The National Library of Scotland Clothworkers' Internship
12-month Internship starting September 2019
Location: The National Library of Scotland
Educational Stipend: £17,000

This conservation internship is possible through the generous support of the
Clothworkers' Foundation.

This internship represents a first for the National Library of Scotland, being
focused in Preventive conservation.

Working under the supervision of the Head of Collections Care, the internship
will provide an opportunity to review and refine preventive conservation
practices at the Library, to create new preventive conservation guidance and
procedures as well as offering the opportunities to support research into other
areas for development such as benchmarking against good practice in other
organisations; reviewing conservation standards and guidelines; and testing
materials and equipment.

The objectives of the internship will be for the intern to develop an in-depth
knowledge in preventive conservation by undertaking a range of projects in the
core areas of preventive conservation, such as:

- Environmental monitoring and control;
- Integrated Pest Management
- Pollution monitoring;
- Disaster planning and preparedness;
- Storage improvements;
- Improving handling practices;
- Packing and transportation, including courier work, and
- Exhibition materials and design.

The intern will work across the Library's collections of books, maps,
manuscripts, archives and pamphlets; including ephemera such as leaflets,
flyers and posters, and also covering the Library's collections of paintings
and sculptures, textiles and artefacts. In particular, we will ask the intern
to investigate and devise preventive conservation strategies for some of the
more unusual or challenging items in our collections, and to research and
devise improvements to promote the sustainability of our exhibition mounting
and display practices, such as degrading plastic posters, possible pigment
alterations in manuscripts and disintegrating wet letter press books.

The successful applicant will have a recognised conservation qualification and
will actively be seeking a career in preventive conservation. S/he will relish
working in Scotland, and be a highly motivated, reliable and resourceful
individual with outstanding interpersonal skills. Strong IT and
organisational skills are essential.

Please apply using the application form on the Icon website only.
