AFAIK that is how you do it. I would keep a standard tuner around for
that if you really want to rely on it for audio.

For better information on this look around

or if you have a TiVO you can go here
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=7. I'm
guessing you have either an R15 or HR20 and I don't know much about
those machines.

I have. Nothing found, so nothing to report.

You have to invoke a scan manually and check for updates, though it doesn't

Take a look at Threatfire (free): http://www.threatfire.com/ It looks to

Radio Shack should have plug adapters for travel through Europe and the UK.
There may be different plugs in different locations, with the UK being the

Your US wiring is fine - in fact overengineered - for 240 volts. The lower
the voltage, the bigger the gauge needed to carry the necessary current, so
you will notice that European wiring seems awfully flimsy. The critical thing
is the transformer. I've never seen a computer power supply that could not
handle both voltages, 120 for here and 240 for virtually everywhere else. All
you need should be the plug adapter. Buy the travel set.

David,
Under XP, the DOS box is interpreted... meaning it is running ON TOP OF
the XP operating system. Each instruction from a program running in this
box is translated through XP, just like it would when you use a graphical
interface.
Maybe he meant that he can type commands faster in a command line

familiar with the old way of doing things in DOS.

Re: [CGUYS] Using Laptop in Spain

2008-02-13 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

The transformer is actually your power supply.

Most laptops have a power supply that is also a power transformer
that converts 120-240 VAC into 18 (aprox.) VDC which then plugs into
your laptop.

You can buy the plug adapters (which is what they are) at most big
box store along with Radio shack and others.

Notice these are only plug adapters. If you want to use any other
equipment you will need a transformer. (Or as someone suggested car plug ins)

IGO makes a line of adapters that is really handy. You buy one
adapter then you buy multiple tips for all your appliances. I have
one in the car for my bluetooth, and two different phones. I even
bought a spliter which allows me to charge two devices from one plug in.

Re: [CGUYS] Using Laptop in Spain

It's magic.

Seriously, the 100-240v designation on the power supply indicates that it can
handle both voltages, sensing the input voltage and automatically stepping it
down to the much lower voltage used by the computer. By building this sensing
and switching capability into a single power supply used in all of its
computers, the manufacturer doesn't have to keep track of where in the world
the machine is to be used - other than supplying a cord with the correct plug
at one end.

As for exactly how the sensing and switching is handled, you'd have to get a
techie with a wiring diagram to explain.

Re: [CGUYS] Transferring files using DOS

2008-02-13 Thread Andy Gallant
Interesting ... I did a little digging, and xcopy32 isn't part of (at
least my) XP Pro-based DOS. It seems that xcopy32 was in Win95, Win98
SE, and some later versions. Here's a problem and warning (for 95 and
98) excerpted from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/134772.

/begin excerpt/
SYMPTOMS
When you use the XCOPY32 command to copy files, you are not prompted
before it overwrites files that are already present.

CAUSE
The XCOPY32 command is not designed to prompt you before overwriting
existing files.

NOTE: Xcopy32.exe is an internal helper program that is not designed to
be run directly from the command line. It is designed only to be run as
a helper by the main Xcopy.exe program.

RESOLUTION
Do not run the Xcopy32.exe program directly. Instead, use one of the
following methods:

• Use the XCOPY command. The XCOPY command prompts you before files are
overwritten, provided the COPYCMD environment variable has not been set
to the value /Y. If you set this environment variable, you can force
overwrite protection by changing the command to: SET COPYCMD=/-Y

• Use Windows Explorer to copy files.
/end excerpt/

I'm not an expert. I would try Windows Explorer unless something went
wrong or if I had to a situation where I needed to try a batch file.
Again, good luck.

Re: [CGUYS] Using Laptop in Spain

2008-02-13 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

Actually it has been around a long time.

Your power supply on your desktop has always been able of doing the
same things. Look at it, it has a switch on it for 110-240. All it
took was a different cord, with the correct end on it for the plug in the wall.

Many of our toys actually use DC which requires a transformer of
sorts to convert AC into DC. So manufacturers got smart and in some
cases made their power supplies dual voltage. (Cheaper than making
one for one country and another for another county.)

Routers and such usually are shipped with the correct power
supply. I have bought foreign marketed equipment and simply use a US
version of the power supply and it works.

Re: [CGUYS] Using Laptop in Spain

2008-02-13 Thread Brian Jones
I knew about the power supplies with mechanical switches, and have seen
these switches on laptop power supplies in the past. I presumed that they
had discontinued this feature to make 'em cheaper, and to make travelers
purchase 2 power supplies. You have restored my faith in mankind!

Actually it has been around a long time.

Your power supply on your desktop has always been able of doing the same
things. Look at it, it has a switch on it for 110-240. All it took was a
different cord, with the correct end on it for the plug in the wall.

Many of our toys actually use DC which requires a transformer of sorts to
convert AC into DC. So manufacturers got smart and in some cases made
their power supplies dual voltage. (Cheaper than making one for one
country and another for another county.)

Routers and such usually are shipped with the correct power supply. I
have bought foreign marketed equipment and simply use a US version of the
power supply and it works.

Re: [CGUYS] Transferring files using DOS

2008-02-13 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

I do not use it all anymore. I would never recommend it at all.

As I said earlier I used it way back when, but
the OS has outgrown it's usefulness.

Use explorer or one of the after market shells to do this.

Or use a migration program to make backups etc.

Interesting ... I did a little digging, and
xcopy32 isn't part of (at least my) XP Pro-based

SE, and some later versions. Here's a problem
and warning (for 95 and 98) excerpted from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/134772.

/begin excerpt/
SYMPTOMS
When you use the XCOPY32 command to copy files,
you are not prompted before it overwrites files that are already present.

CAUSE
The XCOPY32 command is not designed to prompt
you before overwriting existing files.

NOTE: Xcopy32.exe is an internal helper program
that is not designed to be run directly from the
command line. It is designed only to be run as a
helper by the main Xcopy.exe program.

RESOLUTION
Do not run the Xcopy32.exe program directly.
Instead, use one of the following methods:

• Use the XCOPY command. The XCOPY command
prompts you before files are overwritten,
provided the COPYCMD environment variable has
not been set to the value /Y. If you set this
environment variable, you can force overwrite
protection by changing the command to: SET COPYCMD=/-Y

• Use Windows Explorer to copy files.
/end excerpt/

I'm not an expert. I would try Windows Explorer
unless something went wrong or if I had to a
situation where I needed to try a batch file. Again, good luck.

It's magic.

Seriously, the 100-240v designation on the power supply indicates that it
can handle both voltages, sensing the input voltage and automatically
stepping it down to the much lower voltage used by the computer. By building
this sensing and switching capability into a single power supply used in all
of its computers, the manufacturer doesn't have to keep track of where in
the world the machine is to be used - other than supplying a cord with the
correct plug at one end.

As for exactly how the sensing and switching is handled, you'd have to get a
techie with a wiring diagram to explain.

Dan,
I am going to Spain next month (240v). I noticed my tiny Toshiba power
supply says input: 100-240 volts, output: 19v.
Are you saying that I do NOT need a step-down transformer? How does the
transformer detect and switch modes?

Re: [CGUYS] USB drivers missing

2008-02-13 Thread Fred Holmes
If Device Manager won't tell you what driver it thinks it is using, then you
might use device manager to un-install the USB ports, re-boot, and let the boot
process see truly new hardware rather than what it likely sees as old
hardware for which the device driver is either missing or unspecified.

Maybe you need to do a system repair from the Win XP product disc?

This is one good reason to purchase (download) DriverGuide Tookit (Google
it). It will store a separate record of all of your drivers, and the drivers
themselves in a separate folder on your hard drive. Then keep a backup of that
folder on removable (and removed) media. (I am sure there are competitors to
this product, but I tried this one first and liked it.

Re: [CGUYS] USB drivers missing

2008-02-13 Thread Brian Jones

The USB drivers are included in WIN XP. They will install automatically.
It almost sounds like maybe you have a USB device plugged in that may have
been damaged or changed by the power fail/surge. Try unplugging all USB,
then reboot to see if you get the message again. Then plug in each USB
device to see which one no longer has a device driver associated with it.
That will be your culprit.

If you get the message without any USB devices plugged in, then:
go to your DEVICE MANAGER (right click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, then
the HARDWARE tab).
Expand the USB controllers, then right click on each item in this list and
delete it (if it will allow you to). You must have at least power user
privledges to do this. Reboot, and XP will detect and reinstall fresh
drivers for each USB root. Finally, plug in your devices and watch for
errors.

If XP cannot install drivers for the USB ports, then the USB section on your
Motherboard may be damaged. Purchase an aftermarket USB card and pop it
into your slots. Get one with the latest firewire port for good measure.

You mentioned that the BIOS had changes in it... check it again to see if
the USB ports may have been disabled (this could cause the message you are
seeing). Not all BIOS can disable the USB ports, so don't worry if you
don't see them. If you BIOS was changed during the power surge, you might
want to blast a new image into your BIOS... Either use the 'RESET BIOS'
sequence or download the latest BIOS upgrade from your manufacturer. (be
VERY careful to get the right one!)

 Good Luck!

to tell an l (low case L) from an I (up case i). So you have to be

Re: [CGUYS] Using Laptop in Spain

2008-02-13 Thread Tom Piwowar
It is called a switching power supply. It works very differently from
the traditional transformer-rectifier power supplies (linear power
supplies) you may be familiar with. In simple terms it is an oscillator
that produces a high frequency square wave going from zero volts to some
positive value (the value depends of the output voltage you are trying to
get). This square wave is then filtered to provide the desired DC
voltage. The output voltage is monitored and a feedback loop turns the
oscillator on and off to keep the output voltage at the desired value.

One advantage of this system is that it will accept a wide range of
voltages and frequencies. The feedback loop determines what comes out.

Another advantage is that it can be made small and lightweight because
the oscillator's transformer runs at high frequencies. Such transformers
are small and light. Such a system also does not produce much heat
because it does not have to burn off excess power. It simply shuts off
when the voltage is the desired value and turns back on as the voltage
drops. The on-off switching occurs many times per second.

I am going to Spain next month (240v). I noticed my tiny Toshiba power
supply says input: 100-240 volts, output: 19v.
Are you saying that I do NOT need a step-down transformer? How does the
transformer detect and switch modes?

[CGUYS] Highlighting PDFs

2008-02-13 Thread Michael S. Altus
I might be ordering PDF files of medical journal articles and might have to
highlight them to support statements in text of an article that I am working
on. I have a Windows XP computer.

But first, here is Adobe's FAQ about highlighting with Reader:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/acrrfaq.html
Q. Can I edit a PDF file using Adobe Reader?
A. No. You cannot make permanent changes to PDF files using Adobe Reader;
however you can perform many edit-like functions using Adobe Reader if the
author
has enabled these functions using Acrobat 7.0 Professional. For example, you
can highlight text and add comments on sticky notes. If you're looking to
create and exchange documents, collect and compare comments, and tailor file
security to distribute reliable and polished Adobe PDF documents, look into
using
Adobe Acrobat software.
Q. Can I mark up and review files in Adobe Reader?
A. Yes, if this functionality has been rights-enabled by the PDF author.
Adobe Acrobat or Adobe LiveCycle software lets PDF authors turn on special
commenting tools in Adobe Reader on a document-by-document basis. This
capability
enables Adobe Reader 7.0 users to easily review and mark up PDF files with a
variety of commenting and markup tools. You can add sticky notes; indicate text
edits; and highlight, cross out, or underline text. You can also add premade or
dynamic stamps.

I've learned about the following alternatives to Adobe Acrobat:

Foxit PDF Editor
www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/pe_intro.php

PDF Annotator
www.ograhl.com/en/download.php?Product=pdfannotator

ScanSoft PaperPort
www.digitalriver.com/v2.0-img/operations/scansoft/site/html/paperport11/pport_
overview.html

Comments, anyone? I want do to it easily without having to learn new
software.

Thanks,

Michael

Re: [CGUYS] USB drivers missing

2008-02-13 Thread Robert
I followed your advice about unplugging the USB devices. I also
unplugged the power supply even tho some were switched off. As I
plugged them back in, some became active and some didn't so I repeated
the operation for the ones that were still not active. Eventually all
became active again.

Brian Jones wrote:

The USB drivers are included in WIN XP. They will install automatically.
It almost sounds like maybe you have a USB device plugged in that may
have been damaged or changed by the power fail/surge. Try unplugging
all USB, then reboot to see if you get the message again. Then plug
in each USB device to see which one no longer has a device driver
associated with it. That will be your culprit.

If you get the message without any USB devices plugged in, then:
go to your DEVICE MANAGER (right click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES,
then the HARDWARE tab).
Expand the USB controllers, then right click on each item in this list
and delete it (if it will allow you to). You must have at least power
user privledges to do this. Reboot, and XP will detect and reinstall
fresh drivers for each USB root. Finally, plug in your devices and
watch for errors.

If XP cannot install drivers for the USB ports, then the USB section
on your Motherboard may be damaged. Purchase an aftermarket USB card
and pop it into your slots. Get one with the latest firewire port for
good measure.

You mentioned that the BIOS had changes in it... check it again to see
if the USB ports may have been disabled (this could cause the message
you are seeing). Not all BIOS can disable the USB ports, so don't
worry if you don't see them. If you BIOS was changed during the
power surge, you might want to blast a new image into your BIOS...
Either use the 'RESET BIOS' sequence or download the latest BIOS
upgrade from your manufacturer. (be VERY careful to get the right one!)

 Good Luck!

Dan,

Not anything! Turns out that the creator of a PDF file can lock it in such a

If so check and see if the Motherboard has some special drivers you

Otherwise it is possible they got zapped. That is one thing on USB

I followed your advice about unplugging the USB devices. I also
unplugged the power supply even tho some were switched off. As I
plugged them back in, some became active and some didn't so I
repeated the operation for the ones that were still not active.
Eventually all became active again.

Re: [CGUYS] Using Laptop in Spain

2008-02-13 Thread Michel Lowe
Be aware that you may not even require any type of plug adapter. When I was
in China last year I found the outlets in my hotel rooms had a cross-shaped
slit capable of connecting Chinese appliances (horizontally oriented plugs)
AND American plugs through the vertical slits. I used a Canon camera
charger and my laptop with no special plugs or adapters. BTW, the Internet
in Beijing smokes! Way faster than in most US hotels. Photo uploads,
Skype, both rocked.

Now that my USB problem appears to be solved on my Windows XP desktop, a
further question. I earlier mentioned that I had to reset the Setup
because after the power failure there were no drives were found, the
date and time were wrong, the RAID controller had be switched on, etc.
I restored these as best I could, but I'm not sure if I did it
correctly. The computer seems to work OK, however. Will you please
comment if anything is wrong? This is how I have configured it now.

This I don't understand this at all from the setup menu:

Hard Disk Drive Sequence:
1. System Bios
2. Unknown device (not installed)
3. USB device (not installed)
4. Unknown device (not installed)

This I think is OK, but not sure:

Drive Configuration:
Diskette Drive A:
SATA Raid: Off
SATA Primary Hard Drive: On
SATA Secondary Hard Drive: On
Primary Master Drive: Off
Primary Slave Drive: Off
Secondary Master Drive: CD-ROM
Secondary Slave Drive: CD-ROM
IDE Drive UDMA: On

The computer has two internal SATA hard drives installed, and two
internal optical drives. According to computer specs, it is possible to
add a third internal hard drive but not an SATA one.

All that looks OK but you may have a problem with the BIOS battery being dead.

You should not loose your settings that easily. I have had my system
shut down due to power failures (Sometimes weekly here) and not lost
my settings.

There is a pancake battery on your motherboard that may need to be
replaced so you do not loose your settings again.

OK, I can open the case and try to find the battery. If I remove the
battery to see what it is, will everything be lost from the BIOS once
again? If not, how long do I to replace it without losing the BIOS
settings?

BTW, I ran Lavalys Everest and it reports no battery info. My computer
is now 5 years old.

Where might the battery be located? In plain sight, or hidden inside a
cover?

Re: [CGUYS] direct tv dvr

2008-02-13 Thread b_s-wilk

Well with a regular receiver you can autotune...with the dvr you record but
it doesn't change the sation, it can record it in the background. So i have
to record using both tuners up so one will actually change the output. Some
of the podcasts are the same but mostly not. I go thru saturday/sunday book
tv schedules and record anything interesting. They all don't show up on
podcasts.

Do you have more than one receiver? We have two and decided against
getting a DVR. Instead we bought a Samsung upconverting DVD recorder,
http://tinyurl.com/2s647c and 15 Maxell DVD-RW disks. This way we can
use the receiver to autotune and the DVD recorder to record with its timer.

No, I can't record and view on the same TV, but we rarely record
anything when we're at home anyway, unless it's in the middle of the
night. We can always record on one TV and watch the other.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad we got the DVD recorder instead of the DVR.

Betty

The newer batteries are in plain sight. Look for a battery that
looks like a quarter As long as you do not turn off the computer you
will not loose the info. It is there to keep the info intact when it
is not on. (Its purpose is to keep the CMOS/BIOS information intact
when the computer is not on.)

There are various tricks of the trade to recreate files that have various
reproduction restrictions. I don't have Adobe Reader on the computer, but with

The trick is that most displays use a sans-serif font where it is

to tell an l (low case L) from an I (up case i). So you have to be
 very carefil about this one.

OK, I can open the case and try to find the battery. If I remove the battery

The battery is almost certainly a CR-2032 button battery. Same battery as
used in automobile door lock zappers. About the size of a quarter. It's been
standard for more than five years now. With the machine turned off, but still
plugged into the wall, so that there is still 5-volt power to the motherboard,
change the battery very carefully. Use a plastic or wooden spatula to
dislodge the old battery, instead of a metallic screwdriver. Or use a metallic
screwdriver if you have a steady hand and the battery is located where you can
see it clearly. The 5-volt power to the motherboard will sustain the CMOS RAM
settings no matter how dead the battery is.

Re: [CGUYS] USB drivers missing

2008-02-13 Thread Fred Holmes
It won't help you in this instance, but you can back up and restore your CMOS
settings with:

http://www.sharewareplaza.com/CMOSSave-download_51631.html

I haven't used this version, but I have used an earlier version with good
success. Something everyone should do. A Google of CMOSSAVE will find some of
the older versions as well. You need a DOS boot disk to provide the OS from
which CMOSSAVE.COM, CMOSCHK.COM, and CMOSREST.COM will run. FreeDOS will do.
You don't need any drivers because you aren't trying to access any hardware
except for the CMOS RAM and the video in 80 x 25 text mode.

Since the CMOS RAM holds settings for a lot of things, including processor
clock speed/multiplier, bus clock speed/multiplier, RAM timing, etc., it's
really important to save these settings in a manner in which you can restore
them from backup. Lots of things can blow away your CMOS settings, including
installing software that turns out to be incompatible with something already on
your machine. I've had that happen many times.

Now that my USB problem appears to be solved on my Windows XP desktop, a
further question. I earlier mentioned that I had to reset the Setup because
after the power failure there were no drives were found, the date and time

I restored these as best I could, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. The
computer seems to work OK, however. Will you please comment if anything is
wrong? This is how I have configured it now.

This I don't understand this at all from the setup menu:

Hard Disk Drive Sequence:
1. System Bios
2. Unknown device (not installed)
3. USB device (not installed)
4. Unknown device (not installed)

This I think is OK, but not sure:

Drive Configuration:
Diskette Drive A:
SATA Raid: Off
SATA Primary Hard Drive: On
SATA Secondary Hard Drive: On
Primary Master Drive: Off
Primary Slave Drive: Off
Secondary Master Drive: CD-ROM
Secondary Slave Drive: CD-ROM
IDE Drive UDMA: On

The computer has two internal SATA hard drives installed, and two internal
optical drives. According to computer specs, it is possible to add a third
internal hard drive but not an SATA one.

Re: [CGUYS] direct tv dvr

2008-02-13 Thread b_s-wilk

What does the HD dvr run?

It's not HD. It records in standard def, and upconverts to 1080i.
Picture on 37 LCD and 42 plasma TVs is quite good. I like being able
to re-use the DVD-RW disks. You can get HD for a lot more, but for
recordings that we intend watch but not always save, this works well.
The Samsung DVD-R135 was one of the few DVD recorders available when we
wanted to buy, and at the right price; as long as you use quality disks
[Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, etc.] the results are excellent.

What do you mean run? It records, then plays, like a DVR, but with
multiple disks. The tuner is in the satellite box.

Run as in cost. You said it up converts...but if nothing is HD what is
there to up convert? Up converting dvd players take dvds and push them to
480p AFAIK. But if your source is standard 480i, then it's never going to
be better then that. Do standard directv boxes do 480p?
