You did not mention which version of the OS you are using.  I don't have a mac 
but I found this url
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1618

it applies to OS 9 so if you are using OS X then you might want to scour 
apple's kbase.

Error -42 is: tmfoErr (too many files open)
