[CGUYS] welcome to thunderbird

2011-08-12 Thread gerald

vista, firefox, tbird, big computer with lots of free space.

once every couple weeks i get a tbird upgrade. seems even more
agressive than MS improvements. i get to the computer in the morning,
and it's there. a couple weeks ago, i got a sidebar calendar from
them. did not have much use for it, but really did not know how to
completely delete it.

about tues or wed, got another UG. few minutes later, got an email that
wanted display on firefox. attemped display crashed the computer,
pretty hard. after 3 hours of mucking around, and probably doing no
good at all, i was able to get firefox back up. could not open tbird.
went to the thunderbird site to look for reported problems. saw none.
google post mentions the calender sidebar causes some problems.

while at the tbird site, i downloaded and then ran the latest tbird.
all works. there is no sidebar calender at the moment.

[CGUYS] firefox 5.0

2011-07-26 Thread gerald
a while back i loaded firefox 3.xxx or 4.xxx and found my system was
very unhappy.
i poked around and found i had to eliminate some pop up blocker, or
something to mgenerate happines in my firefox. i just ended up with
firefox 5.0, and it is slow, and it crashes a lot. behaves like a beta
program. anyone know what is wrong, or what the fix is.

vista home, amd quaddraport in an acer, tons of memory, ati video, panda
antivirus.

it also happened about the same time i installed a usb 3.0 card and
seagate 3.0 drive(3.0 is not MS approved)

is very intrusive) AV. i use panda(?). it is also very non intrusive.

the f/w800 was an easy install. after all, there is a f/w800 plug on
the back of the screen.

the usb 3.0 is another matter. MS does not support usb 3.0. the pci
card did not want to load. the 3.0 driver did not want to load. i
think i finally have it loaded, but the device driver shows a 2/21/06
MS2.0 driver in the disk driver section,

in the usb controllersusb 3.0 root hub, it shows a VIA 1/7/2011 driver.

when i tested drive speeds by dumping a gig of jpegs, looks like i get
about 1GB per minute. the literature talks about 1 Gbit/sec. i think i
divide by 8 to get bites. that's about 40 gb/minute. need help to fix
the problem

[CGUYS] fios renewal was:Digital TV [Was: Broadband Speeds Map]

2010-04-27 Thread gerald slawecki
my promo fios ran its' course. so, since i had a really lot of time to waste,
i tried to renew online. i cannot renew on line, as i am an existing
customer. all packages on line are promo packages and are for new customers.

for the triple play(tv,computer, telephone), the telephone person gave me 3
options . lo,mid,hi:$120,130, and 145. two year package, with a $360 pro
rated early cancellation penalty. i had a $110 cost for the middle package.
the mid pack is 5/20 up/down. the hi pack was 30/30. big push (lots of sales
ups) to get me to get that wonderful speed. after starting on acoustical
modems, 5/20 seems pretty fast to me.

they will not show in writing what is in any of the packages. they will not
show in writing what is in the cancellation package(that's 360 bucks). i got
some verbal stuff, but did not tape it, and do not believe they would honor it
, anyway.

i had received a letter from verizon notifying me that my 130 promo mid package
was expiring, and going from 110 to 120. this has no cancel penalty. so i
took the mid package at 120.

i received an email conformation that i have renewed. my new mid pack is $125.

i just got a hard copy promo letter from Comcast for their triple play for
$99. anyone have this package? any ideas what is in the package in the way of
speeds and feeds and HD channels?

Re: [CGUYS] domain value

2010-04-04 Thread gerald slawecki
i have under $100 in it. does that mean i should sell it for 100, if it is
worth 1000 or 100,000? if i had, and was able to hold exxon.com, or coke.com,
should i sell them for the $100 i would have in them? some of these domain
name collectors have thousands of domain names, and they are not selling them
for $10 each.

Interesting problem. Anything over what you paid to registrars plus
the time it will take you to transfer it will be pure profit to you.
So you don't have to get that much to be ahead. If you insist that you
have to squeeze every last penny out of the deal, you will assuredly
end up unhappy no matter what you get. The idea that you could have
got $1 more will gnaw at you. If you ask for too much they will walk
and you get nothing.

Do you know anything about the buyer. Will this be a commercial
website? A rich non-profit? A poor non-profit?

I'm not sure what that is. I wasn't involved in the original purchase. I
do know we bought it from a small publishing company who had bought it for
one large project, then didn't need it anymore. It's at least 6-8 years

Our Widecom 936SLC single line contact scanner (also called a roll

bands). The last time something like this happened, it was a bent pin on
the SCSI cable. I've tried a new cable, with no luck. While I'm having
it checked out, I'm looking at other options. This is a 36 color
scanner. I'd appreciate any suggestions. tia.

Re: [CGUYS] LCD HDTV

2010-03-22 Thread gerald slawecki
i bought mine through buy.com a couple years ago. i think them a front for
corporate samsung. it was shipped airfreight fedex from CA to DC. i bought a
55 LED that is about 6-8 thick. it weighed around 100lbs in the crate.
fedex did not wait while i uncrated it, which took at least 15 min.

samsung has a nice chart and retail prices here:

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/tv-video/televisions/led-tv/index.idx?pagetype=subtype

i thought what i was buying was a LED-DLP. one of the reasons i bought the LED
was the bulbs in the rest of the dlp's have less than a 1000 hr half life.
that's not very long(1000hrs is 6 weeks).

our led is still running after two years, and i would guess 3 days a week x 6
hrs on. we listen to the cable music.guess that be about 2000 hrs.

broken screen; second TV was also damaged; third is fine. He's lucky that he
could arrange his job so that he could be home. You may not be so fortunate

my question is, can i get away with overrighting office 2003 with 2007. can i

Where do I find the file to save it? How to install in the new IE?

Favorites isn't a file, it's a folder. Look for it under your user folder
(same place as My Documents). Just transfer its contents to the Favorites
folder on your new system.

in the world of dot matrix, epson is tough to beat. they never established a

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/ProductCategory.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yesoid=-8182

they also have a clearance center.

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/BuyEpson/ccHome.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes

they claim 540 pages with their high output black cartridge.

have 4-in-1 inkjets which claim (and the salesperson did as well) get far
more pages per cartridge, and are actually cheaper per page (50% cheaper as
I recall the statement). Some of the models were on sale, at least that
week. I don't think I need color, at least not for current needs. So my
questions are: 1) any suggestions for a model of a reasonably priced
(under $200?) laser 4-in-1, and where to get one? Is this something to buy
online?

2) Anyone with experience with these supposedly improved, higher capacity
inkjet cartridges, and if so, whether this might be worth it over a laser
printer, all costs considered?
3) Is is it a good idea, if one can afford it, to get a color laser
printer, in case one has need for this in the future (maybe brochures,
flyers?)

4) Is the print quality on a laser noticeably better to today's inkjets?
Please don't suggest a Dell inkjet; I've had so much frustration with the
one I have now!

As always, I appreciate people with knowledge and experience on this list
taking the time to answer such questions!

some of the laser cartridges, particularly canon, or color are extremely
expensive. probably charge enough to make them more expensive than inkjet. i
know hp decided to get into that mode, and xerox one upped them. a full set of
full color cartridges cost more than the machine.

It's all a big distraction from the economic mess we have. Instead of trying

down the

Republican Bill Would Require Home Owners To Retain Internet Access Logs
By Jamie
http://crooksandliars.com/jamie/republican-bill-would-require-home-owners-re

Chalk this up as forcing you to become big brother:

Republican politicians on Thursday called for a sweeping new federal law
that would require all Internet providers and operators of millions of Wi-Fi
access points, even hotels, local coffee shops, and home users, to keep
records about users for two years to aid police investigations.

The legislation, which echoes a measure proposed by one of their
Democratic colleagues three years ago, would impose unprecedented data
retention requirements on a broad swath of Internet access providers and is
certain to draw fire from businesses and privacy advocates.

While the Internet has generated many positive changes in the way we
communicate and do business, its limitless nature offers anonymity that has
opened the door to criminals looking to harm innocent children, U.S. Sen.
John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said at a press conference on Thursday.
Keeping our children safe requires cooperation on the local, state, federal,
 and family level.

Joining Cornyn was Texas Rep. Lamar Smith, the senior Republican on the
House Judiciary Committee, and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who said
such a measure would let law enforcement stay ahead of the criminals.

Two bills have been introduced so far--S.436 in the Senate and H.R.1076 in
the House. Each of the companion bills is titled Internet Stopping Adults
Facilitating the Exploitation of Today's Youth Act, or Internet Safety Act.

So in essence, if you have a wireless router in your home then you would be
required to log all access to that router and keep those logs for two years.
Why? Because your neighbor might do something bad and use your internet
connection to do it.

What has me scratching my head is the situation of failure. What if my $50
Linksys decides to bite the dust after one year? Do I have to store that
router for another year to comply with this law?

How about people who have routers without logging, or that has very limited
logging that might only keep X number of records and couldn’t possibly store
the data for two years? Will these people have to go out and by new routers
now?

This legislation will really cause outcries from privacy advocates. Just the
idea that some people may have to go out and buy new hardware simply to become
a new “big brother” for our government is very troubling.

[CGUYS] TomTom software resolution

2009-02-08 Thread gerald
took the wife about 20 hrs to resolve the problem.

data is written from the sd chip to the tomtom memory and stored there. the
tomtom runs on the data stored in the memory. the backup is created from the
sd chip to a computer. wife had done that.

apparently, when tomtom builds these machine, they load the data directly to
the memory. the files on the chip were defective, so wife had a defective
backup.

she finally determined the defect when she realized the files on the computer
and the chip were the wrong size.

tomtom gave her the new software, and a year subscription for her troubles.

the files have grown, and barely fit on a 1 gig chip(890meg). is time to buy a
new chip.

[CGUYS] tomtom 510 died

2009-02-07 Thread gerald
sorry to interupt, but this really is computer related:

my wife's tomtom 510 died a slow death. she tried to add a feature, and the
only map that showed up was Guam(apparently a common problem). after she spent
the day with it she gave up and called and got through to tomtom tech support.
they told her to wipe the chip and reload. she did. now she got nothing on the
tomtom. the software is on the chip. her software is around version 6.5.

this is also a common problem. there must be a standard fix for a common
problem.

anyone else have the problem and get it fixed. she now cannot get through to
tech support.

It had nothing to do with a shortage, but they didn't want to pay the U.S.

[CGUYS] HOME OWNERSHIP

2009-01-31 Thread gerald

I am pretty sure 90% of those who lost their homes worked very hard for them
and got screwed and the full weight of the law must come down on the swindlers
who call themselves mortgage brokers and bankers.

wrong wrong wrong.

a very high percentage of the houses being foreclosed are not HOMES. i'm
pretty certain that even FNM/FRE allowed up to 4 home loans. takes a very
divided family to need 4 homes. this stuff belonged to either speculators,
or to innocents that decided to take their money out of their original home and
buy a bigger one, leaving behind a house/building.

CA,NV, AZ, and FL has a very high percentage of this. nobody wants to talk
about how many of the homes are spec owned.

either fnm or fre have 20,000 (forgot which) tenant occupied houses that they
are considering allowing tenant to stay. fre or fnm only have 5 total
foreclosed homes/houses in inventory. 90 % are not homes.

another large pile of the fnm/fre houses were not or even never occupied.
these are not homes. this is all spec investment.

i spec invested in houses a long time ago. could not get more than one fnm/fre
loan per house.

Yes that is quite a story, but I don't know. The reporter may be a bit
too innocent to be covering this story. A script on one server is not
going to whipe out 4000 servers. Yes it would have created a mess, just
not as big a mess as indicated.

Last I heard details of their servers group there it was well managed.
The fact that they had somebody else reviewing the programmer's work
shows that. But they should have done it sooner. Chaos and cut backs will
hurt even a well run IT operation.

Please elucidate.

Sam's Club is owned by Walmart. Since Sam Walton died Walmart has been the
epitome of a bad neighbor. They get tax breaks from local communities, often
paying no local tax, sell products below cost until the competition goes out
of business, mislabel products as 'made in US' when they're imported [not from
US territories either], make employees work off the clock, fire employees who
want to have a union, and underpay their employees so badly that many have to
apply for food stamps and state health care programs.

Worst, the Waltons, Alice Walton in particular, has been spending $millions
for lobbying to repeal the estate tax so they can keep all of their +$80
billions and not pay for the resources that gave Sam Walton the opportunity to
build his company in the first place.

Sorry, Stewart, et al, that you don't have choices where you live. Sometimes
we don't either.

i do not know what the standards are, and how they are set up, but a lot of
pdfs do not conform to adobe, and will not open.

tifs will open in windows photo gallery and can be edited. they are transparent

during summer season, prior to the Cheney administration, the mall was damaged
daily. not only did people walk on it, but there were about 50 softball games
a day, daily volleyball, rugby, soccer, basketball and whatever else needed a
field. weekly there was a polo(yeah, with real horses).

They still allowed and still do, in addition to that, the smithsonian
positively destroyed the place for a couple weeks or a month with some silly
festival. also a major activity or two every month(opera, 4th of july,
gathering for/against abortions, etc) if they would have only known, and paved
that thing from wall to wall when they had the chance. would have been very
cost effective.

Perhaps we should wreck the Mall on a monthly basis! Just think of
how we could grow the economy, constantly rebuilding it. Even more,
if we break all the windows in the the museums along the Mall too.

But, heavens no, don't let people keep more of their money. They'll
just bury it in old coffee cans in their back yard.

When you apply for a job have you been asked to present a Social Security
Card and a driver's license? That is a citizenship check.

that is totally incorrect.

No state requires citizenship, for a drivers licence, not even texas.

drivers licence in many states, MD included does not require a green card
and MD does not check. at least until very recently, anyone could get a social
security card. i have sponsored around 20 immigrants. all had driver licence
and social security card before the process was started. maryland wants 4 or 5
id's for drivers licence, but with a valid foreign passport, one can skate
around citizenship. if one has a valid I-94, one needs nothing else.

the Cheney administration wanted all companies to check all SS numbers of all
employees against citizenship/greencard records. they started that, but soon
discovered the two databases were incomparable, incomplete, and it took a very
long time to run through the hundreds of millions of SS numbers(none have ever
been deleted). early numbers, such as mine do not have any record of
citizenship. nobody cared in 1944 or 46, or whenever i got mine. they also
figured out(i think), that they did not want to open up access to the ss
database(good thinking, george).

i just looked, texas will also accept an i94 as primary id.

SATA HD Kit. I do not know the difference between SATA and IDE drives but
installed the new drive in the case without a hitch, plugged it in and my
Windows XP announced it had found new hardware, soon found the software for it
and said it was ready to go.

The drive does not show up in My Computer. So, following the instructions in
the leaflet that came with the case, I went to the Device Manager and there it
is -- the Western Digital drive (along with the internal drive and a second
external Maxtor drive). But it does not show up in My Computer. Several other
USB drives DO show up that are ports for data storage cards (Secure Digital
and a couple others) for use with transferring pictures from cameras directly
to the computer.

The leaflet that came with the SATA case said If the drive fails to mount
after you plug it in and turn it on, you may have to partition and format it.
Howevr, since I can't find it in My Computer I can't do that.

There's a CD that came with the case that says it's just for Windows 98 and ME
but I was tempted to try using it since in Device Manager I tried to update
the driver but XP said the current driver is the best it can find.

So ... I feel like I'm so close to making this work but yet so far away ...

My computer is a Dell Pentium IV 3 GHz with 1 GB RAM running XP Media Center
as the operating system.

One more thing, the case came with a SATA port and bracket that I could
install inside the computer but I'm hoping that's not necessary. I know many
of you would have had this up and running in 12 minutes so I hope you can tell
me what to do next.

As always, thanks in advance!

years of use we needed a new battery, and could not find a new battery

renewed the chemicals. Uh huh.]

Is there a list of equivalent, new cell phone batteries?

What do you do about keeping a phone after the battery doesn't hold a

lower ratings.

on initial instalattion, the comcast crew put wrong splitter/filters in our
entire neighborhood (only about 10 installs). big problem with dropping off the
internet. the third tech to come out checked signal strength at my modem. he
then replaced the filter/splitter. comcast then sent out a crew to replace all
f/s. in the neighborhood.

Yes, there are splitters with different impedance's. Cox has the cable
hitting the splitter and then the lowest impedance output (3.5db) of
the splitter along with the shortest run of cable going to the modem.
The higher impedance (7.0db) connections go to the TV sets. One time
after doing some maintenance the connections got mixed up and the Cox
help desk was able to see this through the modem signal strength
reading. I swapped the terminals back and the signal strength came
back up to normal. Here is an example of a similar splitter:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/3399

Regardless, your numbers seem abnormally low for cable on a regular
basis. Adding 30 to 40% by bypassing the TV isn't a solution. Tony is
probably right in suggesting that the bigger problem is more likely
outside your house, rather than inside. I had a similar issue and the
technicians found a bad connection at the pole and a shorting out
cable, both problems outside. Get a technician out there.

Richard P.

what can I conclude from these results for my comcast sold as 768up speed
 basic internet via cable?

 speedtest.net 1867u/145d NY.NY
 speedtest.net 1195/116 Newark,DE (listed preferred)
 frontier.net 1115/335
 voip.com 1004/361

do these results have any meaning? are they accurate? are there better
 places to check this?

there was a splitter installed by comcast to allow a tv about 10 feet
before my cable modem. I took it out and put in a bullet rated for over
3g and the speed went up about 30-40%. Was the splitter defective? Is
there some sort of splitter I can get that will better distribute the signal
as I want to hook up a tv near the computer? Can I hook the TV up somehow
behind my router instead of on the cable before it?

Re: [CGUYS] Computer backup software

a lot of people back up to a single external drive. i think this not a good
idea. i have not had good luck with external drive reliability. if possible,
back up to cd's or dvd's and grandfather them. for my company, we did a backup
every day just before closing. used append feature. dated each cd or dvd.
stacked them back on the spindle as they filled.

last year the state of Texas sent me a love note for not paying sales tax(my
company is in MD) for the past 7 or 8 years for $110,000 plus about another
100k in penalties. went back to 1999. i then got a bill from texas for
another 110k for not paying franchise fees. oh, and 100k in penalties. by
the time it was all said and done, texas wanted half a mil from me.

i dug out the spindles, created year end data, customer lists, etc for
1999-2007. hired a couple texas lawyers, and went about defending self. could
not have done it without the backups.

could not do it if i backed up external. data would be long gone.

backups were on win98, 2000 and xp. all were recoverable with backup my pc
to xp. this is very difficult if you used MS win 98 and win 2000 backup. i do
not think they talk to win xp backup.

it found a number of nuisance/background programs to remove, fixed a little of
this and that, and probably increased the speed of page loading in FireFox 3

CAVEAT: i had run a similar program a couple years ago. it found some 200
