Regardless of the origin of the product, wouldn't you want to know

I have not. I will not do so until certain apps I need are

Eighteen percent of Mac users are running Snow Leopard just one month
after its release, according to Web metrics firm Net Applications. That’s a
remarkable upgrade rate for the latest iteration of OS X, especially
considering Snow Leopard is Intel only. Overall, OS X now represents 5.12
percent of the worldwide OS market, up from 4.87 percent in August. While
that might seem like a small increase, it’s up 37 percent from a year ago,
and the platform is seeing a continuing a steady rise. In contrast, Windows
has now fallen below 93 percent, though the release of Windows 7 will likely
result in a temporary spike. Nonetheless, OS X is moving up, as is iPhone
 OS.

I've been running Snow Leopard since the weekend of the release. No real
problems but I skipped up from Tiger and it was starting to act up.

Most annoying thing is that the print options in most programs seem to have
changed and there is no option in the File Menu for making a selection - it
now is all or nothing. We had to update one peice of software.

I have an LCD monitor and i put the cd back in the case and set it a few inches

I save them to the cd...would it be better if I burned them on instead or it

Hi Terry,

It is by far better to burn data on a CD and make sure the disc is
finalized. Using things like Nero's INCD and other methods leave you
open to all sorts of problems like this. Might not be a matter of the
disk erasing itself as the files were never really written to it in the
first place. Windows delayed write is infamous for this.

Re: [CGUYS] CD just erased by itself!

2009-10-05 Thread Tony B
I routinely receive client cds that won't play in one drive. I have
two on my machine, but before I give up on a cd I try all the other
drives I can find in the house first. Clean it off too; sometimes just
a good belly rub will get one to read.

You'll probably want to offload all the data as soon as you can get it
to read. Burning another disk may be problematic, if indeed your drive
is losing alignment. If it's not a lot, but important, consider cloud
storage - that's the safest these days.

CDs are optical, not magnetic, media. The dye on a cd can be corrupted
by temperature and light, but not an old style CRT monitor with it's
magnetic field. LCD monitors do not generate these types of fields
anyway as there's no high voltage involved.

Re: [CGUYS] Crazy Adoption Rate for Snow Leopard

2009-10-05 Thread David K Watson

The day Snow Leopard came out, I looked at the compatibility
list, didn't see any deal-breakers for me, and upgraded that day.
Of course, I made very sure that my Time Machine was working
and updated a clone of my hard drive just before upgrading
just to be on the safe side. It was cheap, easy and safe for
me to upgrade, so why not? Apparently, many users feel
this way about it.

I wasn't completely problem-free, but the problems were
manageable enough that I didn't feel like I needed to revert, and
all my issues seem to be fixed now. The main problem I had was
with EyeTV which was listed as compatible but should have
been listed as compatible with some issues. It would take so
long to launch and get to the point of presenting a live TV
window that for a while I thought it was hanging. Most users
didn't have this problem, I was just unlucky. I eventually figured
out that I needed to start the program a long time before I actually
wanted it, and an update last week fixed the problem altogether.

I really like Snow Leopard. To give just one example, I really like
the control over Flash that I have in Safari on Snow Leopard.
I can quit the Flash plugin process and not be bothered by
annoying flash ads on any of my open pages. If I actually want
flash content on a page, I just refresh the page.

I don't regularly use layout or presentation software, so the font
problem is not an issue for me, but it doesn't seem like a particularly
big one for anyone. As I understand it, is only a problem with
character spacing for Type 1 postscript fonts, and then essentially
only for Keynote or QuarkXPress, and then only for documents
created in Tiger or Leopard and moved to Snow Leopard.

What other odd Snow Leopard behaviors have you been seeing or
hearing about?

Re: [CGUYS] CD just erased by itself!

2009-10-05 Thread Tony B
Actually, it's Wrong to hijack other people's topics. You should have
started a thread of your own with this question.

Anyway, a quick correction. The tops of CD's aren't plastic, it's the
actual foil on top. DVDs and BluRays have the foil snadwiched between
plastic.

I've used inkjet printable DVDs for the last few years, and am slowly
switching to BluRay, but back when I used CDs I used Sharpies with no
ill effects.

Re: [CGUYS] Finding web stores overseas

2009-10-05 Thread Eric S. Sande
High end electronics are not made in the USA they are more
appropriately assembled in the US.

Not always. Magnepan for example buys raw materials in the
US and fabricates in-house. Even the resistors, inductors, and
capacitors in the crossovers are US made. White Bear Lake,
Minnesota.

McIntosh (Binhamton, NY) and Cary (Cary, NC) also fabricate
in-house. In Canada, Bryston Ltd (Ontario) does much the
same, and offers a 20 year transferable warranty to boot.

These aren't assemblers, they are factories, as in manufacturing
facilities. These companies have been in business for a long
time--37, 60, 20, and 35 years respectively.

These companies (and others) have international reputations
for quality craftsmanship and state of the art performance.

This was formerly true of quite a few US industries, audio is
one of the few survivors.

When i load the cd and check the Properties of it on a right click, it shows

Re: [CGUYS] Crazy Adoption Rate for Snow Leopard

2009-10-05 Thread b_s-wilk

Most annoying thing is that the print options in most programs seem to have
changed and there is no option in the File Menu for making a selection - it
now is all or nothing. We had to update one peice of software.

I think that was a Leopard change, and only in some programs.

In Preview, for example, the default mini dialog box shows the printer
name, presets, and buttons for print, cancel, preview and PDF. When you
click on the little triangle to the right of the printer name, the
dialog expands to many more very useful details.

Does that help?

Mac owners are computer savvy and affluent.

Vs. Laptop Hunters, which M$ portrays as computer clueless and unable to

Yes, it is very confusing. Single-stream means it is not MIMO. N is

The font problem is worse than you report. It messes up TrueType and

The manual is easily viewed online. As you later discovered there are
many network specific conditions that call for different

manual to you only leads to a long unnecessary back and forth.

If there is something in the manual that you do not understand or that

That is unless your a soulless crook. For many, despite where they live,
 pride is still a factor.

Pride is still a factor and it gives me joy to see it. Many times I
have opened a white-box that I bought for the lowest possible price
and discovered a useful unique feature. Someone had thought about how
the product was being used and took the trouble to be helpful. They
did not have to do it. Since the feature was not advertised they got
no benefit from their extra effort, but they did it anyway. This is a
human, not a national trait.

Of late the USA has had more than its share of soulless crooks. Notice
how they howl as they are now being called to account. Got to clean

Actually I had already read that... it's what came up when I googled the
issue.

But, other than the particular single stream models the article
mentions, it still doesn't make it clear how to tell what's a single
stream router when you are ordering from NewEgg or wherever...

If the specs say the words Draft N compliant specifically does that
mean it's MIMO N ?

In the cheaper models I am looking at I am afraid I'll get single stream...

I guess if it has two or three antennae I guess that would mean it is
not single steam N ?

Funny how many of the N's don't have a print or drive USB port also...

No matter how much it ruins your day, and mine, few people understand
fonts or even need to be concerned.

The death of print media has been announced prematurely. Font problems
have been with us since monotype, no, since calligraphy, and persist in
digital form, crashing apps, making layouts barely legible. Since it
affects so few of us directly, the problems are fixed slowly, even
though it has huge influence over any media that will be read--print or
virtual. Hardly anyone notices except that things will be harder to
read. Eh! Americans don't read much anyway, so they don't care.

That's not the point. It was not broke and now it is. It represents
the generally slovenly attitude towards computing that the NeXTies
brought to Apple. The thing that makes M$ products so repulsive is
that they are created by eighty-percenters. Apple used to be a company
that would always sweat the details. They don't anymore.
