France is one of a very few western countries where strong encryption
is illegal or requires a license. Gutmann has a file about someone at
IBM saying they had to turn over their strong encryption keys to the
French authorities, and then began losing bids. So they sent messages
with high bid information by electronic means and sent a courier with
the real bid. All the French bids underbid the electronic bid, but
overbid the real bid.

Keep stuff on your server in the US. Even run the encryption in
"Traveler" mode with the software on your network server.

But is SSL or VPN is compromised, then you're in trouble anyhow.
Except that if those are compromised they won't do anything because
they want to keep the secret for the big fish, just as Churchill did
not warn about the Coventry raid because he wanted to retain the Enigma secret.

Check the documentation. The source code is on line. Basically,
random data on your computer, without headers or other obvious ways
of identifying it, is a real problem to identify as such. There are
ways of identifying "steganography" because of the way the data is
hidden in the "photograph" or whatever, pretending to be noise. The
documentation on this is fairly convincing, and it seems to have some
good people behind it. That is, even if the data is identified as
encryption, the encryption is still apparently secure.

Re: [CGUYS] [IP] Re: U.S. Agents Seize Travelers' Devices / US technical work visas.

2008-02-09 Thread db
Border/ travel security is the least of it.

The best technical talents from all over the world are looking less and
less to the US for jobs because of the disadvantageous work visa and
naturalization situation in the US.

I have an extremely well educated, and talented Indian friend who has
been working for Amazon in the US for 4 years. After bucking the US
naturalization process for 4 years, he has decided, like many of his
friends that he is going to emigrate to Canada, get a job there and quit
amazon because he can become a citizen there in 1 - 1/2 years (with his
skills but even WITHOUT a job) where in the US he it is probably he will
have to wait for 7 years.

Presently, every 3 years during his work visa renewal process he can't
leave the US for travel purposes for 6 months and if he lost his Amazon
job he would have to leave the US in 7 days (this varies from state to
state) making it very difficult to change jobs unless he can make it
seamless and making his life in general no more than a transient one.
Because of this situation, he hasn't bought a house here although he can
well afford one...

He well paid but treated like a indentured servant. And now that he
can get paid equally well elsewhere he and many like him are leaving the US.

We've been using Quickbooks and it as met our needs. At first we had to
run Softwindows to run it on our Mac. Then when they made the Mac
version capable of saving a Windows version of our data, we switched to
the Mac version. We have been happy with it (QuickBooks Pro 6), but as
I said earlier our Account wanted us to upgrade. I just want to be

[CGUYS] Truecrypt Encryption (WAS: Fwd: [IP] Re: Encrypted laptop poses legal dilemma)

2008-02-09 Thread David Chessler
I forwarded a couple of messages about US Customs seizing computers,
sometimes failing to return them, and demanding passwords. Cellphones
are also sometimes seized. The TSA claims it does not do this. This
can cause problems for people who travel with company-sensitive or
other private information. Some companies avoid the problem by wiping
all data from the laptop and having the user access it by SSL or
other secure method over the network. Other solutions are possible.

The following may be a solution for individual travelers without
access to high-speed internet connections when in the field, or who
lack access to secure connections to a secure server.

Dave,

Check this as the perfect technological answer to the problem presented below.

Given my position , however, please do not use my name or my
company's name if you post this. Like anything, it has as many
legitimate as illegitimate uses; this is public information and,
ironically, was brought to my attention by some of the top security
experts in the industry.

http://www.truecrypt.org/

Creates a virtual drive inside of any object of your choosing. But
goes one better. You can encrypt within the encryption in ways
undetectable. Thus you can give a password and allow others to open
it and inspect. Those looking will never know that within the
encrypted space there is another deeper form of encryption. That
said, I'd really hate to see the gov't or someone else shut this
down. At the same time, for people traveling who are doing
legitimate things that overreaching gov't officials have no right to
see (and for which it is too late once compromise), this presents a
valid solution. It is also incredibly useful for anyone carrying
sensitive information b/c it gives you two layers of protection if
your storage device or laptop is stolen. Know that if you mount it
to a flash drive, it formats the entire drive. Most people create an
object and mount it to that. Also, never, ever forget your password
- did that once - and lost 50 megs worth of data. (might want to use
roboform, which encrypts and protetcts your passwords). There's no
getting inside of this. Ever. It's about as rock solid as it gets.

Thanks,

A registry cleaner utility should be able to do this.

Yes, the TSA employees are just following orders.

But, considering how easy it still is for investigators to slip bombs,
knives, guns, etc. through existing TSA security, it hardly seems worth it.

Re: [CGUYS] QuickBooks Pro

2008-02-09 Thread Fred Holmes
I've been told that QuickBooks isn't capable of tracking funding sources, i.e.
automatically ensuring that funds received (e.g., a grant) for a specific
purpose are being spent for that purpose. I don't use Quickbooks, and it may
be possible to add additional fields to the "stock" accounting database that
would accomplish this. Such additional fields may require a higher level of
training than most folks get.

Changing the drive letter is really not feasible. If the drive letter of the
boot / system drive were changed, then you would have to go into the
configuration of every installed program and change the location of the file to
be launched and all of the helper files. That's an impossibly large task, only
feasible accomplished by reinstalling all of the applications. Might as well

Re: [CGUYS] External HD enclosure question.....

2008-02-09 Thread Fred Holmes
If it's a decent machine:

1. It will still boot automatically from its own boot drive, without user
intervention.

2. You could boot from the external drive by accessing the motherboard BIOS
boot menu and selecting the external drive from the menu. Modern motherboards
can boot from a USB drive. To access the boot menu, press one of the F-keys,
similar to going into BIOS setup. If you have the POST set to display progress
on the monitor, then you should get a message as to which key to press. (In
principle you could also go into the motherboard BIOS setup menu and change the
default boot drive, but that wouldn't make much sense in this instance.)

3. If you execute a boot from the old, now external drive, you will have all
the wrong hardware drivers, especially the video drivers, and you will get
"unexpected results." (or maybe you get the expected results which are that
the system defaults to 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 display resolution, and the audio
card doesn't work.)

Re: [CGUYS] I Made a Green-Horn Error in Windows Install

2008-02-09 Thread Fred Holmes
I've done that with one machine (different details) and have been able to get
everything to work. Requires some tweaking. I've even considered it more
secure, since nothing is in its "standard" location. That being said, the only
thing I can recommend for a fix is a Google search. When booted, you can't
change the letter for the boot or system drive (which can be different, the
boot drive being where ntldr, etc. are, and the system drive being where the
WINNT/WINDOWS director is>).

Rule of thumb is that all drives except a standard floppy attached to the
motherboard should be disconnected when installing a Windows OS as the first OS
on the machine unless you deliberately want a non-standard configuration.

In principle one could install the drive as an "extra" drive on another
machine, and then hack the appropriate portion of the configuration information
(maybe just a registry entry), if you knew where it is. I don't.

Me me me. I don't like it as much as Dr Who. Cap'n Jack was so much

Then again, I don't like the new Who as much as the old Who. The

2008-02-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I don't know about obsessive, but I recently returned from a trip to Spain and
had my belief reinforced in the fact that the security procedures in Madrid are
better than ours.

The difference, to my mind, is that they always have security people who
interview each departing person, then even in the line to board the plane, they
check back. They have been doing this sort of thing for many years, it's
nothing new. This is in addition to the usual technology we have. Yes, they
require you to remove your shoes, but they do offer plastic booties to wear
while your shoes are off.

What makes the difference to me is the addition of a human element to the
overall process. Our security seems to me to depend too heavily on technology.

Having said this, I have to add that I'm tired of hearing complaints about TSA
from people who fancy themselves libertarian. As far as I can tell, the TSA
people are doing the job they've been given to do, and anyway they don't make
the policies. Intrusive security is far better than none.

Excel can import, but read only access may not suffice. They could get
read-write access by simply accessing the database directly via a web
browser. But I don't think it is really an access issue.

Based on previous incidents I think that access is not the point. Some
people seek personal validation by doing all their computing with

I think an iggle is a type of bird only found in PA. :)

Re: [CGUYS] MS Yahoo!

2008-02-09 Thread John Duncan Yoyo
I'm about three quarters of the way through Torchwood season 1 . I
thought they were better as the series goes on Some of the earlier
ones had these sex oriented plot twists that felt like an HBO comedy
where they used to have a topless women in the shot for no particular
reason. I liked the one about the ghost best.

Iggle = Eagle in Philadelphian.

Can't excel just be setup as the interface to
the database which would allow the excel-centric
users to be happy without stomping on the
structure.

[CGUYS] External HD enclosure question.....

2008-02-09 Thread D.L.H.
Situation:
-New Vista machine (haven't seen it yet...arrives next week).

-Old IDE hard drive inside an USB external HD enclosure. --from
recently deceased homebuilt machine that ran XP--

-Can I assume that the new Vista machine shouldn't have an issue with
the XP install or presence MBR on the drive in the external enclosure,
since I expect the Vista machine not to recognize the USB external
drive as a bootable device?

Any pitfalls I should know about?

Re: [CGUYS] find tracking device on truck

2008-02-09 Thread Isa Miller
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will get them to him just as soon as he
removes the tracking software she put on his computer or get his work email
address.

>My God that would have to cost her a fortune in texting charges, not
to mention filling her inbox. Unless he's exaggerating about the
"whenever the truck moves" part!
>>>
>From what he can tell it sent messages when truck was started and then every
30 minutes or so until it was parked at end destination. Since we live in
Houston, Texas and he drives an hour or more each way to and from work he is
finding out it was costing a fortune!

My wife is welcome to check my location if she just
wants to see me go to work every morning and back home every night.>>

That's about what he was doing but my 21 year old niece totaled her car last
summer and was using Dad's truck when she could.
A 21 year old single female who likes clubs riding in Dad's truck burning
Dad's tank of gas. I bet that kept my sister-in-law busy!

<<>>

She is refusing psych evaluations that the DA has offered. She may end up
doing more time than she thinks she can get. Her parents are refusing to bail
her
out but have been trying to get her mental help.

Thanks, on digets,
Isa
