Re: [CGUYS] External cases
There are two main different types of external cases. PATA and SATA. The polder drives that take the big flat cable and bog molex 4 pin power connector are PATA. The one you describe is an SATA drive. The PATA are what used to be called IDE drives. So you want a SATA external enclosure. Stewart At 12:26 AM 5/29/2009, you wrote: I've got an external case for 3 1/5 drives, but the area where you plug in the drive is a large 3 plug. The latest drives I want to use have 2 plugs, one about 1 1/2 and the other about 1. And then of course the little side plug that goes on the mounting bracket. My question is, when buying a new external case that will handle these new drives, what do I have to look for in its' description? The outside label of one of these drives simply says WD Caviar SE Serial ATA Hard Drive. It came out of my flat panel early version iMac G5. Re: [CGUYS] External cases
Thank you for this timely response. I wanted to order one tonight. But I didn't want to waste time by getting the wrong one. Now that you've brought it up, I do remember the drives I used to use where IDE drives. I've heard the ones used now called ATA, but also heard a bunch of other things as well. SATA, sATA and others I can't think of now. It all gets so confusing if it's not something you deal with everyday. Jeff M On May 28, 2009, at 10:58 PM, Rev. Re: [CGUYS] External cases
IDE==ATA==PATA - different from SATA. But if you can hold out, USB3 should arrive by the end of the year and will be faster than both. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] External cases
SATA=Serial ATA (PATA is parallel). The new version of SATA has been ratified at 6 gigabits/second (gbs)as well; no reason to wait for USB3. The new SAS (serial SCSI) is also 6 gbs. How is USB faster? Thank you, Mark Snyder -Original Message- IDE==ATA==PATA - different from SATA. You can either return it or do as my husband did when he accidentally ordered an SATA drive for a PATA FW enclosure. He got a cheap adapter for the drive from monoprice.com and it works fine [http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/26631.jpg]. It's better to be more careful when ordering and match enclosure to drive. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

And PATA is dying. Thank you, Mark Snyder -Original Message- ATA and IDE are the same...so then it's just PATA or SATA. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] External cases
I am not sure any computer manufactures make systems that use them much. On the last system I built even the DVD/CDR's are all SATA interfaced. Re: [CGUYS] External cases
Mostly what I have used is SATS to USB enclosures or adapters to run. I do not have many systems that have eSATA plug ins on my system and I have not added a card for it yet. It is supposed to be pretty much. I have done a lot of swapping with the USB drives but I usually stop services to them first to stop corruption. Re: [CGUYS] External cases
If it does, it would be 2.4gbits per second. I haven't seen any real world speed tests of USB3..have you? Re: [CGUYS] External cases
Thanks for the assurance and the link. I ended up getting this one: Antec MX-100 3.5-Inch USB Aluminum Enclosure for SATA Hard Drive Electronics; $31.24 Good to know I can buy an adapter if it's the wrong one.
