Speaker: Alberto Campagnolo, CLIR/DLF/Mellon Fellow for Data Curation in
Medieval Studies at the Preservation Research and Testing Division of the
Library of Congress, Washington, DC

In the last few decades, the recording and management of documentation data
about material objects, including bookbindings, has switched from paper-based
archives to databases, but sketches and diagrams are a form of documentation
still carried out mostly by hand. Diagrams can present unique information, but
often also serve as a visual representation of information recorded in the
written documentation. This project proposes a methodology to harness verbal
information stored within a database -- with a focus on bookbinding structures
-- and automatically generate standardized and scholarly-sound visual
representations.

[Consdistlist] Call for Papers Conservation of Ceramics, Glass and Enamels Conference, Oxford

2017-03-13 Thread Jasmina Vuckovic
Call for Papers Conservation of Ceramics, Glass and Enamels Conference,
Oxford

The Icon Ceramic and Glass Group Conference 2017 will be held at Oxford, on
Friday the 8th September. The conference theme is intentionally broad to
encourage papers on the widest possible range of materials and treatments
within the context of ceramics, glass and enamels.

We would like to see abstracts from conservators (and conservators to be)
who have come across challenging projects or those where you might have had
to take a different approach to a standard procedure. Interesting case
studies, which are useful to others, are strongly encouraged.

We are pleased to say that a small contribution to speakers’ expenses is
available.

This is also a *call for student posters* within the above theme and
suggestions.

The conference sits comfortably next to Oxford’s Open Doors weekend. This
may serve as an inspiration to speakers or an added feature to the overall
event.

*Deadlines:*

Please send abstracts by 7 April 2017 to the Ceramics and Glass Group
.

icon...@gmail.com

Abstracts for paper and posters should be 250-300 words and include title,
names, addresses and e-mail addresses of all authors and indicate author
for correspondence.

[Consdistlist] The structure and mechanics of canvas paintings / 25-27 October 2017 by by Laura Fuster-López and Cecil Krarup Andersen

2017-03-13 Thread Goossens , Angèle
The University of Amsterdam organizes in October 2017 the course The structure
and mechanics of canvas paintings.

This course provides a basic understanding of structural and mechanical
properties of materials that are relevant for paintings and how these
properties change with different relative humidity and temperature. This
enables improved risk assessment when deciding on climate and conservation
methods for simple materials and composites. An overview of the relevant
research is provided and the effects of conservation evaluated. The core of the
course is based on Marion F. Mecklenburg's work as well as the lecturers' own
research and both lecturers have extensive experience in teaching conservation
students as well as post graduate conservators. They have both worked closely
with Mecklenburg and have assisted him teaching his course on mechanics and
structure in cultural heritage materials both at the Universidad Politécnica de
Valencia (Spain) and the School of Conservation (Denmark) respectively.

This course is given by Laura Fuster-López and Cecil Krarup Andersen.

Dates: 3 fulltime days: 25, 26 and 27 October 2017.

Registration is open to restorers, conservation scientists and related
professionals practicing within the field.

Venue: Ateliergebouw in Amsterdam.

Programme (with reservation)

Day 1: Mechanical properties of paints, primers and carriers
Morning:

-Introduction

-Material science -and the three step approach to conservation.

-The response of the materials to change in T and RH (wood, linen,
rabbit-skin glue, sturgeon glue and gelatin, oil, alkyd and acrylic paints).
Afternoon:

- The three step approach in praxis. Discussions and presentations in
groups.

Day 2: Structural properties of paints, primers and carriers
Morning:

-The stress-strain curve and the definition of the mechanical
properties.

-Mechanical properties of: wood, linen, rabbit glue, sturgeon glue and
gelatin, oil, alkyd and acrylic paints.

-The relationship between the mechanical properties and dimensional
response of materials.

-The consequences if materials with different structural properties are
combined in a legacy object. What are the implications for changes in RH and
T?.

-Other failure mechanisms: Causes for degradation far beyond RH and T.
Afternoon

- The choice of materials. Discussions based on case studies

Day 3: Changing structure and mechanics of objects through conservation
Morning:

-Adding lining materials.

-The structural role of adhesives and the effects of solvents.

-The selection of filling materials.
Afternoon:

-The choice of methods. Discussions based on case studies.

[Consdistlist] Exhibition of paper negatives survey - response requested

2017-03-13 Thread Lénia Fernandes
I am currently writing an article on the history of the exhibition of paper
negatives, to present in a conference late this year. One of my goals is to
evaluate which light sources conservators are using, especially when the
negatives are backlit.
Although it can be relatively easy to find information on exhibitions
featuring paper negatives (in exhibition catalogs and/or in some online
collection websites), there is less information available out there about
how that was done. The published case studies are surely only a fraction of
what is done in practice to exhibit these objects. That is why I ask for
your contribution.
Please take a few minutes to answer ten questions about this theme, whether
you have worked or seen an exhibition featuring paper negatives. The survey
is available until April 30, 2017, on:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/75XPW7S

Feel free to share the link colleagues you think might be able to help as
well.
If you have any comments or questions, please send an email to
lenia...@gmail.com.
Thank you in advance for participating.
