This has actually been tricker than was expected, mostly because people
don't really realize what their eye movements or blinks _really_ are.
Apparently people do both more than they think they do, which causes quite
a few unpredictable movements and clicks. Still, this is an area under very
active research, from what I understand.

I want a holographic screen I won't leave finger prints on when I use the
 touch based movements.

Again, I'm not entirely sure this is really what you want. We like the idea
of gestures in the air, but there has been some work to indicate that we
also like feedback and response. It is why you get so many people arguing
about the merits of a virtual keyboard vs an IBM Selectric keyboard.

And I want a girlfriend/wife/whatever that wants to watch whatever I want

I wonder if this is really what you want, too... or if it has to do with
something besides tv. {:

Re: [CGUYS] Apple Magic Mouse

2009-11-27 Thread David K Watson
I got a Magic Mouse as soon as I could, because my mighty
mouse's scrollball would get clogged up and need cleaning
annoyingly often. I agree that the Magic Mouse works much
better than the Mighty Mouse (now just Apple Mouse), and
I'd go so far as to say that it's the best mouse I've ever tried.

However, I can't really see adding any more gestures to the
Magic Mouse. It would be too easy to do a gesture by mistake.
Right now, I sometimes accidentally scroll when a finger grazes
the mouse or just gets too close. This is not particularly
disruptive to recover from, but the same probably wouldn't be
true for any additional gestures. The two-finger side swipes
for forward and back are ergonomically different enough
from the other gestures that you aren't likely to do them by
accident, but three- or four-finger gestures would simultaneously
be difficult to perform on an unanchored mouse and too easily
performed by accident.

I could however see a device that bears the same relationship
to the Magic Mouse that a trackball bears to a standard mouse,
that is, essentially a standalone multitouch trackpad with a non-slip
base. Then you could do all the 1,2,3, 4-finger gestures that you
can do with a multitouch trackpad and more besides. I could also
see a bigger version of this being popular with some handicapped
people.

[CGUYS] Apple Magic Mouse

2009-11-26 Thread t.piwowar
I just got to spend a day with a new Mac with the new Magic Mouse. It
only took a few minutes to get used to operating the screen by gliding
my fingers across its surface. Today I'm back to using an Apple Mighty
Mouse and I must say I'm annoyed. The Magic Mouse makes computing so
much easier.

I wonder if the number of gestures used to operate with this mouse
will grow rapidly. Seems to me that it could easily do so. That could
create a totally new way of interacting with the computer. I suspect
such a situation will enflame those on this list who are already quite
averse to change.

I just got to spend a day with a new Mac with the new Magic Mouse. It only
took a few minutes to get used to operating the screen by gliding my fingers
across its surface. Today I'm back to using an Apple Mighty Mouse and I must
say I'm annoyed. The Magic Mouse makes computing so much easier.

I wonder if the number of gestures used to operate with this mouse will grow
rapidly. Seems to me that it could easily do so. That could create a totally
new way of interacting with the computer. I suspect such a situation will
enflame those on this list who are already quite averse to change.
