If you mean the misspelling of unalbe then the page was already
 moved some days ago:

 http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/FreeRunner_unable_to_work_with_3G_SIM_cards

If you're accessing the page via the misspelled link (as quoted in
your post above) then the page simply redirects to the
 correctly-spelled URL.

On my browser the misspelling persists in the browser's address bar,
but if you click on the edit link then you'll see that you're
editing the correctly-spelled version of the page (and if, from the
edit page you click on the page tab then it takes you back to the
 correctly-spelled URL).

currently it seems that old gemplus sim-cards have this issue, but we need
more people with and without problems to submit pictures of the contact-side

the only universal way we currently have to identify which manufacturer and
model the sim really is, is to have a scan/sharp photo.
the numbers on it are not unified and thus cannot be universally used to
look up which type it is.
also carriers tend to have multiple types of sim in use over the years and
also switch manufacturers from time to time.

This is vital for solving those cases where folks have problems and

also would be nice to have some comment about which carrier, and when it was

but thats 'cream on top', not essential, since this is a carrier-independant

ps: because it seems a often asked question:
the numbers of the sim are not directly 'secret' or need to be kept
 confidential.
one cannot clone or locate your sim/phone with knowledge of these.
only the carrier who gave the sim out could identify or duplicate the sim,
and would not need the numbers on the original for that because that
information which one could look up is in their databases already.
so no harm done by having them in a photo.

sharp, contact side. label the file as 'sim working' or 'sim notworking'
and attach it to this ticket in the wiki.

also would be nice to have some comment about which carrier, and when it
was given out, if you think its a '3g sim' and, if you want, the numbers
 on it.
but thats 'cream on top', not essential, since this is a
 carrier-independant problem it seems.

 kind regards.

ps: because it seems a often asked question:
the numbers of the sim are not directly 'secret' or need to be kept
 confidential.
one cannot clone or locate your sim/phone with knowledge of these.
only the carrier who gave the sim out could identify or duplicate the
sim, and would not need the numbers on the original for that because
that information which one could look up is in their databases already.
so no harm done by having them in a photo.

Since germany is an important market for us, Perhaps we should create a page
on the wiki
Listing the carriers in Germany and the success/no success users have had in
making
Old SIMs versus new SIMS work.

it wants the SIM PIN. Normally this means your PIN was not correct. If you

Re: freerunner unable to work with 3G SIMCards?

2008-07-10 Thread David Roetzel
Hi,

ps: i have photos of the 'tricky' O2 sim, so if youre unsure or find
yours does the same, we should be able to identify the manufacturer by a
nice high-res shot of the 'chip' (the layout of the pads is somehow
 'characteristic')

I have uploaded photos of my O2 sim that shows the exact same behaviour
as Kevin's to the ticket in Trac:
http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/666

Maybe that could serve as a starting point to figure out if there is
some visible feature to spot problematic cards.

Kind regards

with the 1.8V sim cards then.
too bad the one i tested has no voltage printed on (some sims have, this
sadly doesnt). will try to find out next time i get near that sim.

My German Blau SIM (On the back it says, amongst other things, 3V -
does that mean volts?) does NOT work on my new GTA02, despite what is
on http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Carriers

One colleague's Dutch Orange SIM did work, but two other German
Vodafone SIMs did not.

One German and one Dutch T-Mobile SIM did not work, but a German
Debitel (T-Mobile
reseller) did.

Nor did a 1 year old German O2 SIM.

What new prepaid German SIMs are known to work? i.e. which prepaid
German SIM that I can buy today will work in the FR?

On the back of my Blau SIM there are two rows of alphanumerics:

xx-xxx-xx-x xx
16K 3V #343 H73

I assume 16K is the storage capacity of the SIM and 3V the voltage.
Any ideas what the rest means?

Are there any security implications about sharing the top row of
numbers in full? Would it be useful?

Perhaps we can work out some way of telling from the info stamped on a
SIM whether it will work in the FR or not.

Tried 4 more German SIMs - none of the them worked:

 D2 Mannesmann (7 years old)
 Vodafone
 O2
 T-D1 (T-Mobile)

 I don't see any pattern.

Who has a German SIM working in their FR?

Yes, I have two, both work fine:
 - D1 T-Mobile (from mobilcom) ~1year old
 - E-PLUS SIMYO ~1month ol
Can you please post what's written on the simyo one?
I've got a new simyo card too and it claims to be 1.8V, but i don't have a
freerunner to test it and i can't justify buying one if it's likely that it
 won't work

second line of the text on my sim reads 72K 1.8V #569 J276

Sure. 72K 3V #568 H276. I ordered the card mid Juni 2008 and it was
shipped June, 20 to be exact :)

hey there

i've done a few quick tests with a borrowed O2 3G-sim and ran into the
same problem.
BUT since this sim is from a gsm-geek we quickly tested a few things:
this sim had the pin set to 'off' (not asking, just do register) and the
FSO milestone1 which i used for testing still was asking me for a pin.
obviously the previously used pin was not accepted.
then we put the sim into another phone, set the pin from 'off' to ''
and swapped it back to the FR.
after booting FSO asked for a pin again, and this time it took the
and registered fine. a quick call worked fine from that point on.

so: if your O2 3g sim does not want your (supposedly correct) pin, check
if the pin is really needed with a second phone, and if not, set it to
 or so.
if this works for more people than just me, we might just have found a
workaround.

ps: i have photos of the 'tricky' O2 sim, so if youre unsure or find
yours does the same, we should be able to identify the manufacturer by a
nice high-res shot of the 'chip' (the layout of the pads is somehow

Hmm, unfortunately didn't work for me :(
Disabling the pin entry altogether on a 2nd phone resulted in the GTA02
(@2007.02-rootfs) not asking for a pin but not registering either - so I
suspect it doesn't really have anything to do with the pin but is more
of an overall communications problem.
Setting the pin to on the 2nd phone didn't work, either - the pin
entry dialog appeared on the OM, but didn't accept the pin and even
thought the sim was locked after the 3rd failed attempt (which was not
the case when testing the sim in the 2nd phone after that).
Any more ideas?

But, regarding to shwan lin's report, you can see that the sim isn't
working correct because of the wrong voltage with the command AT
+CFUN=1 with an responding ERROR. If there's an OK respond, it will
work. As in my last mails reported, there is an OK as a response of AT
+CFUN. So in my judgement the voltage isn't the problem. Or did I
understood something totally wrong? Maybe this sorts of sim cards have
more differences than only the voltage?
Is there a way to find out the voltage with a multimeter or something
else?
On my card isn't printed something, too.

Really, that can't be a solution.

BTW.: I tested a sim card from a friend and it worked. It was an 9 YEAR old
simcard (G2)!
His provider is vodafone, but the sim card is so old, that there is an D2
Mannesmann logo on it (an provider, that doesn't exist anymore).

But no o2 card seems to work (in the meantime, I have test a 3rd o2 card in

Actually if you look at your AT output, you're now getting error 32
which is Network not allowed, emergency calls only. I'm no gsm
expert, but my first thought is that O2 didn't activate the new sim
card. Try the new sim card in a different phone? Or double check
with O2 that the new sim card has been activated.

Good theory - Ian, didn't we have this problem with your SIM card at
 SCALE?

I've used prepaid SIM cards with good results - I always test in the

Really, that can't be a solution.

BTW.: I tested a sim card from a friend and it worked. It was an 9 YEAR old
 simcard (G2)!
His provider is vodafone, but the sim card is so old, that there is an D2
Mannesmann logo on it (an provider, that doesn't exist anymore).

But no o2 card seems to work (in the meantime, I have test a 3rd o2 card in
my phone from another person, all three are g3).

I get my new SIM today per post and it works fine. But I have to say- an

decembre 07 - not so old), 100% working card (working on other phone). I
haven't test it in the new one in the command line, because it's not

RE: freerunner unable to work with 3G SIMCards?

2008-07-05 Thread steve
Arne,

The problem looks like this. Lets say you are ATT and you field a new
SIM. Your test team will test
It against a pile of of old phones they have and the new ones they are
shipping. They cant test it
In future phones that don't exist. So, new phone and old SIM is not a 100%
solution. Further,
I cant test all the old ATT SIM. I simply don't have access to them. When
Michael ATT SIM didn't work
We had two theories. First was that Michael lived in an area that used to be
Cingular and that ATT had taken
Over from Cingular, perhaps causing some issues. The second theory. I had
friends who got iPhones and had to have
Their SIM updated. So, once michael got a new SIM the problems went away.

In general minicom is your friend. Reenable the PIN on your simcard.
  execute
AT to see if the modem responds to you (kill other users if not), reset
  using
  sysfs files if needed.
Once you get OK on an AT request do:
  AT+CFUN=1
  AT+CPIN?

it should ask for SIM PIN..

  AT+CPIN=YOURPIN
  AT+CPIN?

it should say it is ready..

  AT+CREG=1
  AT+COPS=0

you should see +CREG coming by.

alternatively if you have qpe installed. You can go
to /opt/Qtopia/etc/default/Trolltech/Log.conf change all Enabled = 0 to
Enabled = 1. Kill the qpe process, take a look
at /etc/X11/XSession.d/89qtopia, copy the two exports to your console, run
qpe and take a look at the chat qpe has with the modem.

please share your results and if you don't know what I'm talking about ask.

Most probably. I am waiting for one too and will use it with a SIM card from
SIMYO. It's a prepaid card, they charge for 1MB data 24 Cent and use the
e-plus network. I guess a few people with a freerunner have such a card as
most other offers for data is more expensive.

I have testes the non-3G e-plus SIM card form my girlfirend and it
works. i think the problem is with the 3G sim cards only, not with the
normal 2,5G Standartd-cards. or with some of the 3G-cards. really, i
have no idea. in germany it is now around 9:00 AM so i will go to a
phone-shop now and ask there. i would have no problem with changing the
network, but the problem is that i would have to wait for a half year
until my actually contract get off (or what is the english word for
that?) and thats absoulutely too long, because i don't want to change my
telephone number. so the only option is finding the bug? or getting a
working SIM Card.

If your card is more than a few months old it would be very interesting
to try a new card on the very same contract. Would the provider be

A new card worked for me at one point. It's not a solution, but rather,
a test.

It is an indication that some firmware somewhere changed, and that the
Freerunner doesn't handle it correctly.

I look forward to hearing from you the result of this test.

Sincerely,
Michael

Re: freerunner unable to work with 3G SIMCards?

2008-07-03 Thread David Roetzel
Hi,

Do we have any other Freerunners who are e-plus customers in Germany?

I do not have a Freerunner (yet) but I have experienced similar
problems with my Neo1973 with latest GSM firmware. Since the GSM-part
did not change, I guess it is the same problem.

I have both an e-plus and an O2 sim card that cause trouble. Both cards
are 3G and look strikingly similar, except the provider logo of course.

There seem to be quite a bit of 3G sim cards in circulation that still
do not work. That is why the infamous bug 666
(http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/666) has not been closed yet.

At least this is not a problem restricted to Openmoko: A friend told me
about a colleague from work who had to replace his sim card twice to
get it to work in his new Sony-Ericsson device. At least in this case,
the provider did not charge for the replacement cards.

Kind regards

David

Hi David,

thnks a lot, i have found now these wiki-article:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Carriers#Germany and have seen that i have
nearly the same SIM-Card (i have 64K, 3V, #513, H244, 27-658-30-9
UJ), so i think the new one will help and my problem are gone then.
for the SIMYO-problem: i found here
https://www.simyo.de/de/informieren/umts.html that all new simyo cards
are 3G cards. I would still propose that you request a new card, because
simyo is part of e-plus, so i think they use the same SIM-Cards.

Bye, Arne

the pin. (i have disabled pin with another phone, then there was only
the problem that he doesn't find a network). but with other SIM Cards
form same provider there is no problem.
and other, non-3G-phones hasn't problem with this card, too.
i have no idea where i can find any informations. the gsm.log file
doesn't exist and my gsm-firmware-version is moko8. So, my question is:
does anybody else has a problem with 3G Sim card?

In general minicom is your friend. Reenable the PIN on your simcard. execute
AT to see if the modem responds to you (kill other users if not), reset using
sysfs files if needed.

Kill the qpe process, take a look
at /etc/X11/XSession.d/89qtopia, copy the two exports to your console, run
qpe and take a look at the chat qpe has with the modem.

please share your results and if you don't know what I'm talking about ask.

z.

I hope I have understood you correctly and did what u meant. this is the
console output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# libgsmd-tool -m atcmd
libgsm-tool - (C) 2006-2007 by Harald Welte and OpenMoko, Inc.
This program is Free Software and has ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY

AT
STR=`AT'
RSTR=`OK'

AT+CFUN=1
STR=`AT+CFUN=1'
RSTR=`OK'

AT+CPIN?
STR=`AT+CPIN?'
RSTR=`+CPIN: SIM PIN'

AT+CPIN=
STR=`AT+CPIN='
cme error: 3
RSTR=`+CME ERROR: 3'

so, i don't know what this error means, but the PIN was right. i hope
anyone can imagine something with this, because i can't ;)

bye, Arne
