The Department of Conservation offers professional degree programs and research
on issues of cultural heritage, landscapes, cultural environments, buildings,
gardens, cultural historical objects, and interiors. In Gothenburg we offer
degree programs for building preservationists, conservators, and leaders in the
field of traditional handicrafts. In Mariestad we offer programs in building
construction, garden, and landscaping crafts. For more information, see
www.conservation.gu.se/english<http://www.conservation.gu.se/english>.
Collaboration is an important component of what we do—collaboration among the
different branches of the department, between degree programs and research, and
with the surrounding society nationally and internationally.

Conservation demands expertise in a broad range of knowledge that includes
fields in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences.

Subject area

Conservation with specialization in conservation science

Subject area description

At the department, research is currently being carried out in a wide field of
areas reflecting the interdisciplinary approach, which often also takes place
in close collaboration with the surrounding society with the aim of
strengthening the professional ability of the heritage practice field. Of
particular interest here is research based on a natural science framework aimed
at developing methods for material analysis and degradation studies based on
the utilization of different techniques to meet the need of knowledge arising
from conservation of cultural objects. The research within the framework of
this position as Senior Lecturer will be related to ongoing theoretical and
experimental activities at the department, but also to the ongoing work on
national level to establish a research infrastructure for Heritage Science.

As far as the department’s education activities are concerned, the Objects
conservation programme is relevant to highlight here. The education is
professionally oriented and aims to provide both theoretical and practical
knowledge and skills in preventative and operative preservation methods. During
the first three years (bachelor’s degree), a general focus is on cultural
objects. The last two years (master’s level), focus on in-depth specialisation
where conservation science is of strategic importance. The program's structure
and choice of courses aim at providing students with the necessary knowledge in
natural sciences and cultural history in a holistic perspective that makes them
well prepared for professional practice as a conservator. The education is
based on an interdisciplinary approach where natural and cultural sciences are
integrated.

Job assignments

The position includes planning and implementation of research and
methodological development in conservation science, focusing on material and
degradation studies using natural science methods. The research work involves
developing own research relevant to the department’s education and research
activities, and will largely be based on the ability to obtain external
research funding. The tasks includes, in particular, work with FTIR, GC-MS,
ICP-MS, XRD, Raman, XRF, μfading, multi / hyperspectral techniques and SEM-EDX,
where collaboration nationally and internationally for establishing research
infrastructure for heritage science is significant.

The assignments also include teaching and supervision in the methods mentioned
above, as well as planning courses, course responsibility and course
development on both basic (graduate) and advanced (master) levels. Guidance and
supervision of students in their graduation thesis works are also included.
Teaching in postgraduate education and the department’s other programs and
courses, as well as laboratory activities and other duties at the department
may occur.

The work also involves developing consultancy-based activities in material and
degradation studies to support the needs of the practitioners, both nationally
and internationally.

In addition to thorough knowledge and long experience in conservation science,
the position places great demands on planning and collaboration skills, social
skills, flexibility and creativity.

The applicant is expected to be able to teach in Swedish in two years. The
university offers courses in Swedish as a second language.

Applicants without university-level teacher training should participate in
pedagogy courses for higher education within two years of hiring.

Eligibility

The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the
Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the
University of Gothenburg. The applicant should have a PhD in an area relevant
for the position. Ability to teach in English or Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment

In assessing an applicant’s qualifications, scientific skills are the most
important grounds for evaluating applicants, and secondly on pedagogical
skills. Both will be assessed with the same accuracy.

When assessing the scientific proficiency, emphasis is placed on the
applicant's competence in conservation science, primarily documented through
publications in scientific journals with internationally recognized peer review
procedures. The assessment is also based on the supervision of PhD students,
success in obtaining external research funding in national and international
competition and proposed research plans. A basis in natural science and
interdisciplinarity, as well as experiences from work with FTIR, GC-MS, ICP-MS,
XRD, Raman, XRF, μfading, multi / hyperspectral and SEM-EDX are important.

In assessing the pedagogical skills, the applicant must demonstrate documented
experience of teaching at university level in conservation science and special
emphasis will be placed on experience in planning, organizing and leading
courses. Experience in supervising students, education administration and
course evaluation and examinations is meritorious.

Experience in work across professional boundaries and / or interdisciplinary
co-operation, leadership experience and documented ability to develop
consultancy activities aimed at the field of practice is of merit.

The overall assessment of the applications will take into account proficiency
and potential for development, ability to carry out the duties of the position,
cooperate with others, and contribute to a positive development of the
department. The overall assessment will also take into account the extent to
which the applicant’s research plans are complementary to and strengthen the
activities at the department.
