[CGUYS] Ghosting Windows

2007-10-10 Thread Joe Tseng
I put out a proposal here at the office to get a number of notebooks and in
order to keep them all in the same state, we'd ghost one and apply the image to
the rest. My understanding is that a Windows license is mapped to a MAC
address - is that true? Has anyone done this before where you'd still have a
valid and uncrippled version of Windows for every unit?

[CGUYS] Wireless Printing but not Scanning

2007-10-10 Thread Harvey Simon
Thanks for the responses to this question. The answers appear consistent,
so I'm convinced. Live and learn. [And sorry Stewart for the inadvertent
email.]

Unless the software is specifically set up for
network scanning it cant be done.

To do network scanning the scanner must be
accessible via the ethernet port. Most scanners
are not setup this way, and if they are usually have a much higher price
tag.

a message that ³Epson Scan cannot be started.² If I plug the

The wireless connection is obviously the issue. But why?

[CGUYS] XP Pro n' AHA-19160/39320

2007-10-10 Thread lcms0516
If anyone is confused by the subject, I apologize. I put it that way for
simplicity.

In the past week, I have had a problem that has, sort of flip-flopped. I
originally had an AHA-19160 in my tower until, my hard drive seemingly
disappeared from the card's BIOS. While the drive disappeared from the BIOS,
XP Pro still recognized it. I decided, I would go ahead and, upgrade the
AHA-19160 to, the AHA-39320 since, I bought it a couple months ago but, never
installed it. After installing the AHA-39320, the hard drive shows up fine
but, when trying to install XP Pro, the drive can't be found. This keeps me
from installing XP Pro on the drive. I have been searching all over the Net
for, situations like this. I have found some but, the solutions were not the
right ones'.

2007-10-10 Thread lcms0516
Tony, I laughed at myself, when you asked that question. That was rather vague
of me.

The AHA-19160 and, AHA-39320 are Host Adapters, made by Adaptec.

As for the prompt, I see that, when I try to install XP Pro but, when I press
F6, nothing happens. I know nothing is wrong with the keyboard.

Doesn't work. MS knows about Ghost and Symantec cooperates with MS. MS
has a tech note with the proper procedure for using Ghost with its
products. You run a utility first to deactivate the license. Then after
the copy you reactivate with new licenses.

Re: [CGUYS] Grabbing domain names of well-known persons?

2007-10-10 Thread b_s-wilk
Why don't you contact her publisher? Publishers usually handle much of
the PR for their authors and handle requests like yours. They also set
up web pages to publicize and sell their books. Writers who are also in
practice and teaching don't usually do, or even have, their own web sites.

Take or audit one of her classes. Sign up for a lecture or lecture
series. Find out if you know any of her students. Read all of her books.
BUT, don't be aggressive about it. If you're simply doing her a favor,
and she's very busy, going through the publisher may be a good start.

[CGUYS] Thunderbird: how to display headers?

2007-10-10 Thread Robert
I reported a possible fake message from eBay to [EMAIL PROTECTED] In
reply, I received this message from eBay:

To enable a more complete investigation of this situation, please email
me a full copy of the message you received including the full headers.
Headers are required as they allow me to trace the path of the email
from where it originated to your email address and determine the true
identity of the sender. Please make certain that you send the headers
from the original email and not from a follow-up email.

You can reply to this message or forward the message you received to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If possible, please send the message in the text of an
email rather than as an attachment.

A header will look like a string of nonsense characters, similar to
the example I have pasted for you below. You can often find this by
using the properties or option function of your email program.
I can't find a way to show the header in Thunderbird (ViewHeadersAll
show some of the header but it can't be copied as text and there is no
slider to show all of the header),

What to do?

Note that you must connect a floppy drive first, and it must be
enabled
  in
the BIOS. And it's gotta have a driver on it (check their

Re: [CGUYS] Grabbing domain names of well-known persons?

2007-10-10 Thread Randy
Well, only a few days ago, I knew virtually nothing about this domain
registration business. Yet I rather quickly came to the tentative
conclusion that it doesn't make sense that people are allowed to register
other people's names (aside from cases of the same name, which could be
worked around by assigning unique identifiers or in most cases, middle
names) and that this should not be legal. Prior to that, I don't recall
discussions here or anywhere else taking this position. This is why I came
up with the tenative proposal that people have domains with their own name
set aside for their own use; at birth or whenever this would take effect for
those already here.

So if it's illegal or clearly unethical, why is is allowed, done apparently
frequently (even GoDaddy admitted this to me when someone from their called
about other matters) and not called into question very much?

Okay, here's an admittedly strange question: Is it always inherently
wrong, improper or maybe even illegal to register someone else's name as
a domain

name, particularly if they are a prominent person?

Without their explicit permission yes, in my opinion (obviously).

Fourth Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Copyright law. Multiple court
decisions concerning privacy rights.

Ethical and moral considerations.

Just not doing it if the person has no opportunity to object or consent.

Suppose I registered randy.net and then posted pornographic material
and claimed it was yours. Would that be legal? Maybe.

Would it be right? No.

If you can't see that then you haven't got a sense of basic fairness,
which

I got from the start.

If you've got a sense of mission, please either engage this person in a
collaborative effort or leave them alone.

That is all I have to say on this topic.

Re: [CGUYS] email header time stamps?

2007-10-10 Thread Michael Fernando
The reason I'm asking is that I'm trying to ascertain the likelihood
that the header time stamps on some mail I have received from a sender
 are accurate or possibly fabricated.

The headers should contain at least one Received: line. If those
lines aren't forged, they are usually chronological. My mail server
lists them from the most recent to the oldest. Let's say you have a
line like this:

  Received: from mailsrv1.domain1.com (mout-56.domain1.com [220.220.22.22])
  by mx.yourdomain.org (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id l92CrYxR029471
for [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Tue, 2 Oct 2007 08:53:34 -0400 (EDT)

Note that even though this is on three lines, it is a single Received:
line. Your lines may be missing various parts. Most mail servers don't
add the for [EMAIL PROTECTED] part, for instance.

The first thing you have to do is look at the headers of the email in
question and identify the line that was added by _your_ ISP. In other
words, the line that has the by somehost.yourdomain.org part. If the
incoming e-mail in your ISP goes through several servers before it
reaches the end user (you), there could be several Received lines that
matches the above criteria.

Now, you have to assume that your ISP's (or your own, your school's
your workplace's) mail server is working correct, not hacked, keeps
the time in your timezone, etc. etc. In other words, you have to
trust something and if you can't even trust the mail server at your
end, then there's no point looking any further.

So, given you trust your mail server, the above line with the
by mx.yourdomain.org ... is the only line you can be certain of.
What that line tells you is that your (ISP's) mail server received this
message from a host with an IP address 220.220.22.22 and _your_ mail
server identified that host as mout-56.domain1.com. During the SMTP
handshake, that host identified itself as mailsrv1.domain1.com. The
timestamp Tue, 2 Oct 2007 08:53:34 -0400 was added by _your_ mail
server, so you can trust that.  [In the timestamps, -0400 means US EDT;
-0700 means US Pacific Daylight Time; - means GMT which may or may
not be UK time depending on if it is the daylight savings time in UK]

Now, if there is another Received: line that has domain1.com like
by ... domain1.com and it's timestamp is close enough, you may
want to trust that just to trace the route, but there is no guarantee
that that line is legit.

Why can't you trust other lines? It's because of the way mail servers
route messages. Any mail server can contact any other mail
server and tell the receiving server that I have some mail for
you, and if the receiving side accepts it, can send all the rest as
a data stream. The receiving mail server adds _one_ Received: line
as a way to show its work. All the other Received: lines are
sent by the other mail server as a part of the message. You cannot
even trust the From: or the Date: lines.

[ Here's one way to add fake Received: lines
telnet mailsrv.yourdomain.org 25, after connection, you can do
helo gibberish.yourdomain.org
mail from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
data
type in any random Received: lines here
From: any random ID
Date: any random date
To: someID

This e-mail has fake headers blah blah
.

depending on how much sanity-checking your mail server does
you should be able to send yourself e-mail with quite a lot of
fake stuff in the header. ]

Now, if you really must verify if a message was sent for whatever
reason, you can contact the postmaster@senderdomain.com (for
the appropriate sender domain) and give him/her a copy of the
headers and ask that s/he checks the mail logs for the SMTP ID
listed in the headers. But, most postmasters won't do that
unless there's a really good reason for that or there's a court
order or something like that. And, most mail servers don't keep
the mail logs forever, so longer you wait, harder it might be to
check the SMTP ID or the Message-ID at the sender's side.
