Robert, You should be able to format it by using Disk Utility (it is included with the Mac OS) which is found in the Utilities folder which is found in the Applications (Applications - Utilities -Disk Utility). That will also tell you what size it will be. It should be no problem

Get here a combo FireWire/USB drive enclosure and put whatever HD you want inside. Enclosures start at around $25. Don't rely on just USB. If you want to use it for backup with TimeMachine, I think it has to be formatted as a Mac drive [Disk Utility]. I have one of mine formatted FAT32 to use
