I've found the profile manager rather inconvenient and have instead relied
on setting up an alternate directory structure for conkeror with symlinks
back to all of the original files, except for application.ini which is
modified to use a different Name in place of conkeror.

I think that's something that changed in Firefox/XULRunner. There are
at least two bug reports in Debian about -no-remote having changed in
its meaning:

I suspect that the same counts for Conkeror with XULRunner 10 and
higher.
