This happened to me too, on my old laptop, a Dell Latitude D820 with an NVidia Quadro NVS120M video card, but as far as I can remember, it happened to me after disabling compiz too, so it's likely an NVidia bug, so the ubuntu bug list might not be the best place to report it... unfortunately --
