nope -- it is not actually -- leads to all kinds of problems

just remove all those qtopia packages and reinstall /opt/QTopia from
trolltech's

opkg upgrade
is safe as far as it doesn't install any *qtopia* packages which install
also under /opt/Qtopia (which has to be changed by OM people in their
distribution.)

Ok that totally hosed the system, it boots then I get a flashing cursor in the
top left screen and a
blank screen and thats it, dead system :(

Looks like yu cannot use this recipe to update Qtopia from the pre 2008-08-08
version.

I'll reflash the rootfs, and restore my home.

I presume this script will update future versions of qtopia?

However when you do the opkg update && opkg upgrade it seems to install a bunch
of stuff we don't
need like...

qtopia-phone-x11*

I hope that is ok.

Ok so updating qtopia via the script is not a good idea if you also upgrade the
kernel due to the
missing usb ether modules,

I recovered by flashin gthis kernel...

http://warmcat.com/uImage-moredrivers-stable_507c3c1ba3921bb7.bin

So now I have to figure out if it is safe to opkg upgrade with the latest
qtopia, from what I read
above maybe not so much.

Ok I upgraded the kernel to the version in the Qtopia package...

uImage-2.6.24+git30+436204281bcd1fe5999ad6589ea7ab1b5360c352-r2-om-gta02.bin

And now I don't have USB networking anymore. I guess this is the same problem
as reported for the
other dists.

Is there a workaround (I updated using the script) other than reflashing and
losing all my settings?
and downloads etc.

Is the workaround the same as for the other dists (either load the kernel with
all drivers, or
upgrade everything).

Thanks

That worked great thanks.

Is it safe to update the kernel to the latest version? or does the kernel need
to match the qtopia
image?

Thanks

wget

and install that.

I noticed that too. the packages/opkg/something seems to be borked, but
has nothing to do with qtopia

after having locked my previous qtopia install via upgrade... I just
tried the new image (just kept my /home).

opkg upgrade fails with :
 * ERROR: Package fbset-modes (parent fbset-modes) is not available
from any configured src.

in which repository should it be ?

Thats correct, Qtopia's 4.3 build system does not make a complete ipkg
for easy upgrade. This will change in 4.4

There is a new image at qtopia.net. This new one _should_ be able to
upgrade the system.

As well, there is a qtopia binary only tarball which has a script to
update just qtopia in case you don't want to backup your settings.

Thank you - I thought I was the only one. I registered this as a bug on
Trac (https://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1756) but more or less got
told to go ask Trolltech about it, which is fair enough I suppose. It
would still be nice to get a fix for this however.

Upgrading on Qtopia

2008-08-08 Thread Matthew Lane
Hey all,

I've read that opkg can't upgrade qtopia, but it should be able to
upgrade my kernel, correct?

Well, when I do opkg update, opkg upgrade my phone will spend about
20-30 minutes updating everything (from the latest qtopia image on
trolltech's website) and I need a lot of those packages (such as
libc++6) for running other scripts on qtopia. Anyways, after upgrading,
I restart my phone and it freezes on the blank black screen with a
cursor in the upper left corner. The phone won't ever boot! So I have
to reflash the lastest image I just tried to upgrade. I've attempted
this twice, and I can't upgrade my phone!
