if I kill and restart gwd it either works again or segfaults.
I'm using the latest git on ubuntu feisty and nvidia 9629.

on debian and ubuntu the paths are different. probably,
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/window-manager-settings/libcompiz.so
/usr/lib/libgnome-window-settings1/libcompiz.so
will solve your problem.
