 f64f5ff2e7dad0202e7cb69d263d006d uImage-v5.bin

Most important changes in V5 version include:

 * much better support for X applications

 * X is not starting during boot which makes Qtopia faster

 * short AUX press brings up menu while running X application

 * X application stopping should be now correct (first SIGTERM and if no
   response then SIGKILL)

 * included TangoGPS, xterm with matchbox virtual keyboard and
   matchbox window manager.

 * scripts for turning on/off bluetooth, wifi, gps and for switching USB
between host and device (available from dev tools menu)

Most probably no bugs were introduced and this version should be stable
 as daily phone.

There can be still problem with no sound on incoming call. The only
workaround i know is to make outgoing call after boot (e.g. to some cost
free number) and all incoming calls will be ok after that.

With X application support you can now use TangoGPS for mapping, links2
for web browsing, you can play doom, tons of games in scummvm - the
 possibilities are nearly endless.

You can also switch to USB host and attach USB keyboard which will work
 for X applications.

For more information please visit links [1] [2] [3] [4].

The support for X applications still needs some more work. I would
appreciate if someone could help me understand why X server cannot be
started from within Qtopia. It always hangs in VT_WAITACTIVE. I am now
solving this with simple helper program [5] that starts before Qtopia.
To me it looks that Qtopia takes over virtual terminal and when X tries
to allocate it - it hangs. So this needs clean solution and understanding
the problem. Any help would be very welcome.

In next days I will be on holidays on my bike so i will get to mail on
 Monday.

Enjoy images, hope you will like them

Hi Radek,

now that you are back from holidays, i'm sorry to disturb you with bugs.
first of all, my freerunner is new, i only tried shr, and when v5 of qtmoko
was released and my phone just returned from buzz fixing, i thought i would
install it. i must say i am very impressed. it just feels like a phone and
is pretty much fun to play around with. especially the contacts/sms/etc
thingy is really good. And it feels stable.

however, there are a few glitches.
* Alarm doesnt start, when the phone is suspended. it just starts a few
seconds after manually resuming the phone.

* Wifi doesnt work. It just doesnt connect.

* sms longer then 160 characters are sent succesfully and received by the
other phone. However, sending such a sms to qtmoko doesn't work somehow. it
only gets received after a reboot.

* The phone shouldnt suspend when e.g. trying to connect to wifi or in gps
mode.

* Bluetooth worked, somehow. i activated BT, was able to receive and send
files, but then it suspended before i couldnt turn BT off again - after
that, the bt config dialog told me, that bt would not be availible.

Furthermore i would like to ask a few questions/for feature requests.

i know the keyboard debate is getting old. but i always wondered why would
couldnt have a keyboard just like a usual phone, like the keyboard which is
used at pin input (like this one here: http://lwn.net/images/qpe/call_sm.png
) with some corrective mechanism as the illume keyboards of shr do (for
writing sms at least).

and i really really would appreciate a small lightweight jabber client and a
SIP client.

Thanks for your efforts!

Hi,
yes, this is another known issue (with quite high priority) on my list.
FSO based images used ffalarms and atd for alarm. I need to investigate
how to install and make it work on debian. So this is rather
unimplemented feature that bug.

 * Wifi doesnt work. It just doesnt connect.

another known one probably trivial bug. You can use terminal and use
iwconfig as a workaround for now.

 * sms longer then 160 characters are sent succesfully and received by the
other phone. However, sending such a sms to qtmoko doesn't work somehow. it

This is interesting - i just tested it and got a bit different but still
incorrect behaviour. I recieved just the first part of SMS. So i can at
least somehow reproduce it and take a look.

 * The phone shouldnt suspend when e.g. trying to connect to wifi or in gps
 mode.

If you run tangogps using QX then it shouldnt go to suspend. I will
implement it also for other apps launched from QX - this should be quite
simple. I dont know how hard would it be to do it in wifi dialog and in
other places where it's needed.

 * Bluetooth worked, somehow. i activated BT, was able to receive and send
files, but then it suspended before i couldnt turn BT off again - after
that, the bt config dialog told me, that bt would not be availible.

Yes, i know this issue too. Didnt have time to take a look at it yet.
Reboot solves it for now.

Furthermore i would like to ask a few questions/for feature requests.

I am not happy with any virtual keyboard too - so if none else comes
with solution i will work on this when time comes.

Me too :)

Tested basic functionalities. SMS, Calls works fine.Yes can be used as
a daily phone.

Bluetooth is present. I didn't have another phone with bluetooth atm,
so don't know if that would work, but atleast the options show up ;)

Some issues though:

* On first boot, when i pressed the dialer button on the homescreen,
QtMoko crashed and went blank with only a cursor blinking at the
top-left corner. I was hoping for it to do a restart of QtMoko, but
even after a few minutes it didn't respond so i had to remove the
battery. On next boot this didn't occur.
Next time maybe i'll get time to catch some logs.

* Tango GPS opened fine, (I couldn't test the GPS as i know i'll not
get a fix inside the building, i'll test it later in the day) but
after closing there is a cursor on the bottom-left corner of the
QtMoko, but that is just a aesthetic requirement.

Thank you Radek, a great amount of work has gone into making this
build. I must say it's been shaping out nicely!
Personally Qtmoko is an awesome distribution and that's what i use as
daily phone.. with support for TangoGPS, it'll give rise to a whole
new level of (healthy) competition to the other distros!
Great work keep it up!!

Yes, this is known problem. Must be something missing in debian rootfs

  6. Font... Terminal font is not just inappropriate. It is antialiased

Yup i also noticed that the cursor position is not correct.

I am working in my spare time (so it's not very much). I am planning
possibility to run X apps. If that works out we will get a lot of
applications. I will fix all regressions, but probably not enough time
to fix all bugs. I see the future quite bright. We are regulary
importing new QT releases so QtMoko will keep to be easy-to-develop
 platform for QT applications.

  2. About using truetype fonts. As we have such a... slow hardware might
it be better to use bitmap fonts? Any time I see that antialiasing,
imagine that hinting, kerning and so. Anyone tried to measure impact of

Would be nice to see the results.

I just found the problem. The slow thing is that qpe process writes
debugging messages to stderr. These debug messages should be redirected
to logger program or as temporary solution to /dev/null.

So if you want to have fast debian QtMoko then edit /etc/rc.local and
replace line

qpe

with

qpe 2/dev/null

This will be fixed in next version.

It's possible to run qtopia phone apps on X-server (Om2008 does it). I've
been trying to compile those to run them on Om2009 or SHR, but without luck.

Thank you much for images, they bring some hope to me.

After SHR installation I start to believe that openmoko can be used, and
at some point I'll able to use phone with familiar environments, but
came to conclusion that it's true that e should be used only in 320x200.

Now I've just started the QtMoko and speed was nice surprise. Almost
everything is working amazingly fast. Python and other interpreted
laguages is real nasty thing - while allowing code a bit faster, they
always intoduce that lag. Even 10ms and 50ms of difference is
noticeable, no need to speak about FreerRunner.

Problems I noticed so far:

1. Booting with Qi fails somehow. Last and only thing i see
[21474549.34] INFO: RCU detected CPU 0 stall (t=4294909868/2000
jiffies). NOR uboot is fine, i seen same message but INIT:... after
that.

2. I see kernel backtraces near that message:
(see attachment)

3. It hungs for me several times while I was trying to setup network -
wifi and other types.

4. I can't setup GPRS. Is it a problem with me or with QtMoko? I got qpe
hung with high cpu load then I am trying to connect. GPRS works fine for
me in SHR. Did someone try it?

5. Bug in voice notes application - if you remove record while listening
it, audio device will be clocked be blocked until pkill -9 that
application. It's easy to click one more time.

6. Font... Terminal font is not just inappropriate. It is antialiased
non-monospace truetype font, without possibility to change it. So all
sort of problems where.

Also, please can you answer some question:

1. Do QtExtened have a future?

2. About using truetype fonts. As we have such a... slow hardware might
it be better to use bitmap fonts? Any time I see that antialiasing,
imagine that hinting, kerning and so. Anyone tried to measure impact of
font rendering system on performance?

BTW, Really, i never can imagine that vim require 25MB :) And also found
out which ui inspired creators of original openmoko gtk stack. User have
to know meaning of all that icons :)

Gennady.

Hmm, this reminds me of the Neovento-kernel. Never had this message with
the qtmoko one. Are you sure the kernel is the right one? Btw: I have it
running from SD-card w/o problems. Since I discovered that one can use
the Aux-button in Qi to switch between different installations, I'm a
happy camper.

Hi Fabio,
i must have done something wrong previously (either bad merge or build).
I have merged and rebuilt all again from scratch and now i have no
problem with incoming calls anymore. So i am pushing now to github and
my master is now based on QT 4.5.1 and with all others changes.

Just one question is open for me. I see that libmad is now build by
default, but i am not sure if it is ok to distribute such images
because of patent issues. That's why also why i distribute qmplayer
without mplayer binary. So i can either remove libmad before i make
new release (no problem for me) - or is there any better way how to
handle this patent crap stuff?

I will be now testing the new code and if i find no problems i will do
new release.

 Hi Guys,
i have created new QtMoko images on debian rootfs. You can find them
together with some info on my site [1].

 These images should give you:
 - full debian system (over ssh)
 - working calls/sms
 - working gprs
 - usable media player
 - and lot of more features

In this new image QT was upgraded to version 4.5.1 and with attached
patch i have fixed the missing virtual keyboard in password fields. You
can find sources in my git branch qt451.

Another thing is qmplayer - media player that can play ogg/mp3/avi files
but is also able to download or stream media from PC. You can find more
 info on qmplayer homepage [2].

Kernel is now based on packaging config. The kernel size is now under
2MB so it can be booted with u-boot.

We have also new logo [3] (thanks to my wife).

My plan for future is to merge other's GIT's - i am running build right
now, so we'll see if that worked :)

On the experimenting front - i was able to run TangoGPS and other X apps
via vnc. It was quite slow and mouse dragging wanst working, but still
 quite usable.

Btw is anyone planning to release ready-to-flash QtMoko images for FSO?
I see there is just install script, but i would like to have image that
can be just flashed and booted.

 Cheers

 Radek

  Hi Guys,
i have created new QtMoko images on debian rootfs. You can find them
together with some info on my site [1].

  These images should give you:
  - full debian system (over ssh)
  - working calls/sms
  - working gprs
  - usable media player
  - and lot of more features

In this new image QT was upgraded to version 4.5.1 and with attached
patch i have fixed the missing virtual keyboard in password fields. You
can find sources in my git branch qt451.
Cool, I'm going to merge from you :)

 Yes, working on;)
  Cheers

Thank you Radek. This is awesome! I just installed it now.

However, there seems to be an issue with apt-get.

This seems to be a known problem though--

Do you know anything about this?

Hi Rene,
yes i know about it - it's present only on jffs images - SD card images
do not have this problem. I'll try to find best solution of this.

2009-06-10 Thread Ali
Very cool, but without apt it's kinda useless :( I saw on the site that
if we mount the apt directories to the sd card it will be fine, so which
directories does apt use? I browsed through the apt howto but I don't
think they mention all the directories used by apt or at least it's not
on one page. Also, I didn't see libmad as a plugin, so no out of box mp3
support? Does this mean I still have to compile it in myself? Or because
it's debian can I apt-get it and have qte play them?
