Update ...read unending drop dead boring M$ notes and found I had to
reinstall faulty KB913670 contained in SP2 following which I had to
reinstall genuine validation tool and reinstall M$ installer following which
it's working again ...now all I need to do it dld SP3 (66mb) which should
take a week or so with my dialup connection (or else go park in neighbor's
driveway with laptop and get it on wifi)...weather is too hot here for
outdoor sports!!

I have found a fix for the error when trying to use live update.
I go to the url line and add an s to http to make it https
and I have over a 96% success rate..

Also, make sure that you go into options on your browser. and delete
all the temp files.

also, delete all the files in the windows\temp folder..

YMMV
