Following the preliminary announcement sent out by Robyn Pender and Sophie Godfraind in June, there has been so much interest in the conference planned to celebrate Sharon Cahter’s life and achievements that it has been decided to make this a more ambitious event in spring 2020.The conference will now take place on 16-18 April 2020 in York (UK), in the impressive surroundings of the Tempest Anderson Hall of the Yorkshire Museum, the Hospitium (medieval guesthouse) in the famous 19th-century gardens of the Museum, and the adjacent King’s Manor of the University of York. Starting on the afternoon of Thursday 16 April, the conference will continue until the early evening of Saturday 18 April. Further details of the programme and practical information will be provided in due course. The theme of the conference (and follow-up publication) will be Wall Painting Conservation and its Dilemmas in the Twenty-first Century: A Conference in Memory of Sharon Cather. Sharon’s colleagues will all be aware of her constant questioning of received wisdom in the conservation field, and of her success in pushing the boundaries in a multitude of areas from preventive conservation to conservation education. It is therefore felt appropriate that this conference in Sharon’s honour should take stock of the current state of wall painting conservation internationally, and consider potentially productive developments in the future. Regrettably, even over two and a half days, the number of papers will need to be limited to about 18. Many have already been offered, and others are now invited. It is intended that collectively the contributions will cover all periods of wall painting from ancient to contemporary, and that all will take the opportunity of reflecting on the type of issues that were of such concern to Sharon. Such factors will be taken into account in the selection of papers, and speakers will also be asked kindly to provide a firm commitment to contributing to the follow-up publication.
