No I'm not going there. If you think learning to load film into a
developing tank is a useful skill, you are going to have to defend it.

I think it may have some useful background for chemistry and possibly the
optics portion of physics. Lots of science classes start by teaching the
arcana from the past. He may walk away with something useful but you might
never know what it could be.

I'm surprised that it continues only because of the expense of the
materials.

Re: [CGUYS] YouTube videos

2010-01-25 Thread Tony B
The Youtube encoding Help seems to start around
http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=55744 .

In general, you want to encode to .mp4 640X480 *progressive* (this may
be wrapped in a .mov on the Mac, I dunno). Unless there's a lot of
fast movement, you can save a lot of file size by using a lower
bitrate, maybe 4mbps or even lower.
http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=enanswer=132460

Note that the first thing Youtube does is re-encode your video to
Flash (7 I think). Sometimes this just looks awful no matter what you
do. If that's the case you may want to try a different service like
Vimeo instead. I'm not sure what Vimeo's reencoding to but it often
seems to give better quality. They've got a nice compression settings
page which you should read anyway. If you're really into it, be sure
to read the tutorials linked at the bottom.

[CGUYS] digital picture resizing

2010-01-25 Thread Tony B
In Windows there are lots of free apps like Picasa and Irfanview. But
since most of my members have broadband, I just recommend they use any
free online resizer.
http://www.google.com/search?q=free+online+picture+resizer

There's nothing tricky about making a huge digital pic smaller. Where
you may need special apps is when you try to *enlarge* pics.

What is the best process for resizing a digital photograph?  What application

job, but what if someone doesn't want to spring big bucks for CS and its ilk?

iMovie is not a mistake. Many podcast producers use iMovie because it can get
the job done much faster. It should be perfectly fine for YouTube.

You did not provide enough detail to judge what you problem really is.

Video is full size DV, 768x5.. SD.

Camera, Canon Elura.

File size, ~3.5GB.

Duration ~16 min.

I usually make these competition videos both iPhone size and DVD video.
Haven't posted competitions on YouTube before. I've already added
chapter markers, but if I export to QT those will probably disappear and
I'll have to split the video again. Oh, no, does this mean I have to RTFM!!

Go to Google’s home page or browser toolbar and type a single letter
into the search box. The search engine will then drop down a list of
suggestions, based on overall search activity... See who first on the
list.

I think it interesting that most of the top 10 listed terms for each
letter involve consumer goods. Shows what the Internet has become.

Here's another game. How few characters are needed to get yourself on

Re: [CGUYS] Networking Issue

2010-01-25 Thread Brian Jones

Problem solved... the simple way.
The customer had updated the wired device driver, but when she saw no
improvement, she reinstalled the original device driver.
Updating both the wired Broadcom driver and the Wireless driver together
solved the problem.
Since it is fixed, I was not able not gather the answers to Rocky Lee's
questions.

(No doubt this was a problem caused by Windows automatic update).

Brian,
1) If you disable the ethernet (local) connection ( not the drivers) for
the ethernet port are the results that there is no wireless connection or
that the wireless connection works

2) When both are plugged in and you issue an ipconfig command from a
command line, do both connections show up with valid IP addresses?

3) Does the ethernet local continue to have an IP address if unplugged?
