[CGUYS] CD just erased by itself!
I had a data cd that i saved a few documents, emails on and my email addys and favorites for about 2 yrs. Now when i load the cd, it's blank! I have the things on the 'puter so i can put 'em back on. I have an LCD monitor and i put the cd back in the case and set it a few inches away...is the a small magnetic force that eventually wipes the cd? I save them to the cd...would it be better if I burned them on instead or it doesn't matter? Using things like Nero's INCD and other methods leave you open to all sorts of problems like this. Might not be a matter of the disk erasing itself as the files were never really written to it in the first place. Windows delayed write is infamous for this. Re: [CGUYS] CD just erased by itself!
I routinely receive client cds that won't play in one drive. I have two on my machine, but before I give up on a cd I try all the other drives I can find in the house first. Clean it off too; sometimes just a good belly rub will get one to read. You'll probably want to offload all the data as soon as you can get it to read. Burning another disk may be problematic, if indeed your drive is losing alignment. If it's not a lot, but important, consider cloud storage - that's the safest these days. CDs are optical, not magnetic, media. The dye on a cd can be corrupted by temperature and light, but not an old style CRT monitor with it's magnetic field. LCD monitors do not generate these types of fields anyway as there's no high voltage involved. Is it really true that one should only write on a cd with a marker labeled CD/DVD marker? The Sharpie I bought for that purpose doesn't really seem any different than regular Fine and Ultra Fine Sharpies -- just more expensive! :) --- On Mon, 10/5/09, Terry Kilburg kilb...@iowatelecom.net wrote: From: Terry Kilburg kilb...@iowatelecom.net Subject: [CGUYS] CD just erased by itself! Theoretically the CD/DVD markers have a chemical composition which is more safe in the long term for putting on plastic. db One Man wrote: Is it really true that one should only write on a cd with a marker labeled CD/DVD marker? Actually, it's Wrong to hijack other people's topics. You should have started a thread of your own with this question. Anyway, a quick correction. The tops of CD's aren't plastic, it's the actual foil on top. DVDs and BluRays have the foil snadwiched between plastic. I've used inkjet printable DVDs for the last few years, and am slowly switching to BluRay, but back when I used CDs I used Sharpies with no ill effects. Re: [CGUYS] CD just erased by itself!
Thanks John and Tony! When i load the cd and check the Properties of it on a right click, it shows all free space too. I know they were on there so maybe i will try it on my neighbors 'puter.
