I have an Nvidia video card and downloaded the latest driver as
recommended. I have had no problems. I think the problem might be that
the rest of you are running a system using an Intel chipset. I am using
the Beta of Ubuntu 9.10, 32 bit version of Ubuntu on an AMD 64 Athlon X2
chipset. I have
Edwards fix for Linux noobs (like me...)
1. Starta a Terminal window.
2. Type: cd /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/
3. Type: sudo mv npviewer.bin npviewer.bin.real
4. Type: sudo pico npviewer.bin
5. Add these two lines of text to the file, i.e. Pico:
#!/bin/sh
GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true
Had it on amd64 when I started glxgears, nvidia driver (185)

FYI: Use this line instead, it should be safer because it handles spaces

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: compiz
I'm using ubuntu Karmic and a Nvidia 8400 video card.
** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu)

when I try to run compiz in a terminal after a few second I read abort:core

Same here on Acer Aspire One 150L with Intel 945 GME Graphics; Ubuntu
9.10 32-Bit. Switching to Metacity will fix it.
I can't believe this is importance low. Linux newbies who cannot even
type a capital Letter on their computer will surely return to windows
asap...

This happened to me too, on my old laptop, a Dell Latitude D820 with an
NVidia Quadro NVS120M video card, but as far as I can remember, it
happened to me after disabling compiz too, so it's likely an NVidia bug,
so the ubuntu bug list might not be the best place to report it...

Hi evfool, in my case flickering doesn't appear when compiz is turned off.
Theres also no flickering in 3D-games (like sauerbraten or nexuiz)
Weathergod:
Yep, flickers are not reproducible although it seemed to be better when using
the previous nvidia 173 drivers.

Everyone's talking about workarounds... (excessively!)
Will this be fixed in the repository any time soon?

Steffen,
Updates to the proprietary nvidia drivers will help. Also, updates to
the kernel will also help. On my Fedora 11 system (no compiz), the
flickers happened fairly frequently (a few times a day), but over the
summer, it reduced to at most once a week and there was no upgrade to

The people that are working on fixing this have mostly given up
discussing the issue in here. Patience is required. There were a large
number of changes that contributed to this issue and it will be hard to
correct them. Flash isn't the only issue.

I recently upgraded my computer to Karmic and the issue is still

Well, this new behavior is equivalent of breaking compiz for me. I
was very comfortable with the old behavior of compiz naturally allowing
windows to be resized across displays... I'll try the workaround, but
this new behavior is counterintuitive, and should be treated as a bug.
