This!

When I envisioned the system architecture of Openmoko, I tried to be a nice
citizen with regards to existing components and versatility — otherwise I
would not have started with DBus as the „collaboration API“ in the first place.

While this was great for education and empowering people to write cool custom
dialers and components in all kinds of languages, it severely increased the
complexity,
latency, etc.

If I were to do this behemoth of a software stack like freesmartphone.org
again, it
would look pretty similar to what you just said. A monolithic
component that takes care about the „features“ of the phone – period. If at
all, with
_very few_ – well defined – extension points for other software to „plug in“.

In fact, now that I have a new programming language darling, I’d even love to
do such a stack again from scratch… but time-wise/financially I can’t afford to
do something
like that any more :-(

Cheers,

Re: [Tinkerphones] ZeroPhone site offline

2022-01-03 Thread Dr. Michael Lauer
Thanks for churning up these interesting comments, Paul.

It’s extremely sad that after all these years with all our technological
advancements and choice of free software projects, getting the very
basic task – solid and reliable phone calls with tolerable
audio quality and battery life – right, still seems to be unachieved.

As much as I love hacking middleware and user interfaces, I never got the
hang out of kernel and/or hardware programming. Even back in the
Openmoko days, I always had the feeling that the kernel and userland people
did not work together close enough. There were certainly people missing who had
a
holistic approach, trying to work across the stack to provide an optimal
user experience.

I always thought this would mainly be a problem with our chaotic community-based
self-organized structures, but not with corporate ones…

That said, if the hardware and the kernel does not provide a certain quality,
you can
only do so much in userland. And it looks to me like the problem is still
mainly that.

That’s a pity. In particular with the recent Pi Zero 2 design that could’ve
been a pretty sweet alternative feature phone.

Not just app developers, also middleware. In fact, the whole userland is
depending on a 100%
functioning kernel – otherwise it’s just no fun anymore.

When I was younger, I could understand the „fixation“ on getting things into
mainline – now,
with more years on my back, I believe things would have turned out differently
if we were
to follow the path of most commercial developers – which is, freezing the
kernel at one point
of time to allow the rest of the folks to move forward without a moving target.

Later on, perhaps, submit stuff upstream, jump to another mainline kernel (if
necessary), rinse
and repeat.

Hi Arseijs,

I’d like to receive a version to have a look at porting FSO to the Zerophone –
unfortunately
I have to skip FOSDEM this year though :(

Regards,

Mickey.

Interesting, thanks for the link.

Unfortunately only software, where as I think free hardware would
be more important these days. Still, I always had a sweet spot for
Mandrake, so let’s see what comes out of it.

Cheers,

P.S. Happy New Year!

[Tinkerphones] Openmoko – 10 Years After (Mickey's Story)

2017-07-24 Thread Dr. Michael Lauer
Hi,

I’m not sure how many people are still subscribed to planet.openmoko.org
, so
I’m linking to my post here as well:

Depending on how long you are following the OpenMoko story, you might remember
and/or recognize a thing or two.

Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
