Optionally help it a little with a thumb through SIM/SD card hole in the back cover. Not sure what you mean by that, but the phone boots just fine. It even blanks the screen and turns it on when I touch it, it just doesn't show anything useful on it. I can connect it and ping it and SSH into it and play music from it. The screen just doesn't work.
