Full-time paid position as paper conservation intern /technician /studio 
assistant available at Andrea Pitsch Conservation, New York City.

This position is available late May/early June 2018 for at least one year and 
can be extended as mutually agreeable. If you currently live in New York, it is 
possible to begin work earlier on a part-time, freelance basis.
Located in midtown Manhattan, APC has provided paper conservation and 
consultation services since 1985 to an international clientele of museums, 
artists' estates, galleries, and corporate and private collections. The 
treatments undertaken at APC must adhere to the exacting standards and demands 
of the New York art community, which depends on us to provide the highest level 
of service.
Treatments are interesting and varied; objects include original works on paper, 
fine and historic prints, posters, documents, historic maps, photographs, and 
parchment. Approaches range from routine stabilization to complex treatments of 
idiosyncratic contemporary objects. 
The intern will work directly with the senior conservator/ owner. 

Range of duties:
- Paper conservation treatment including surface cleaning, mending and filling 
of losses, hinge and tape removal, backing removal, humidification and 
flattening, inpainting, and generally assisting with any treatment processes as 
needed.
- Studio organization and maintenance.
- Written and photographic documentation.
- Wrapping artworks for shipping and local transport
- Unframing and refitting 
- Handling large contemporary prints greater than 40x60" in size and securing 
them in portfolios weighing 30 pounds or more.

Qualifications and desirable previous experience:
- Interest in paper conservation as a career, preferably with a plan to pursue 
a graduate degree in a recognized program.
- Background education in art history, studio art and/or chemistry.
- Previous experience in a paper conservation laboratory. 
- Familiarity with framing works on paper, hinging and matting, 
- Experience making safe packages for shipping and local transport
- Required are good manual dexterity, powers of observation, ability to focus 
on detail, ability to exercise critical thinking and common sense, good 
organization skills, ability to communicate clearly, willingness to take 
direction and carry out accordingly, and a solid work ethic.
