Re: [CGUYS] Adobe Reader 9

I see that Adobe has a new reader out. Is there any reason I should up

grade? I currently have Adobe Reader 7. I have an iMac G4 running
10.4.11. I don't use Adobe's plugin, I use PDF Browser Plugin

 instead.

I use the SchubertIt plugin for PDFs in browsers, and Preview for
everything else.

The only reason I've used Adobe Reader in the past year is to do my
state taxes. No reason to upgrade Reader unless tax forms don't work in
Preview.

Re: [CGUYS] Zune [was: iTunes 8 causing BSOD]

2008-09-26 Thread b_s-wilk

Right, and this brings up a pretty good example of what I'm talking
 about.
Photoshop is in the same boat as Mathematica in this respect: it runs
perfectly well on both Windows and Mac, so the operating system is
irrelevant. Nevertheless, when Tom discovers that a few Microsoft print
 ads
were done using Mac Photoshop, he is compelled to post a message saying
 I
would not use Windows for such an important job either. What's the
 point?
Where's the value in that? Is there anything to that post whatsoever,
 other
than yet another gratuitous and meaningless slam at Microsoft?

No, Photoshop is hideous on the PC because it doesn't have the color
management tools or the video clarity to do fine, accurate details. It
also takes many more steps to do the same task on a PC compared to a
Mac. I've turned down jobs because they wanted me to use a PC, even
though I could have made more money, charging by the hour. Print shops
have a terrible time cleaning up Windows files before they can even use
the prepress software. Most use Macs for the cleanup, although print
shops often use Macs, Windows, and Linux in the same shop.

Sure, Photoshop, and InDesign, and Quark run on both platforms--I've
used all three on both. That doesn't mean they run as well because of OS
limitations that get in the way.

I am not making gratuitous and meaningless slams at Microsoft. I've used
M$ since MS-DOS. When I bid on a project by the job and not by the hour,
I can't afford the extra hours it will take to finish a job accurately.

If I did accounting, I'd use Excel for Windows.

Re: [CGUYS] Zune [was: iTunes 8 causing BSOD]

2008-09-26 Thread b_s-wilk

Two questions...and I don't have a zune, I have an ipod. But I'm
 wondering
what is missing on the zune for you?

Why did it take an hour on the HP? It sounds more like it is just
unfamiliar territory? It takes me less then an hour for me to
 reinstall my
entire os and drivers on my pc then it did for an ipod reformat. What
 went
wrong with that ipod backup on the HP?

I wouldn't buy a Zune. It doesn't have the features I want.

I'm just curious: since you apparently use a hard drive-based Pod, what
features is Zune missing?

Zune doesn't have an interface as seamless as iTunes on the Mac. Zune OS
isn't as transparent as the iPod's. I have an iPod Nano. I'm considering
getting a Touch if I don't get an N-series phone. Neither has a hard
drive. My husband has iPods with hard drives. I only borrow them to show
video of dance competitions, since he can only use one at a time, and
2nd gen Nanos don't do video unless they're hacked--mine isn't, yet.

I backed up the iPod on a DVD-RW on my G4. I could import the music in
Vista, but kept getting errors with the videos [no, the problem wasn't
the DVD]. When I attempted to copy the videos to the hard drive, they
were corrupted and wouldn't play. I also copied the playlist files to My
Computer\Documents. They disappeared.

I tried to search for them. Vista has terrible GUI 'search' features.
Sure, I could use command-line, but the average user couldn't do that. I
finally copied files to a separate folder in My Computer, imported the
playlists, but never could get the videos to copy or import. I used my
MacBook to import the videos to his iPod.

I didn't have problems like that with any of my Macs. I wasn't in
unfamiliar territory. I've been using computers since long before MS-DOS
[was stolen by Gates].

[CGUYS] junk filter problem with Thunderbird

2008-09-26 Thread Nick
I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.17. For the most part it functions well
however when it comes to the junk filter, not so good. It keeps putting
legitimate email (some from important clients) in the junk mail folder.
No matter how many times I mark it as not junk and making sure their
email address is in my address books. This happens on both my PCs (Vista
and XP) and my iMac. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have found that the SchubertIt plugin does not work for me under
10.5.4. with either Safari or Camino.

I would sometimes come across PDFs that would not properly display
in Preview and I had to resort to Adobe Reader in those instances.

Re: [CGUYS] disk defrag vs disk clean-up

So, therefore, in view of this simile, it is a truly hopeless proposal
either way (in my case)...

Defragmentation takes the physical writing on the desk and puts it in
order. It moves files and rewrites the file table telling the system
where the file is located.

Disk Clean up cleans up your actual files and stem from temp files,
cache files and such.

Look at it this way.

Disk Clean up is like going through your house and picking up all the
loose stuff, and throwing out the trash/rubbish.

Defragmentation is like going through your house and figuring out a
better arrangement for everything in the house and rearranging the
whole house to make it more efficient.

I am sure there are some better technical explanations but this is
the easiest way I know how to explain it.

Stewart

Re: [CGUYS] junk filter problem with Thunderbird

2008-09-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The Junk mail feature in Thunderbird is less than optimal. That said,
two things I can recommend:

1. add the users address to your address book
2. Use the message filters for your clients to have their emails
automatically go to a subfolder

If those don't work you may wish to reset the junk mail training data
and let it start learning all over again b/c something got corrupted

ToolsOptionsPrivacyJunk is the menu path

Hope that helps,
JL

There's also something called PrimoPDF that lets you create PDFs. I
haven't compared it to Foxit PDF but it works okay for the price (the
full adobe is usually better but that's comparing it to the free version
of this product so not a fair fight).

Everything works fine, so I am going to follow the consensus and not
upgrade.
