Checked back now, and I am no longer able to reproduce this issue with
unity 7.2.0+14.04.20140423-0ubuntu1.2
compiz 1:0.9.11+14.04.20140409-0ubuntu1
on Ubuntu 14.04.
(Happens neither with build18 packaged in Ubuntu, nor with latest
development version of Widelands.)

As an update, I'm now running Ubuntu 15.04, with
unity 7.3.2+15.04.20150420-0ubuntu1
compiz 1:0.9.12.1+15.04.20150410.1-0ubuntu1
and I have not seen any more of this issue since my previous comment
with either the packaged version of Widelands, or the development
version. Thus, I believe whatever
