Under the direction of the Conservation Librarian, the Conservation Specialist carries out a range of straightforward to complex physical treatments and repairs on the Library's specialized materials. The Conservation Specialist carries out treatments requiring a high degree of skill and/or independent judgment. The Conservation Specialist assists with the workflow management of materials in the Conservation Department and works closely with the Conservation Librarian both to review materials for preservation attention and to track Library items during treatment. The Conservation Specialist will assist with emergency preparation and response and will contribute to conservation outreach. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Hand skills in and knowledge of book conservation, binding techniques, and the creation of custom protective enclosures Specialized knowledge of book structures, historical methods of book production and printing, binding techniques, paper repair, and conservation practices. Strong proficiency with record-keeping and working familiarity with both Microsoft Word and Excel. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs., demonstrate proper care and handling of library materials, and sit/stand for long periods of time. Proficiency with written and spoken English. Ability to work independently Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with library personnel Ability to meet Level I Core Competencies as defined here: see Core technology Competencies (link to: http://library.tulane.edu/sites/library.tulane.edu/files/documents/core_technology_competencies.pdf) Required Education and/or Experience BA/BS and 3 years of directly related work experience performing conservation treatments in a library or comparable environment OR High school diploma/equivalent and 9 years of directly related work experience, including at least 3 years performing conservation treatments in a library or comparable environment. Formal training in a book conservation setting, such as through an apprenticeship or certification program. Preferred Qualifications Prior work experience in a library environment and with navigating bibliographic information. Familiarity with leather conservation techniques. Pay decisions are based on education, experience, skills and budget. The lower third of the range typically applies to less experienced candidates; the middle third for more experienced; and the upper range for those with exceptional qualifications and sustained performance.
