In terms of attendance, the following people were able to make it:

* Nyeng-Yu 'Tony' Tu
* Jim 'jserv' Huang'
* Jollen Chen
* Wolfgang Spraul
* Holger Freyther

It was great to meet. Would have been even better to meet more of the
many people involved in both Openmoko the company as well as Openmoko
the FOSS project. But sure, for the westerners involved in the project,
the trip to Taiwan is simply too far. And of course many people have other

But your wider problem is that you're working in a vacuum, because
there's no reasonably widely used phone distribution that uses FSO and
that is also regularly and safely updated. That means you have no users

Does QTMoko not use FSO now? If yet then Radek has a pretty usable upper

We got several requests for the GTA04 installation service

from countries not within the EU. This makes customs processing
a little complex, because the owner has to send his GTA02 to us with
proper declaration and notes so that we don't have to pay incoming taxes.

Then, we do the installation and have to export a partial GTA02 plus a new
 GTA04 board.

This is not easily declared properly so that we do not risk that the device
gets stuck at customs. And, we have somehow to prove that the GTA02 is
the same as the one that was imported.

So I would like to ask if there are people in these countries who would
want to handle the installation service locally. We would send a GTA04
board to them, the GTA02 owner would send his GTA02 to them and
they would do the installation. And finally send the device back.

If you are trustworthy, and willing to do such upgrades, please contact me.

 Cristian,

With Professor Regis Rossi I made a video of his application Open
 Audience:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dVch2nSuBA

which used the Openmoko to control the sound channels of recorded sound
to place the listener inside the music.

If you had a number of microphones positioned in the sound scene, you
would move the listener throughout the placement of the microphones by
using the FreeRunner. It was a pretty cool application that would have
been difficult, if not impossible, to create as just a layered
application without changing the underlying OS.

Here is a fun video I made while running Debian on the FreeRunner:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGjzm6hzXaAfeature=related

I pretended I was a Systems Administrator on vacation, and indicated
that from my FreeRunner running Debian I could have access to many, if
not all, of the tools that I would use on my notebook and workstation,
therefore fix a lot of problems.

You are welcome to point to the videos, or even copy them and distribute
 them.

*Please fwd to SHR developer list also*

 2) This weekend I am going to make a questionnaire for the SHR core team
asking questions about the history of SHR (how it came to be, who were the
key people in the begining etc), who all are working on it currently and
what all are they contributing, what technologies and toolkits SHR uses and
supports, Why SHR should be used, What are the future plans and new targeted
platforms, What help do they need, What contributions the community can make
etc. I will post the questionnaire on these mailing lists and maybe the
SHR-devloper list too. Once the answers are there maybe some of you with
bolgs can edit and make an article for your blogs/ for sending to magazines
 for publication.

Ok so I have my list of questions for SHR people. Please feel free to add
questions and if you know answers please answer! (I know a most of the
answers are on the two wikis. I am just trying to consolidate and update
them so we can easily write about SHR :) I am hoping the consolidated
answers will be moved to a wiki page soon

1. What is SHR?

2. Can you tell a bit about the history of SHR? Why was the development of
SHR started? What were the aims and objectives?

3. What are the target platforms for SHR? Does SHR target only
Openmokophones or is it designed as a generic mobile communication/
PDA solution?

4. How does the development process of SHR work ( As in who/ who all decide
what is to be doe at what priority)?

5. Who are the main developers working on SHR? What are their areas of
interest wrt SHR and what are they working on these days?

6. How far has the development of SHR progressed? Is the current SHR image
usable out of the box?

7. Can you explain the structure of SHR (as in kernel, middleawre windows
manager, data storage structure, application layer etc)?

8. If a S/W developer wishes to contribute to SHR what should she/ he do?
Does she/ he need to have any specific skill sets to contribute to SHR?

9. How does a developer make sure her/ his application runs on SHR. Is there
any centralised verification process or a repository where verified
applications are stored?

10. Can you list the main areas where you would appreciate help in the
SHRdevelopment process and are looking for volunteers.

11. What is the relationship of SHR with FSO ( A bit about FSO too).
Is SHRan user interface on top of
FSO or does it offer something more?

12. Can someone highlight the Short term, medium term and long term benefits
of using SHR to Hardware hackers and hardware manufacturers?

13. What milestones does SHR hope to hit in 2010?

13. Where do I find all the code and documentation for SHR?

14. When will SHR/ Stable be available :)

Also we already have 9 SHR Stable release parties listed. Please list your
local party or your attendance to a party on the wiki page.

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/SHR_Party_Page

If you are not registered on the wiki to edit mail me directly and I will
add your entry. Number of other announcements for the SHR parties will be

Re: gta02-core (was Re: OM future)

2010-02-25 Thread rakshat hooja
internet. need i say more. as such its actually used here in australia, and
 in
japan, and korea, and the usa, etc. - people really do use phones for
 looking
up stuff, maps (yes downloading the maps as you go), blogging, instant
messaging and email - oh god email. sure - video calls, tv etc. are pretty
 moot
 - but the other things definitely use 3g - there is a big difference
 between 2g
and 3g for speed when it comes to loading web pages. not to mention
 cost-wise -
2g and 3g get priced differently with 3g being much much much cheaper for
 data
in au than 2g generally (cheapest telco for data is 3 and they are 3g only
 - 2g
data rates are just silly. 3g data is cheap).

but - u'd need a phone that actually uses such things nicely and still most
people dont have one. you'd need an iphone, modern android or palm webos
 device
for this to really work. then it becomes a different game as your phone can
make use of all that data...

Lets take the desktop analogy further I use a 2004 Tosiba laptop with a
celeron processor (ubuntu ) as my main laptop still. 6 years down the line
the modern internet runs perfectly on it (modern games pretty much don't
:). Firefox renders pretty much everything, Java works, maps, banking,
server hosted apps, social networking sites; everything really does work.

Now I have two employees in my 3 people company and both my employees have
had their laptops upgraded (at my cost). One has a fancy HP with one of the
latest intel processors and the other a macbook. Did they really need these
upgardes to use the modern evolving web? No. But they definitely felt that
they needed the latest hardware to be productive in their work.

Why am i mentioning all these anecdotes. Because I feel that they highlight
the fact that people will always want the latest and fanciest hardware they
can afford but at the sametime its just BS to say you need the latest
hardware to run the evolving internet. Snapdragon is cool but the 233 MHz
samsung in the Neo 1973 is still more than capable of handling anything the
mobile internet has thrown up till now (if designed properly - like raster
is right about the qvga screen in the OM phones).

I do buy the 3G module and lisense cost issues and till date I don't see how
this can be worked around for a fully open phone.

Anyway Qi's roadmap does say Open Phone in 2012

http://en.qi-hardware.com/wiki/Roadmap

So we continue to dream :)

Advance planning for SHR-Stable release party :)

2010-02-12 Thread rakshat hooja
I am not very sure when SHR Stable will be released (I assume in the next 2
months) but it would be great if we could plan small SHR stable release
parties across the world. Basically these would be SHR and other OM distro
users (and interested friends and family) getting together for a drink and
some food (and accompanieng geek talk/ distro wars/ show off my
customizations are cooler than yours etc) to celebrate the SHR Stable
release.

I would be willing to host a party in New Delhi, India

Also if there is enough interest we could start a wiki page to coordinate
this.

hehe, given that we don't have an shr-stable manager, I see little hope
for this at the moment. I am currently in the process of updating
shr-testing in a new branch, and when that is pushed out, I will
basically rename shr/testing2009 to shr/stable. However, I will not be
able to make sure that any upgrades from one stable to the next stable
will work, I simply don't have the time (or motivation) for that.

 spaetz

When you rename it SHR/stable SHR Stable would have been released and we can
have our celebrations :) Nomenclatures matter! And from your mail I infer
there will be a next stable release also :) Thanks for the great work you
are doing.

PS - So are we looking at a Feb or March renaming or testing to stable?

example, but I'm more interested in a web-site for end-users. Also it
might include hardware that is not itself open source, but where the
company states a clear commitment to Free Software principles.

I.e. a site that links to things like Openmoko, Qi, AlwaysInnovating,
 maybe Lemote, OpenPandora, ...

 Any hint?

Some days SHR-U is very stable and sometimes it is not as all the latest

downgrading+upgrading+force overwriting some stuff etc but for a newcommer
to SHR testing build that has atleast gsm+gps working on 2nd boot is
required so that he/she atleast gets a chance to experience SHR instead of

Thats what I havr been trying for the last few days. For SHR one needs to

Hi Petr,

I am aware of the changes happening in SHR. One of the reasons for starting
the manual now is that getting a structure in place and having all existing
information in one place is very tough, making changes to smaller sections
is easier. The way I look at it is we have the manual in a new manuals
section on the wiki and regularly take snapshots in PDF and open doc formats
that are up to date with the current release. Also this way we will have a
manual ready when SHR stable is released and not start writing a manual
then.

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Call_Recorder

by Tom

and

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Dictator

by Matthias

Both fulfilled enough requirements and worked well (there were problems with
different distros but with FSO based SHR testing they were ok).

The person I asked to judge the softwares (Shakti Singh) liked Dictator for
its user interface and call recorder for its implementation of splitting the
incomming and outgoing voice into different channels.

He has decided to declare both the submissions as joint winners and the
prize money being divided among the two. Shakti suggested that the leather
case be given to Tom as his solution worked straight out of the box while
Matthias solution now fully functional with the second revision.

I would request all of you to try the applications and provide feedback to
the authors (or enhance them yourselves as the are open licensed)

Also I would like to thank Tom and Matthias for the excellent applications
they have written. This was a much sought after feature request on the
Freerunner.

Thanks

Rakshat

Next cofundus OM competition idea

2009-05-08 Thread rakshat hooja
I was wondering if FR could function as a fax client so one could send text
and picture files directly to fax numbers and if there is any interest in
such an application. If there is some interest I will set this up as the
next OM software comp on cofundus.

How about a telephony suite that actually works? :)

I agree this is very important (though I am quite happy with SHR testing
(16th april)- calls and sms and gprs for browsing work perfectly) I dont
think a small cofundus project is an answer for this. SHR, OM 2009, QTEI,
Android, FYP, Hackable 1 + some I am missing are all trying to get there. I
still dont think we will have a fully functional telephoney stack before the
4th quarter of 2009. My idea is to have a large nummber of stable and
interesting apps avaialble when stable telephony arrives on the FR. So I am
looking at smaller projects - those that can be done in a month by one
person.

Rakshat

As much as I despise (sorry folks, too slow and doesn't quite cut it) the
qtopia suite, it's still the one that works best...

buzzfix in India

2009-04-30 Thread rakshat hooja
As some of the Indian Openmoko Users may be aware we have been working with
Openmoko to provide you with a Buzz Fix solution to the Freerunner.

IDA Systems (with support from Openmoko) will cover the actual costs of the
buzz fix procedure and the components. Shipping costs (to and back from)
Delhi, where the contracter who will undertake the Buzz Fix is based, will
have to be borne by the customer (We will work with you to get good and easy
shipping options and also give a free extra Battery as a return gift with
each Freerunner sent for the Buzz Fix to cover costs)

More details will be put up on our site soon but currently we need your help
to estimate the number of customers who would like to have the buzz fix
procedure on their phones.

I would be grateful if those who are interested in the buzz fix could
email *buzz...@idasystems.net* with their

NAME

ADDRESS

IMEI number of their phone (open back battery cover to see the IMEI number)

EMAIL ADDRESS

We hope the have the buzzfix program underway soon and thank you for your
support.

PS - we will be contacting customers individually also later but if those
who are on the list can reply it will help us to get an approximate of the

Just use timestamped recordings and correlate those later against GPS
data. If you to ask the GPS for the current location you get
lower/unpredictable precision (important if you are moving fast in a
car for example) and you can not use external GPS device not connected to
 the phone at all.

Right now I have a proof of concept - but it's not controllable since I
can't see the window with the controls. Otherwise I can see video in the

I thought it would be far worse.

Hopefully, someone out there can help. Thanks.

Do you think it will be possible (and simpler) to have the controls come up
as a transparent layer/app on top of the playing video (like on tapping).
Why I thought of this is that sometime ago a transparent illume terminal/
keyboard thread was there on the list and the package worked. I will try to
look in the archives for the link.

Re: Openmoko toolchain error

2009-03-20 Thread rakshat hooja
After re looking at the wiki (thanks to Jozef's suggestion) I used the
unofficial libtool. That problem seems to be solved

Now i have the following error (full log attached)

/usr/lib/libmokoui2.so: could not read symbols: File in wrong format
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [openmoko-sample] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/shakti/openmoko-sample2/src'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/shakti/openmoko-sample2'
make: *** [all] Error 2

If i understand this correctly my libmokoui2-dev package may be corrupted?
Should i download this also from another source?

Thanks for your help

 Hi,
I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and I followed the instructions at -
 http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Toolchain
Everything works fine up till the 'Building the sample application
segment'. I tried to run as root as well but I was unable to build it. The
log is attached for both attempts.

Path to the toolchain is giving problems. Are you sure that openmoko
toolchain is present and all the required headers and libraries are where
they should be. Did the opkg-target update work? If it did work then its
 something else.

I use the toolchains alot on Ubunut 8.10 and 8.04 and I never had such a
problem although never tried the sample application :)

 Thanks in advance

Right now I have fltk-chess installed, but it is not finger-friendly

  I've been happy with Xboard.
