' m experiencing some problems with the suspend mode, wich seems maybe
different from the ones related in the battery-problems thread, so I'm
starting a new thread.

Most of the time when I put the Freerunner in suspend mode (apm -s or
the sleep script from the wiki) it goes completely blank, as expected,
but wakes up immediately after (I didn't touch it of course). Therefore
the suspend-mode is useless to save power.

I checked that this happends only when the GSM antenna is on. I'm
running the mewster-andy kernel
(uImage_2008_07_16_gta02_73eeb0333fc771cb696ff9bf17c517c741434b59.bin).

Also, I'm confused about the so-called power-saving modes from the Power
Menu : regardless of the choice of dim+lock or dim-only, the Freerunner
always locks after some time.

Finally : is there a way to prevent the screen from locking when in a
conversation ? It's rather strange to have to unlock the screen to hang
up.

Julien.

A while back I have implemented a few improvements to the matchbox keyboard:

 - a different color scheme that is less stressful for the eye
 - popup to see what is currently pressed.

Very nice, I can't get the popup either. Will wait for a fix.

Flashing problems

2008-07-16 Thread julien cubizolles
I tried flashing my FreeRunner using the indications on
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Getting_Started_with_your_Neo_FreeRunner .
I tried scaredycat images and snapshots from OM2007.2.

The flashing itself seems to go fine but when I boot the new image, I
get many :

Empty flash at * ends at *

messages. Some googling seem to indicate it's no big deal but I'd like
some confirmation on that.

Also, the Freerunner was much slower with any image I tried so far than
with the factory one, upgraded through opkg. By slower I mean that the
kinematic scrolling is unusable, flashing from position to another
instead of smoothly moving. Is it somehow related ?
