[Consdistlist] Conference in Memory of Professor Sharon Cather, York 16-18 April 2020

2019-08-15 Thread Austin Nevin
Following the preliminary announcement sent out by Robyn Pender and Sophie
Godfraind in June, there has been so much interest in the conference
planned to celebrate Sharon Cahter’s life and achievements that it has been
decided to make this a more ambitious event in spring 2020.The conference
will now take place on 16-18 April 2020 in York (UK), in the impressive
surroundings of the Tempest Anderson Hall of the Yorkshire Museum, the
Hospitium (medieval guesthouse) in the famous 19th-century gardens of the
Museum, and the adjacent King’s Manor of the University of York. Starting
on the afternoon of Thursday 16 April, the conference will continue until
the early evening of Saturday 18 April. Further details of the programme
and practical information will be provided in due course.
The theme of the conference (and follow-up publication) will be Wall
Painting Conservation and its Dilemmas in the Twenty-first Century: A
Conference in Memory of Sharon Cather. Sharon’s colleagues will all be
aware of her constant questioning of received wisdom in the conservation
field, and of her success in pushing the boundaries in a multitude of areas
from preventive conservation to conservation education. It is therefore
felt appropriate that this conference in Sharon’s honour should take stock
of the current state of wall painting conservation internationally, and
consider potentially productive developments in the future.
Regrettably, even over two and a half days, the number of papers will need
to be limited to about 18. Many have already been offered, and others are
now invited. It is intended that collectively the contributions will cover
all periods of wall painting from ancient to contemporary, and that all
will take the opportunity of reflecting on the type of issues that were of
such concern to Sharon. Such factors will be taken into account in the
selection of papers, and speakers will also be asked kindly to provide a
firm commitment to contributing to the follow-up publication. I will now be
in touch with those who have already generously offered papers, and much
look forward to hearing from others who wish to do so. Do please also
contact David Park (david.p...@courtauld.ac.uk) if you have any other
questions at this point.

[Consdistlist] The 7th International AFR (Architectural Finishes Research) Conference Call for papers, Tel Aviv 2020

2019-08-15 Thread AFR2020
Studio Tchelet and The David Azrieli School of Architecture at Tel Aviv
University, will be hosting the 7th International Architectural Finishes
Research Conference in Tel Aviv, 14-15-16 October, 2020.
Previous conferences have defined research into these finishes as
Architectural Paint Research (APR). We believe it is time to expand the
definition of our research to include all architectural finishes. For this
conference we will be addressing it as Architectural Finishes Research
(AFR).

The 2020 AFR Conference organizing committee is sending out Call for papers
and posters for its next conference. Call for papers and submitting
instructions can be found at https://www.afr2020tlv.org/call-for-papers

Topics should ideally include but are not limited to:

1. Multidisciplinary AFR research, documentation and study - Studies using
a multidisciplinary research method, integrating cultural, historical,
investigative, material and any other discipline used in the process of
understanding and documenting a historic architectural finish in the built
environment.

2. Historical Architectural Finishes – Studies in which Architectural
Finishes research has shed new light on history, by revealing and studying
layers, traditional materials and traditional techniques. Cases in which
developing and/or new technologies and techniques have altered existing
knowledge.

3. Microscopic Examination of Historic Architectural Finishes – Studies
involving new techniques or reanalysis of existing data to further our
understanding of historic finishes and their use.

4. Murals and color systems in sacred spaces – Projects and research in
conservation and preservation in places of worship. One area of
investigation is how conservation and preservation techniques and methods
have been affected by the cultural and/or religious surrounding in which
they were undertaken.

5. Sgraffito – case studies of Sgraffito conservation; materials,
techniques, themes, styles and preservation.

Submission deadline is October 15, 2019.

We invite submissions from AFR specialists and advanced students, as well
as members of related disciplines including art conservators, preservation
architects, decorative painters, heritage managers and material scientists.

[Consdistlist] Last call for survey participants - period room preservation

2019-08-15 Thread Brandi Pomfret
To my colleagues -

I am currently writing my dissertation on period room displays, in fulfilment
of a Master in Arts in Preventive Conservation from Northumbria University, UK.
As the due date is rapidly approaching I wanted to extend a final call for
participants - whether new or as a reminder for those who took part but saved
their progress part-way through to return at a later date - before closing the
survey.

My research has shown that literature on the topic tends to focus on the
Curatorial and Educational importance (or drawbacks) of the period room, rather
than the Conservation implications involved. My goal is to focus on the methods
of preservation employed, including when and how certain measures may take
place, specifically for rooms that have been removed from their original
setting and installed in an American museum. In order to ensure thorough
research and investigation into the methods of conservation and preventive care
used in these rooms, I have developed a survey which I am circulating to
American institutions (historic houses and open-air museums count as well as
the traditional arts and/or decorative arts museum).

If you work in an institution with one, or multiple, rooms in your collection,
your participation would be much appreciated. The survey itself should only
take 15-20 minutes (though there is also an option to save and continue later),
and focuses on topics as varied as lighting, textile reproduction, and visitor
access. All personal data will be kept anonymous, and will help immensely
with research on the topic.

The survey can be found here:
https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/PeriodRoomPreservation/

My immense thanks for your consideration.

Best,
Brandi Pomfret

[Consdistlist] NATCC Call for Board Members

2019-08-15 Thread Amanda Holden
Dear Colleagues,

NATCC (North American Textile Conservation Conference) is a not-for-profit
(501(c)3 organization that was formed to improve the quality of textile
conservation by sponsoring biennial conferences and publishing the papers from
those conferences. Currently, we have two board positions open and we are
inviting applications from our North American colleagues to join the 12-member
board of NATCC.

As specified in the NATCC Bylaws, new Directors are elected by a majority of
the Board to serve a 4-year term. Board members, who must be practicing textile
conservators, curators, or scientists, are responsible for the organization of
the biennial conferences. The NATCC Board meets twice per year, once during the
AIC Annual Meeting and once at another time and place agreed upon by the Board.
During a biennial conference year, the second meeting generally occurs on the
day after the conference. The language of business for the Board is English.
NATCC is unable to reimburse Board members for travel expenses associated with
attending Board meetings.

We are especially interested in bringing our meetings to a wider geographic
area, which requires regional board members to serve as the nucleus for the
local committee. With that in mind, we would like to hear from our colleagues
throughout Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Among the qualifications that
the NATCC Board is seeking are - a proven ability to work collaboratively,
fluency in Spanish and/or French, South/Central American affiliations,
institutional support, and/or previous Board experience.

Those interested in serving on this congenial Board should write a letter
describing their experience, qualification and statement of interest. Please
send this letter and curriculum vitae to: Christine Giuntini, NATCC Secretary,
christine.giunt...@metmuseum.org.
Letters are due by September 9, 2019; the Board will announce its decision by
October 1, 2019.

We invite you to contact any current Board member for more information:

[Consdistlist] Information about the ConsDistList move

2019-08-15 Thread Bonnie Naugle
Dear ConsDistList subscribers,
I hope to send you weekly updates and reminders about the move from this
platform on CoOL to our new home on the AIC and FAIC Online Community (which is
at https://community.culturalheritage.org). The timeline for this move is early
to mid-September.

Staff members of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) are managing the
technical aspects of this transition, alongside moderator Scott Devine and
FAIC's Digital Strategies Advocate Matt Morgan. You may recall that the list
will be renamed the "Global Conservation Forum." Scott has agreed to send the
posts as a daily email unless you request a weekly subscription.

The new platform is more closely tied to AIC, and you may receive communication
about this move from the email address cont...@culturalheritage.org. When we
launch the new forum, the digests will be sent from AIC and FAIC via
donotre...@connectedcommunity.org. This is the platform's email address. Please
add these addresses to your approved senders list.

Over the next few weeks, you will receive an email based on your database
record history with us:

1. If you have created a profile in the past 6 to 10 years, perhaps by being an
AIC member, donating to FAIC, purchasing something in our online store, or
registering for an event, you are likely still in our system. You will receive
an email from cont...@culturalheritage.org with instructions on updating your
profile for your ConsDistList subscription.

2. If you have not interacted with AIC or FAIC (aside from joining this list),
you will receive an email with instructions to create a profile in our database
for your ConsDistList subscription.

Please write with any questions!

Best,
Bonnie

[Consdistlist] Please take part: Short survey - Managing Preservation / Enabling Access (Aoife Larkin)

2019-08-15 Thread Events
I am a Masters student studying Preventive Conservation with Northumbria
University, UK.

Research: Many collections aim to increase and broaden physical engagement with
their special collections (e.g. research, demonstrations, display, lending) but
handling presents one of the greatest risks of degradation. This survey aims
to identify and quantify the various ways in which different organisations
manage physical access to their collections, with the view to asking how such
physical access could be better supported.

Do you work for an organisation with a collection of historic books? Or more
generally, is handling/direct access to your collections key to your
organisation's outreach/values? If so, your feedback will be very valuable to
this study.

Below is a link to an electronic survey which takes approximately 3 minutes to
complete. If you would like to take part in this study, or you know someone
else who it could be relevant to, please click on or share the link.
