ASU 2008.08 image

2008-08-07 Thread simarillion
I'm a little bit confused.

On the devel List I read that the real ASU image has a black Wallpaper. But
where can I download it?

I downloaded this one

http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily/freerunner/200808/20080807/openmoko-openmoko-qtopia-x11-image-glibc-ipk--20080807-om-gta02.rootfs.jffs2

but it has the wallpaper of the FSO image and the nice qwerty button at the
top left. Which image is this, SHR ?

 Jeff Tickle wrote:
  Hey all,

I just installed the ASU daily build from buildhost yesterday (23 Jul),
and there doesn't seem to be an on-screen keyboard.

I've been doing a lot of searching around to find out what's up with
the keyboard. I know that it was added as a 'qwerty' button, and then
removed because the devs want it to automatically appear when there's
text to enter and automatically disappear appropriately. I'd
personally prefer the manual mode, but I can understand why someone
  would want this done automatically.

Problem for me is that the keyboard never automatically pops up. I
know this isn't an isolated incident, as this bug report exists:
  http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1663

Of course there's a mention of using some ASU image from
  downloads.openmoko.org instead of buildhost.openmoko.org, but I can't
find anything ASU-related after sometime in May on the downloads site.

I had the same issue, the problem is that buildhost isn't building ASU
packages from the ASU dev git tree (I'd guess because it's mostly aimed
at people running 2007.02). What you need to do is change your opkg
 feeds to use http://downloads.openmoko.org/openmoko-repository/ASU/
which has all the new packages (including an updated version of qpe with
keyboard support enabled). You can download the correct config files from:

 http://www.mikeasoft.com/~mike/opkg-asu.tar.gz

Just move /etc/opkg to /etc/opkg-backup then unpack that to /etc,
then: opkg update opkg upgrade /etc/init.d/xserver-nodm restart

The keyboard should now pop up automatically when text areas request it.

  I tried editing the
  file /usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes/illume.edj and setting
'visible: 1' under the 'part { name: kbdtext' section, but that
caused the whole UI to be useless (looks like this file is some sort of
compiled binary, I couldn't find any information on it.)

So, in short: what is up with the keyboard?

You can grab an illume theme with the qwerty button restored from:

 http://www.mikeasoft.com/~mike/illume.edj

Just drop that in to /usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes/ (note that
you'll need to overwrite it again each time illume-theme is updated
 though).

   Cheers,
Mike.

German getting started

2008-07-09 Thread simarillion
Hi,

we (until now 4 people) started at docs.google.com (where multiple people can
edit the same document) a german (until now quick dirty) getting started
document. This document is not meant to be a copy of
http://quickstart.openmoko.org/ and does not want to compete with the official
Wiki. Far from it! It can be used to make remarks and notes while playing
around with the freerunner without to care about the sentence structure and
100% accuracy. From time to time the content should get higher quality and be

transeferred to the wiki (in german and english), this can be done by anybody
(even without FR for example while waiting for it ;-) ), because the document
is public on  http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dnjszzj_0dzkbrncr and will be
updated automatically.
If someone wants to  edit the document and help us just write me a short mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll invite you.

I think this Dokument helps to speed up the wiki (new pages as well as
untranslated to german) and will become a good and printable getting started
for new FR owners who perhaps can't speak english.

still got my om, but anyway ...
i think what it means is the following:
while booting into NAND you are accessing the area which is to be flashed
-- thus flashing while in NAND will remove the ground under your feet.
when in NOR every area possibly to be flashed is guaranteed to be free of
any other access than the flash utility.
sink of it like sawing off a branch while sitting on a tree -- where would

Re: Europe Distribution

2008-05-23 Thread simarillion
I think the question was, if trisoft customers will get their phone later than
pulster customers, because trisoft is not an OFFICIAL PARTNER ?

In this case I don't think preorders are unserious, because the vendors can
make a better calculation and for me as customer it's just more comfortable
as I don't have to check my mails every day and do not miss the release.

I know that preorders are not good for competition between pulster and

research project topic

2008-04-25 Thread simarillion
Hi community,

I'm studying electrical engineering at Karlsruhe University in Germany and I
nearly finished.
Now I have to do a student research project and because I'm a big fan of the
openmoko/freerunner project I want to combine this. I've got an offer from an
Institude to do something like that. I must give them a topic that must
contain research and the GPS. Now is the question, what research with the
freerunner and it's GPS device can I do that would help the openmoko
community and seems to be something that institute would support. It should
not be only writing a gui or something like that.
I have got to improve, develop, add or optimize something. This project should
last between 3 and 6 months. I'am also trying hard to be allowed to give my
research solution back to the community, as kind of code or information.

I'm looking forward to free my phone
and support the project

All the best,
