Has there been any work on fixing this bug? I hope there is a
workaround/fix for Ubuntu 12.10. Especially since Unity 2D has been
removed from default installations.

Applied all updates to fresh ubuntu 12.10 install and the same results
as before. Switching to Unity 2D is not possible anymore, so this is
more important than ever to fix. (Testing the legacy support method now)

This bug affects me. The only workaround that works for me is the
changing-background one. Something else to add that no one else seems
to have noticed: The window buttons automatically rearrange themselves
in order of activity - if you use a window more, its button moves
rightwards in the list.
I had the same problem immediately after updating from 11.10 to 12.04. I
appreciate everyone's inputand tried every suggestion until reaching the
inevitable conclusion that I needed to install and use gnome-shell. Thank you
for continuing to work on this issue.

I'm running into this problem on Ubuntu 15.10 as well. I originally
didn't realize it was the *locked* session that caused difficulties. I
just noticed that when my kids logged on, after a half hour the system
would power down. This is because compiz at 100%+ CPU heated up the CPU
to 114C
Or rather, any hopes to get this libc bug mainlined for 15.10?
or an *actual* workaround (aside from only using KDE)?
