Answer to Isobel Griffin, message 3:

3. archival ink (Griffin, Isobel)

I have been using the Actinic Ink: you can do a Google search and you will find
several suppliers in Europe. It is available in two versions, one for stamping
and one for writing (for ex. inventory numbers); each one has its own small
kit, like a stamp pad and a pen: don't try to use it with normal stamp pads.

It is not much easier to use than LOC one, but if you are looking for an
alternative I think it is worth trying.

Best regards

Dear Subscribers,
Now that we have returned, you will notice the ConsDistList temporarily has a
different look and organization:
- Posts are now numbered by order of receipt.
- Posts are no longer organized by topic; to skip to a particular message, you
can use CTRL plus F to find the message by its number (for example, to find
message 5, press Control and F, then type Message: 5).

AIC and its Foundation are entering a period of technical change, and are
focusing on performing ongoing strategic upgrades to our systems. This change
has reduced the daily workload required to administer the ConsDistList and will
result in it reliably being delivered on a weekly (or twice weekly!) basis.
Future steps will see upgrades that bring new capabilities, taking advantage of
the support of the Foundation ? and your recent donations. We hope you also
visit the new ConsDistList archives page, linked at the bottom of each digest
(searchable and immediately updated).

A good list still takes work by actual people, on both the submission and
moderator sides. We really appreciate your efforts to shape your posts for
general consumption before sending to the list. We hope you continue to value
your subscription to the ConsDistList.

Anna Plowden Trust: grants for continuing professional development

In addition to offering bursaries for conservation students, The Anna Plowden
Trust (http://www.annaplowdentrust.org.uk
<http://www.annaplowdentrust.org.uk/>) awards grants to conservators ? from
both private practice and institutions ? to help support their continuing
professional development (CPD). This can include the acquisition of new skills
or expertise through short courses and conferences. Grants are normally awarded
to cover a proportion of the course fees or conference registration. Recipients
are expected to make a short report to the Trust on completion of their CPD.

As our funds are heavily over-subscribed, we do not award CPD grants to
students or interns and we normally give preference to applicants who are
making ? or intend to make ? their careers in the UK.

Grant applications are considered four times a year: the deadlines for
applications in 2017 are 12 January, 22 March, 5 June and 14 September. Full
details, including application forms, can be found on the Anna Plowden Trust
website (<http://>www.annaplowdentrust.org.uk/applying-to-us/cpd-grants
<http://www.annaplowdentrust.org.uk/applying-to-us/cpd-grants>).

We would like to know about any work other people have done to test inks for
making an ownership mark on Library collections. Ideally ink should be stable
in water and organic solvents, difficult to remove by abrasion, not subject to
colour change over time and easy to apply, even on glossy paper. We are aware
that the Library of Congress produce an archival ink, but we are looking for
alternatives because our staff find it very difficult to use.

In response to Melanie Sorenson?s posting on the effects of soluble nylon on
18th century paper, the article by Catherine Sease, "The case against using
soluble nylon in conservation work", Studies in Conservation, vol. 26, no.
3, pp. 102-110, 1981, would be a good starting point.

Regarding anecdotal experience, I have never used this material so can only
provide hear-say information. Apparently it was sometimes applied in
solution and sometimes as a gel (when applying a facing paper for example).

During construction at a client site to install environmental management and
fire protection improvements, a trench was opened on the grounds in which
several objects were found including a c. 1900 glass beer bottle with thick
brown sludge at the bottom.

My client thinks that the sludge is tobacco spit (molasses looking, though
tobacco smelling) and would like to remove it. (BTW: I have not seen the item
nor have I been involved in the discussions about cleaning - although in my
initial email yesterday I did mention that the sludge may have some
significance and in some collections wouldn't be removed.)

They have already tried to remove the sludge: first by soaking with just warm
water and light swishing which removed some, and have tried warm water and a
few drops of Dawn dish soap, which reportedly didn't do much at all. They are
worried that aggressive scrubbing might break the glass and have asked that I
send this query to the DistList for additional suggestions.

Many thanks.

In reply to Melanie Sorensens enquiry, I can supply a quantity of unused white
soluble nylon Calaton CB powder that has been dry/dark stored since the late
1970's. It no longer shows any sign of solubility in ethanol, or even swelling.
This might be a useful material for the NLA research team to test solvency.
I will be in Canberra next week (10th-14th October) to attend the Book and
Paper Symposium, where I am giving a paper. If you contact me there, I will
have a jar of the powder for you

Employment Opportunity:
NEDCC SEEKS MANAGER OF AUDIO PRESERVATION SERVICES
********************************************************
The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) seeks an experienced audio
preservation professional to lead its expanded Audio Preservation Services
program. The new Manager of Audio Preservation Services will manage the
day-to-day operations of the Audio Preservation Services department, which will
use both the IRENE technology and traditional methods for digitally

digital audio tapes, and unusual formats (e.g., tin foils, Dictabelts, etc.).
EXPANDING AUDIO SERVICES:
NEDCC is in the process of expanding its digital audio preservation service for
libraries, archives, and museums. This service will build upon NEDCC's
successful implementation of "IRENE," the IMLS-funded optical scanning
technology developed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the
Library of Congress for digitizing grooved audio carriers.
NEDCC is now investing in the additional facilities, equipment, and staffing to
offer reformatting of audio content on magnetic and other obsolete media using
more traditional approaches. NEDCC acknowledges the generous support of The
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for underwriting both the business planning for,
and the implementation of, its full audio preservation service.

Applicants should have: 1) detailed knowledge of, and hands-on experience in,
all aspects of digitally preserving audio collections; 2) strong communication
skills in listening to clients' needs and clearly articulating proposed
specifications; 3) excellent relationship-building skills; 4) strong
production, management and supervisory skills to lead the staff in achieving
the highest quality results in strict accordance with the best practices for

specific.
