Re: [CGUYS] Finding web stores overseas
I believe this is a pretty biased statement. I've bought some really great looking American junk. And I've bought some very long lasting Chinese products. I think it's company based and not nationality based when it comes to the quality of a product. Maydoff(sp) comes to mind. Regardless of the origin of the product, wouldn't you want to know you're making the best? That is unless your a soulless crook. For many, despite where they live, pride is still a factor. Using things like Nero's INCD and other methods leave you open to all sorts of problems like this. Might not be a matter of the disk erasing itself as the files were never really written to it in the first place. Windows delayed write is infamous for this. Re: [CGUYS] CD just erased by itself!
I routinely receive client cds that won't play in one drive. I have two on my machine, but before I give up on a cd I try all the other drives I can find in the house first. Clean it off too; sometimes just a good belly rub will get one to read. You'll probably want to offload all the data as soon as you can get it to read. Burning another disk may be problematic, if indeed your drive is losing alignment. If it's not a lot, but important, consider cloud storage - that's the safest these days. CDs are optical, not magnetic, media. The dye on a cd can be corrupted by temperature and light, but not an old style CRT monitor with it's magnetic field. LCD monitors do not generate these types of fields anyway as there's no high voltage involved. Re: [CGUYS] Crazy Adoption Rate for Snow Leopard
The day Snow Leopard came out, I looked at the compatibility list, didn't see any deal-breakers for me, and upgraded that day. Of course, I made very sure that my Time Machine was working and updated a clone of my hard drive just before upgrading just to be on the safe side. It was cheap, easy and safe for me to upgrade, so why not? Apparently, many users feel this way about it. I wasn't completely problem-free, but the problems were manageable enough that I didn't feel like I needed to revert, and all my issues seem to be fixed now. The main problem I had was with EyeTV which was listed as compatible but should have been listed as compatible with some issues. It would take so long to launch and get to the point of presenting a live TV window that for a while I thought it was hanging. Most users didn't have this problem, I was just unlucky. I eventually figured out that I needed to start the program a long time before I actually wanted it, and an update last week fixed the problem altogether. I really like Snow Leopard. To give just one example, I really like the control over Flash that I have in Safari on Snow Leopard. I can quit the Flash plugin process and not be bothered by annoying flash ads on any of my open pages. If I actually want flash content on a page, I just refresh the page. I don't regularly use layout or presentation software, so the font problem is not an issue for me, but it doesn't seem like a particularly big one for anyone. As I understand it, is only a problem with character spacing for Type 1 postscript fonts, and then essentially only for Keynote or QuarkXPress, and then only for documents created in Tiger or Leopard and moved to Snow Leopard. What other odd Snow Leopard behaviors have you been seeing or hearing about? Actually, it's Wrong to hijack other people's topics. You should have started a thread of your own with this question. Anyway, a quick correction. The tops of CD's aren't plastic, it's the actual foil on top. DVDs and BluRays have the foil snadwiched between plastic. I've used inkjet printable DVDs for the last few years, and am slowly switching to BluRay, but back when I used CDs I used Sharpies with no ill effects. Re: [CGUYS] Finding web stores overseas
High end electronics are not made in the USA they are more appropriately assembled in the US. Not always. Magnepan for example buys raw materials in the US and fabricates in-house. Even the resistors, inductors, and capacitors in the crossovers are US made. White Bear Lake, Minnesota. McIntosh (Binhamton, NY) and Cary (Cary, NC) also fabricate in-house. In Canada, Bryston Ltd (Ontario) does much the same, and offers a 20 year transferable warranty to boot. These aren't assemblers, they are factories, as in manufacturing facilities. These companies have been in business for a long time--37, 60, 20, and 35 years respectively. These companies (and others) have international reputations for quality craftsmanship and state of the art performance. This was formerly true of quite a few US industries, audio is one of the few survivors. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Most annoying thing is that the print options in most programs seem to have changed and there is no option in the File Menu for making a selection - it now is all or nothing. We had to update one peice of software. I think that was a Leopard change, and only in some programs. In Preview, for example, the default mini dialog box shows the printer name, presets, and buttons for print, cancel, preview and PDF. When you click on the little triangle to the right of the printer name, the dialog expands to many more very useful details. Does that help? [CGUYS] NPD: 12% of US computer owners have a Mac
*Not only do 12 percent of all U.S. homes have an Apple computer.* * * *• Mac owners have more computers than the average consumer, including other types of electronics such as iPods and navigation systems.* * * *• There is also a high correlation among Apple owners and more affluent consumer households.* http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/10/05/apple_takes_double_digit_home_pc_market_share_study.html Mac owners are computer savvy and affluent. The font problem is worse than you report. It messes up TrueType and OpenType fonts too. Some apologists for Apple say that you can just adjust the type specs to get spacing back to right, but these are hopeless programmers who know nothing about typography. There is a good reason why the acronym RTFM was invented. The manual is easily viewed online. As you later discovered there are many network specific conditions that call for different configurations. If you read the manual yourself, you can quickly get the right answer for your particular situation. Asking us to read the manual to you only leads to a long unnecessary back and forth. If there is something in the manual that you do not understand or that does not work as you expect then by all means ask here. Re: [CGUYS] Recommendations on Wifi N router?
Actually I had already read that... it's what came up when I googled the issue. But, other than the particular single stream models the article mentions, it still doesn't make it clear how to tell what's a single stream router when you are ordering from NewEgg or wherever... If the specs say the words Draft N compliant specifically does that mean it's MIMO N ? In the cheaper models I am looking at I am afraid I'll get single stream... I guess if it has two or three antennae I guess that would mean it is not single steam N ? Funny how many of the N's don't have a print or drive USB port also... db Tom Piwowar wrote: On Oct 5, 2009, at 2:00 PM, db wrote: How can you tell from the specs whether an N router is single stream or not? No matter how much it ruins your day, and mine, few people understand fonts or even need to be concerned. The death of print media has been announced prematurely. Font problems have been with us since monotype, no, since calligraphy, and persist in digital form, crashing apps, making layouts barely legible. Since it affects so few of us directly, the problems are fixed slowly, even though it has huge influence over any media that will be read--print or virtual. Hardly anyone notices except that things will be harder to read. Eh! Americans don't read much anyway, so they don't care. How long will it take to fix Snow Leopard? It's only been out a month. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
